Replacing shafts in my d44 and I cannot get the fucking spindle off. Haynes manual says "carefully tap spindle loose." Ya right. After whaling on it forever and trying to pry it off no luck. Any tips or tricks?

2 ways, buy the slidehammer attachment designed for this job
or
large block of wood to protect the splines, sledgehammer to bash the spindle to the left and right til it moves anough to jam a screwdriver in the crack

when you get it off and are reassembling, coat the spindle mate surface with neversieze so the next person to pull it does have to go through that

The only thing I do different is I use a rather large rubber mallet two handed and just go apeshit on it.

I have the slide hammer style I use at work but I've heard this style also works good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Spindle-Puller-Tool-Dana-30-Dana-44-Bronco-Jeep-IH-GM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c 72Q3a1205Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp4506Q2ec0Q2em245Q QhashZitem4ce98f30e9QQitemZ330335989993QQptZMotors Q5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQQsalenotsuppo rted make sure to put some anti seize on the mounting surfaces when you put it back together.

i sometimes find that beating on the brake caliper bracket helps too, but not insanely hard

Use propane torch to heat the knuckle up a bit to get it to expand and then wack with a BFH.

Take the spindle studs out first.

I used a torch to heat my last one up on my 60. Got it nice and hot, attached the slide hammer tool to the spindle, and had a friend pull on the slide happer while I beat on it with a rubber mallet

Holy shit, took bolts off and soaked spindle crack in penetrant all night and beat the fawk out of them all day with a dead blow and a sledge with wood. Pounded flat heads into the crack between the knuck and spindle while heating with torch and got no movement at all. Guess I gotta buy a slide hammer tomorrow

I have the slide hammer adapter deal and normally just thread it on the spindle and hit it, I start with a dead blow and go to a real hammer if need be. Works pretty good most of the time, it's amazing what time and rust will do.

i dont waste time with blocks of wood or rubber mallets

thread on a spindle nut , BEAT on the spindle nut left right up down

then jam some chisels in between the spindle and knuckle once they become seperated.

I've never had to heat one up, I've always used a combo of a slide hammer and deadblow hammer and always had good luck. The right tools make ALL the difference.

Does anybody put anti-sieze on the spindle to keep it from sticking?

I put antiseize on everything, even with it shit gets stuck here with the road salt and rust. Most stuff I just plan on heating and beating on if it sees winter use.
