Did the math last night, whipped out a few quick sketches and came up with a cost of a clear Lexan hood for the FJ40.

Don't want to get banned, flamed or tarred and feathered, but here it goes.........

$245.00 USD plus shipping, FOB Naptown.

As of now....fourweek leadtime.:)

How about a windshield frame? There would probably be more demand for those. I don't really care about it being clear, just rust impervious.

Lets see a picture of your lexan hood once you get one made. The price sounds cheap considering the material and complex shape.

It's really not my style, but a couple of competitors in the rock crawling events dring AMC products have them and a few Cruiser guys want them badly....

Several pluses are iit is an unbreakable, twistable product being polycarbonate, lightweight, cool factor is high for some, plus, it is a great showpiece for those of us proud of what is under the hood.

So, I thought I'd crunch the numbers and see if the interest would warrant the expense of building the mold.:flipoff2:

One thing good about being clear is for dumb shits like me that forget to latch it down. When it flies open on the highway you can still see where you're going.

Just because it is clear, doesn't mean you can't paint it.

If freight was reasonable, I would buy one.

Just think:

No rust!:D
Paint it on the inside like a R/C car:flipoff2:
Leave clear areas for an all new 'ghost flames' effect:smokin:
And yes you could leave a clear area so you could see if your hood flipped up

The more parts, the better!

Polycarbonate is paintable.

jiMMy's bbq power engine would be visible on the trail and at the DQ!:flipoff2:

Since I may have started this idea (or maybe not) here is my thinking: I have trashed 3 hoods this year alone. Bad driver you say, hehehehehe. Well maybe but since I'm the current Erocc Champion I will ignor ALL web wheelers opinions.

But really, part of the reason is weight, for competition this is a big consideration. Durability, is next, some flexing when it make contact with hard stuff, rates high.

Cost, well I was hoping for them to be less than the estimated price, so I am counting on them lasting. Durham broke his, maybe different material, but it broke!

But finally, I am running out of sources for replacements. Shipping kills most of the good ones out west, and the words good and midwest create one hell of an oxymoron!

So, I'm in but 4 weeks is too long, I need in 2 weeks or less to look spiffy at the Supercrawl. Anybody got one within 100 miles of Indy they wanna part with?

Mike,
When are you trucking out to Farmington????

Mike -

Why not locate a good one AZ and get a rattle can of your color?

Save Freight, get a better hood!

Put a call out on the LCML, as well as the AZ and TX crew.

HTH,

Jim

BTW - topic for discussion:

I was talking to one of our local competitors (does RCAA and CalRocs). We were talking about a reverse endo he did at the last comp. I asked if it was rough, and he said that the rolls and endos aren't too bad, but rather the really big ledges (drop offs)(particlularly RCAA) are killers - one in particular taking All Pro's Jon Bundurant out with 2 burst discs - he won't comptete anymore....

I have endo'd once, and done a triple roll - Feel Lucky that I haven't been injured. How did your roll feel?

That video clip is awesome! And I did hear a wrench!

Mike,

Stay away from Texas :flipoff2:

I gotta line on one, but you think Marv would sponsor a series champion? Why sponsor anyone when you own the entire market???

i would probably be interested but i want to see the finished product before i commit. also will these hoods have the integrated high clearance fender like the jeep hoods or what?

Sounds like a great Idea. I saw Durham's clear hood and it was sweet. Would be nice to see some of the trail that a metal hood covers up.

I also agree a slight flare over the tires like the H**P hoods would look sharp, as long as they clear a 42 :D

Question is it possbile to make a Toyota Mini hood? If not, I may have to make my tube chassis toy a cruiser. The hood is about the only thing that will look stock anyway.

Clear hoods...interesting concept.
Would probably go well with aluminum fenders, a pretty engine, and a clear distributor cap (I have actually seen these...makes a 'purdy' show at night:p )

I wonder, though, how long it would take the heat to cloud the hood?

It would be a good safety thing, too.. you can see the small flames before the whole engine catches fire.. :)

I'd go for a clear hard top pan. I'd go for any hard top pan. Does anyone have one in TX that they would be willing to part with?

Just scored a hood off ebay, only 60 miles north of here. Less than $100 seemed reasonable for a straight hood with a little surface rust. Texas stash left for 'Rollin Nolan" at least for now...

New radiator should be here in the morning, and the rest of the parts are close by. Should be back together by mid next week or sooner.
