welcome steve :D
steve gerstner 09-10-2002, 09:46 AM heard of me from where?
gunracer1 09-10-2002, 09:53 AM danial has already posted both those trucks before. i would guess that you are the guy that makes the cool 6x axles?
9" axles with a high gvw and 8 lug? why run a small dif and heavy outers?
460 super cobrajet? no such thing.
my wife just walked by when that pic was onscreen, and I quote "what a horrid truck"
Who is this guy that he doesnt get roasted by Ford nuts on P4x4 ?

They would both make pretty sweet tow rigs though! I don't think they are designed for rockcrawling etc., but you probably figured that out-- didn't you?:flipoff2:

So newbie, how much does one of those behemoths weigh in at?
GRMhick 09-10-2002, 12:09 PM was about to do the roll eyes thing about the typical newbie.. but damn, the blue ford is intresting, but my mouth dropped whan i saw your daily driver. what suspension do you run on the f350? I take it the tires are what, 38" mitchlens? I love that truck (and this is comming from a total mopar nut)

samurizer99 09-10-2002, 08:14 PM kinda retarded looking, must be a bitch to steer, not a whole lotta flex, but hey, whatever pushes your butttons   :flipoff2:

Gad, Just listen to the little 'sami' boy...
Go hide, newbie. :D
masterbeavis 09-10-2002, 09:32 PM I wont be impressed till I see the 6x6 do a 6 wheel burnout! (ok, so I am a liar, I am still impressed)
Station 09-10-2002, 09:32 PM The green truck is AWESOME. Those tire look perfect on that truck.
Both trucks are pieces of mechanical art, but IMO the green truck is a little more appealing to the eye.
Some people on here are just stupid, and will bag on everything that people put on here that they own. I hope you can live with those people on here , Steve, because I am sure you can be a valuable asset to this bulletin board.
Hang with it man, there is allot of good tech information/people here.
Regards,
Sean
Rockcrawler_101 09-10-2002, 11:33 PM That thing is cool for what it is. I bet you could pull all kinds of trail rigs behind it!! I would love to take the f450 off your hands i need a tow rig for my truck and that thing is way to cool.
synds9 09-11-2002, 01:42 AM just curious what these trucks are used for?
daniel,
there is no such thing as a 460 super cobrajet.
it may be a 460 wearing CJ heads but that still isnt an SCJ
a 9" still has only a 9" ring gear no matter which case is holding them
if they were that great Ford wouldnt have paid Dana for heavy axles
no one is saying the guy cannot fab, more the subject matter is out of place on this board, same thing they say about your stuff
flmanyj 09-11-2002, 03:31 AM i liked what the green truck was towing at motorfest better

Okay, so we agree Ford never produced a 460 SCJ, but they did make a 429 SCJ. So, you're saying that by stroking it to 460, it's no longer a SCJ. What if it was just bored .060 over instead of stroked? Wouldn't be a 429 anymore, so I guess it'd be disqualified? :p

Says who? Says "pirate4x4.com" at the top of my screen. Not "Piraterockcrawling.com" :flipoff2: Besides, it's clear that the rock crawlers are borrowing tech that's "old news" in Daniel's word for their machines. Ditto the mud racing world where portal axles were all the rage 20 YEARS AGO ;)

yager 09-11-2002, 10:34 AM <soapbox>
im confused here, who the f cares what he drives. Its different, i think its cool. Granted he steped in with typical newbie attitude.. A few action shots would have been better... Obviously he doing his own thing. Not just droping down green on the latest bolt on...
Lets ask ourselves these questions....does anything this guys does affect me in anyway? Do i "really" care what engine it has?
Obviously he can build shit, so is it not possible that he might be able to build other cool stuff? After he's sufficiently pissed off at this place by a few people, he'll prolly charge anyone who mentions PBB the asshole price, just becasue he can....
errrrrr.....
</soapbox>
I'd like to see some pics of the custom parts, i dont care what it is but if i can lift an idea or 2 for some other project then im happy....
How about some pics of the 6x burnouts... or the street pulls.....
-yag
the 'SUPER' designation on a 429CJ was only available in the DRAGPAK cars IIRC
look at what a SCJ is, then come back and say that is 'close enough'
so far we have different pistons, intake, carb, crank, no info as to whether he is solid cam...
Dan was nice enough to slap yet more BS monikers on the engine now it is PI stuff too!
I am gonna call my 351C a BOSS or CJ from now on cause I got a sticker, maybe I can find someone to sell me PI pistons,
gee those are TRWs just like all the other Ford factory forged pistons
Dan,
I was not slagging you for being unique or different on this site, I very much enjoy your posts/topics
just trying to point out that a Rockcrawler site isnt the place to go trolling for street show truck 'attaboys'.
now go look under 2-5000 horsepower drag cars again and notice the 12" ring gear Chrisman rearends.
a 14ff rear is so far beyond a 9" it isnt even a contest, though they do share a ton of features.
drag cars are easier on difs and clutches then heavy offroad vehicles. go look at how far they can stretch a 10 bolt/ford 8.8 to last.
Scott,
when I joined this board it said 'Pirates of the RUBICON'.
that made it very clear to me that this is in fact a fawking Rockcrawler site. :flipoff2:
now lets hope he can post a ton of good info like Dan did and become a regular

"Pirates of the RUBICON" is a club with ~18 members. Their members administer the site. When I joined this board, there was never any attempt to keep the subject matter down to just "The Rubicon", so I think it's fair to say that if the board has expanded beyond "the Rubicon", it can expand beyond rocks as well - which it has :p

Dirty Harry 09-11-2002, 12:36 PM Daniel I like the trucks and I always like to see new (to me) technology, but you couldn't argue your way out of a wet paper sack!
AND the truck competes in street drags regularly where they blow the wimpy 14's and 60's all the time! Note steves is still running.... never broke.
What makes the 14 bolt "wimpy"? The bigger ring gear, the bigger pinion, the bigger shafts, the bigger axle tubes? I do have to commend you (or Steve actually) for the amount of money spent on a 9" though.
as far as a place to go ... you havent read this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79843) thread have you about a rockcrawling 6X6
What does this prove, that you ruined a TJ? When it is DONE I will be interested to see if it is any more capable than (or even as capable as) a similarly setup 4x4.
the europeans have known the advantages of 6X6 off road for decades ... so has our own military.... Ill stick with that.
I agree with you... for towing capacity. Since that is what these trucks are used for I bet they work great. For "advantages off-road" though I am not convinced. The Europeans drive Ladas off-road too. :flipoff2:
I would like to see some pictures of the front axle in the green truck though.
WillyPete 09-11-2002, 04:15 PM jeez, can't you people just appreciate something as a feat of engineering?
steve, i don't know you from adam, but those trucks are fawkin COOL! :smokin:
if everybody just stuck with "what works," 4 wheeling as a sport would suck. we wouldn't have trail buggys, mud bogs, rock crawlers, etc. hell, we wouldn't even have 4wd if it weren't for people who thought "hey, what can i do with this axle...?"
so c'mon, the guy knows his shit and does some great fabwork. i understand doggin on him just a matter of course, but actin like a dick just cuz his truck isn't the "norm" is retarded
SCOTTS_4X 09-11-2002, 04:32 PM they blow the wimpy 14's and 60's all the time!
yeah and top fuelers use 9"s HA!:flipoff2:
I'd like to see a 9 inch diameter ring gear hold 5000+ hp.........not gonna fly!:flipoff2:
steve gerstner 09-11-2002, 05:51 PM These two truck's are my company vehicles, both are tagged and insured for 25,999 G.V.W. These truck's run from central florida to michigan, new york and canada for dana 60 front's and 2 1/2 rockwell's two and three times a year, they are max. every trip. For those who like to throw ''rocks'' let's see what you ''got''!!!!
ItsaCJ6 09-11-2002, 07:18 PM Steve. Sorry you have fallen into the newbie stereotype, being a newbie and all.
Lets see some shots of the axles, I would like to see some closer pics.
Oh and I bash newbies for being newbies. Nothing personal. We/I tend to fire at will, at least most folks that post much do . I have been to lots of BBS's and this one is by far the most hostile. I like it though. keeps ya sharp. It gives me the occasion to match opinions or not match opinions with folks. Hell even Bigdude convinced me to go 14 bolt. It must be like they say "once you've had black you never go back" cause I wouldn't trade my 14 bolt for much of anything.
oh and ( I have to....) Welcome Newbie:flipoff2:
elf_cruiser 09-11-2002, 08:28 PM OK, i have to ask a question:
Why make both rear axles through-pinion??
Why not just the first one? Seems like it would be easier that way...
elf_cruiser 09-11-2002, 10:33 PM ahhh, so he basically did it for practice, then. cool...
Wow...what a set of posts, I see not much has changed since I last looked at POR:flipoff2:
The blue trucks ok...cool for what it does
The silver and green truck is awsome!
I've seen it in person, and it does get used. I got my 1 ton axles for my CJ7 from Steve delivered in person when he was making a run up the east cost to pick stuff up. The 5th wheel tilt back trailer they were on was a pretty awsome piece of eng itself...
Hey Steve remember that brown CJ7 in Alfred Station, NY where you droped off the pair of 60s? The 60s are finally under it now, don't have any good after shots...

it is a discussion board I believe, not an appreciation board.
I am pretty sure everyone here( 'ceptin maybe the chit chat section) appreciates the engineering feats.
bigdude 09-12-2002, 05:06 AM I think the green truck would smoosh most people trail rigs who are talking shiat

Thanks for the pics Steve, those are cool. With the rear suspension like this do you find that tongue weight it crucial? I am just picturing towing with a rig too far forward or back on the trailer and one axle getting loaded up way more than the other. Has this proven to be an issue for you at all?
Did someone make mention of an 8x8?
Harry,
that is a walking beam.
it will distribute the load evenly until the axle pivot bottoms
sprueitt 09-12-2002, 03:02 PM 6x6......

I must put in my two cents here about 6x6. Now before I start, I am in no way bashing 4x4, but I worked on several projects here at the Los Alamos National Laboratories ( many of them Classified) and this one project in particular had to do with heat sources for an offroad vehicle that was to go where no vehicle has ever gone before ( no Roads..,.No humans....)
When I looked into the extensive research on the project these scientist and engineers had been researching which platform was better for going in rocky terrain where there where no roads, and no way to rescue your vehicle if it became stuck or high centered. To avoid becoming high centered, or to maximize traction, floatation, and stability they realized that 6x6 was a beter application than 4x4. Thus, The Mars rover was 6x6 instead of 4x4. They could not aford to have a mulit million dollar vehicle get stuck a couple AU's away from Earth. 6x6 is not just for towing, but to better enhance your offroad stability, traction, and function. Once again I an not knocking 4x4. I own a few 4x4's and a few 6x6's and I like them both.

F-Superdutys only came 2WD so it may have the stock springs but it can't be the stock front axle.
Oh yeah, I like the blue one but I'm not too sure about the green one.
steve gerstner 09-13-2002, 07:43 AM Hey paul, this '71 429 scj is complete with 460 crank and pistons and 2x4 holley's, last trip 2,800 miles cost $ 689.00 in premium. The marmon harrington i picked up new in the crate with the springs, three leaf ea.

Sorry Paul, gotta disagree here.
Any Ford dealer can (could??) get you a 4x4 F-superduty. Conversion contracts with several companies.
An 4x4 F supeduty never left the factory, but you could pick one up at any Ford dealership.
I guess it depends on your definition of "stock"
