I'm looking for ideas/pictures on rocker guards for my 46 CJ2a. I already have some 4" X 4" angle iron (1/4" thick) that I'm thinking about using. The problems that I can't figure out is how to make the bend to follow the body lines and what to do about the little step.

For the bend, I was thinking about making a pie cut in the bottom of the angle iron and heating and bending it. If there's a gap left in the pie cut, I would weld a piece of metal in it to fill it. Just wondering if there's a better way to do this.

For the step, I was thinking about cutting the top part of the angle iron to slide it around the step. This would leave the step vulnerable but not too worried about that because I don't do too much hard core offroading for it to be of any concern.

Any ideas or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Back in the day I had a YJ which i made rocker guards for it using 8" strap 3/16 thick. I had a fab shop bend them on a press break and bent them 2" and 6" long ways for 20 bucks. I powder coated and bolted them up to my Jeep. They looked really clean and fit better than the angle iron. In hindsight I should have welded a triangle piece underneath to tie into the body mounts like the Currie ones, because they ended up pulling away from the body a little bit enough to get small rocks in it.

So fast forward 10 years and now I have a 51 CJ3a. I'll probably build 1 1/2" tube sliders since I have a tube bender at my disposal but you could take that same idea but cut the angle into them and weld the two pieces back together. Then weld a triangular piece into the bottom to tie into a body mount. Of course you could go a step further and cut open a piece of tube to weld into the corner to give it a fancier look. Actually with the angle on the rocker guard it wont twist away from the side of the body as easily as a straight one.

As far as the step goes; mine never had one on it when I got it but I'd toss it anyways. You could always adapt the step to attach to the rocker guard instead to avoid slotting the rocker guard.

I used 2x4" box tube under the rockers and then some diamond plate just on the side of the tub.

Thanks guys for the info and pics. I do want to put some tubing on the angle iron after I get it bent so that I have a step on it.

Does anyone else have any pictures? It would be great to see some other examples of rocker guards for the CJ2A's for some ideas. It's easy to find them on the CJ 5's and newer but not for the 2a's.

Probabally a little more involved than you want to get, but I replaced all the tin with real metal on the stretched cj2a I used to have.

Thanks old jeep. That looks great. If I had the time, space and skills, that would be a great project. Eventually when I retire from the Marine Corps and move back to MO, I want to do some serious work to mine. Still have at least 6 years until that happens.
