Well figuired id start a build thread of my new tj so i have some sort of catalog of events and to ask for help as it progresses. It starts out as a 06 tj (ive made 2 payments and thats about a record for me to leave something alone) Got a 14 bolt for the rear and am still scouring for a front 60. Had a rubicon express long arm on it for awhile and am going to base the new susp from that. Got my new tires on fri. The new goodyear mtr's, daum 40's look kewl

Some of the 14 bolt...or should i say 13 bolt? Shaved an inch off, welded the tubes and plated the bottom to make it a lil smoother. nothing too special.

It was pretty flexy with the rubi kit but i dont have to tell any one here about the shortcomings of the dana 35, even with alloys:shaking:. Thats me fixing a axle on jack north.

So.. one of the reasons i chose a 14 bolt was the supposed incredible amount of aftermarket support, i mean the thought of not being able to get gears never even entered my mind. Come to find out none of the 5 major players in the gear industry i called could help me out cuz 5:38's are backordered out the yazoo. needless to say i was pretty bummed. I found out about east coast gear supply and man they hooked it up. Thanx alot guys. Gears should be here by mid next week and that is all im waiting for to put the axles in. sooo close......

Well the plan was to put tire infront and behind it but due to lack of time im just gonna put it back together without stretching it just yet. the wb will be around 94-95" for now but trust me it wont be that way for long. My plan is to do the rear first one week than the front another week. In the end i want to be around 105" or more. I am still trying to figure out how i want to do the rear. I am going to use this as a dd and want it to be as ergonomic as possible. I want to be able to fuel it up from the outside and dont want to hear fuel pumps and fuel sloshing around, nor do i want to smell gas. I am going to build my own cell but halfway french it in the floor than sheetmetal over it. Ive seen some ideas simalar to what i want to do and it looks pretty clean with all the extra effort. That way i can still have my cell relativley under the jeep and put my ice chest behind the rear seat still. The front is still up in the air with what i want to do for the steering, i dont want full hydro but i want an extreme stretch. I will most likley have my friend that owns a steering remanufacturing company build or find me a box with the pitman output farther to the front. Ive heard the trick is an astrovan box but i havent researched it that far yet. Eventually i plan to highline the front fenders about 3" than minitub the rear so i can raise them up as well. I want the center of gravity to be as low as possible. I was kinda bummed how low the rubicon express skidplate sits (like 3 inches below the frame) but oh well.

Your welds look great, I think anyway. What kind of welder are you using? Thanks.

gg's cj5
07-05-2009, 07:31 PM
Thank you. i have a few different welders for different jobs. I use a lincoln powermig 255 for steel, and i use my miller syncrowave 200 for stainless, chromo and aluminum. I also have a miller 140 for small jobs and a bobcat with a suitcase welder for the really big stuff. I actually used 3 different welders on my axles. I used the powermig 255 for all of the brackets that are on the tubes than the syncrowave with nirod for the cast sections. on the front axle i used the syncrowave again and tigged on the big spiderweb gusset. and on the tubes to the center sections i used my 140 with innershield. (if you get the cast hot enough with a torch first the innershield bites really well)

Well I think they look great. Which one did you use to weld the truss/CA brackets together?

Well i have been a buisy man this weekend, finally had time to work on my stuff. heres the brakes. i used 82 1/2 ton 2wd chevy front rotors and 02 f350 calipers. cut some 1/2" for the caliper mounts.

Axles are in and it runs. I have less driveline vibration than before and the tires are super quiet. No matter how you try to overcome tire size with gearing you still feal a little power loss though. Now im acumulating parts for stage 2, the stretch. Im gonna do the front first than the rear another weekend. Not bad for getting the axles done in less than a month. it would have been less if i had the axles when i started but i started dismanteling before i even had sorced out the axles, than i had to deal with gearing avalibility drama.

you know your tires are on backwards right, or just the passenger side? they are directional tires....

gg's cj5

The coils are 4" lift, i made a 3" spacer for thr front but the coils will be replaced by air shocks or coilovers soon. Actually the tires arent directional i dont know why they arent. If you want the all terrain tread in the middle than one side of the tread will be facing the other direction but because all are the same if you want the tread to be facing the same than the all terrain tread would be offset to one side. im not sure why they did it like that. either way you mount them they look odd, i rather have the all terrain part twards the inside than have it off center not like it really matters anyway they are so freaking huge.

Well thats what i thought but my buddy is a gm for goodyear for 12 years and he says that is just how they are. Sounds like bs to me but ive talked to a few other people that have the new mtr's and thats how they all seem to be. They arent a directional in the normal way i thought as in the tread points a certain way. They do however say this side outward (not left or right) and thats how i mounted them. in any case maybe i can use this to my advantage and blame it on goodyear for giving me 2 wrong tires when i get stuck. whadu think.

Wow, nice build!
I don't play in the desert anymore since relocating to CO but for the past year I have been down here in Brawley(temp) and that has made me miss the higher speed stuff.
Last chase/prerun rig was a 94' Ford Lighting. I would post pics but don't have any in the comp... I will check Camburg's site and see if they still have any pics of it.

You guys have some serious toys.:grinpimp:

*Edit* here it is: http://www.camburg.com/xvehiLightning.html
not sure why Jerry has it listed as a 95'... oh well that was almost ten years ago.
