So here's the deal. 89 jeep wrangler with the 2.5 TBI.
The timing chain broke on me the other day and now everything is all out of wack. I do have experiance with replacing timing chains but never had to start from scratch.
I am despritly asking for help with getting everything in the corect position. When I try to line up the cam shaft sprocket and the crank shaft sprocket dots then my dizzy is about 180 out. I tried to restab the dizzy and start it with no luck.
I heard somewhere that you need to watch the valves to get the cam in the correct position but I am not sure on this. And yes I have #1 cylinder at TDC on compression. So all in all I just need some assistance on getting the cam in the correct position. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I used the "Haynes" maual when I did mine.

Basicaly I will try and add what it says..hard without the included illustrations.

Timing chain and sprokets get installed when piston one is at TDC. The marks(dots) on the sprokets should lign up or face each other with the Cam one being at aprox 4-5 oclock. The crank one being aprox 10 to 11 oclock. But they will be facing one another.

To verify that everything is installed correctly:
1. Turn the crankshaft to place the camshaft sproket timing mark at aprox 1 oclock. This positions the crankshaft sprocket timing mark where the adjacent tooth meshes with the chain at the 3 oclock position.Count the number of chain pins between the timing marks and it should be 20.
2. With that being done, from what I recall, you need to put the timing chain cover back on (timming marks on it). And then put the harmonic dampener back on. Do not need to fully seat or pound it on, just enough to verify the timing mark so you can turn the crank so it lignes up with the timing chain cover at the 0 mark.
3. Then remove the distributor cover if not already. The rotor should be pointing at the number one spark plug. If it is not then you have to just start over (which wont take long, but just rotate the camshaft only a full revolution before reinstalling the timming chain and sprockets. Now when you recheck, the external timing marks on harmonic dampener and cover should be at 0 and the rotor should be pointing at number one cylinder. If so then seal it all up and finish off.

Hope this explains it, if not and you do not have the manula, you may want to get one as the pics in it and the explanation is very helpfull. They are only like 10 or 15 bucks at most auto parts places.

Hope this helps
