I have been blessed with one of the wonderful SR-4s. It has reached the point where it does not want to shift into 2nd, so the time has come to replace. While I do have a spare SR-4 I would rather not put it in to just change it out in a few months...

Now, onto the T176. What would be involved in this change?

It will be going into an 81 '8 with a 151 and D300.

TIA

I would personally stay away from the T-176, not that strong, and lame first gear (3.52 I think). I don't know if there is a stock Bellhousing that goes from t-176 to the iron puke (GM 151), if not, then it is definately more pain in the ass than it is worth. a better option MIGHT be:
**SM-465. Since your 151 is SBC bellhousing, it will be bolt-in in that respect. If you have hydro clutch ( i think you might) then that will also be simple enough. If not, swap pedal sets with a hydro-clutch CJ. extremely easy. The 465 can be had for dirt money, with a 205 transfer. The only custom work required would be making a tranny-transfer mount, and driveshafts. rear driveshaft may be kinda short, but being an '8, it should be fine. you also MIGHT neeed tunnel and firewall mods, not sure.

ADVANTAGES
- The combo would give you 45:1 with 3.54 gears, way better than the 34:1 the 176/300 combo would give you.
-Indestructable components.
-CHEAP
-SBC swap is now as easy as motor mounts, wireing, and you're done. its the jeep way, plan for your next swap ahead!
-readily available CV driveshaft stuff to accomodate SOA
-Bigger clutch
DISADVANTAGES
-heavy weight
- some 465's have a third gear that attacks you if you don't hold it in gear. no big deal, jus letting you know
- short rear driveshaft

I say GO for it , GET your krawl on, but thats jus me.

Thanks FCWheeler, but this is what I have available right now.

Come on guys, I know someone here has something useful to say :flipoff2: .

Other than the input shaft difference (SR-4 has 1" 14 spline and T176 has 1 1/8" 10 spline), what else is there to consider?

I am sure I'm not the only one to ever consider this....

i think the sr4 has the same bolt pattern as the t5, and on the t5 bh's for the AMC's you just need to drill out a couple new holes and tap them.

only other things to consider would be to make sure the index hole for the bearing retainer is the same. I'm pretty sure it is. Might have to get a custom pilot bushing, and swap clutch discs for a t176 version. Is the clutch you have now a 10.5" if it is the 176 should work just fine.
