I have finally got the tail section of the transmission apart, the manual shows you have to use a special cage in a press to take apart the clutches in the overdrive. I found info on how to remove the pump without spending $100 on slide hammers (carriage bolts and large sockets) and was just wondering if anyone has another way of doing this without spending $100+ on a cage that I will use once?
thanks

Make the tool. You're going to need a press to do it too. There's no way around that.

I unfortuntly do not have the tools to make the tool needed but I do have access to a press.

IMHO if you cant figure out how to make a simple attachment for your press using simple hand tools, you should not be tearing the transmission apart in the first place.
That said, I made a simple attachment for the press, using some 1' x 1/4" steel flat stock I had laying around. You need to compress the clutch packs, and still have enough room to remove the snap ring that holds it together. It is basicaly in the shape of an upside down "U" I added a couple of gussets, as there is a good amount of spring pressure that you are compressing.
If you try this, BE CAREFUL!! There is a LOT of stored energy in that spring, and it could easily take off a finger if it comes apart.

Use a piece of heavy wall pipe with a "window" cut out. Weld a small plate to the top. Simple and easy.
I build Diesel trannys daily. Be very careful with that OD spring! 800 lbs of energy are in there waiting to get out!
