Hello, Anyone I need help in a bad way here.

My wife had a heart attack recently so I can't afford to take it to the shop at the moment and I have to get it running soon. I've put in a new fuel pump and a ignition harness in the column and a new battery.

Anyway I have a 98 Z71 with a Vortec 350 that turns over but doesn't fire. I have had this problem in the past and a new battery got her running for the last 3 weeks and as of this morning its doing it to me again.

When I turn the key on I can't hear the fuel pump kicking on, it'll turn over all day long. I kinda think I may have a short somewhere but I don't have a clue where to start looking. Also It seems the timing is a little off when it does run. I don't know if there's much else I can add. Please help if you can it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Sounds fuel related, did you change the fuel filter when you did the pump? Hook a fuel pressure gauge to the supply line should be a test port next to the inlet of the CPI. Mst auto parts stores have these for rent.

And to set the timing you set the base @ 0 then need a tuner to adjust it.

Ignition module or fuel pump. Don't forget to check the fuel pump relay before replacing the pump. If the module is bad on these I think it may keep the pump from working but I might be wrong...

These pumps are notorious for going bad. I recommend AC Delco pump, although I replaced mine with NAPA and it has been working great for 2 or 3 years

had one do the same thing...came to be the fuel pump relay fuse. the contacts in the fuse block got spread open somehow and pump would imtermittinly work. acted just like fuel pump was dead.

Sorry to hear about your wife.

When you replaced the pump, did you make sure all grounds and connections were good?

When cranking it can you spray ether and get it to run?

Like mentioned above, swap the fuel pump relay with another one and see if it works.

I think everyone has you on the right track so I just want to add this. If your pump is bad go get your money back under warranty if possible and buy a genuine GM pump. They typically are not that much more money, but they are far superior to the parts store replacements in my experience. It doesn't matter if it's Airtex, Carter, Borg Warner, et al...they just don't seem to hold up like the GM pumps do. Most of the GM pumps even have different connectors requiring you to cut the end off your harness and solder in a new piece just to assure that you have good connections.
