AllGoNoShow 04-11-2011, 11:54 AM What is the reason that you cant have your winch feet down?
As for you welding...it looks like you are "dragging" the weld instead of "pushing" it.
spidr 04-11-2011, 12:21 PM 10k,12k and 15k all come with instructions to mount them feet forward. I was told it's because the casting won't hold up on a hard pull, feet forward it trys to compress them instead of pulling it apart. It's a better way to mount all winches.

Makes sense...I have my 12K milemarker mounted feet down. I built a bumper out of 1/4'' plate and it tweeked it pretty good on a hard side pull. I then built the plate out of 1/2'' and have put some really hard pulls on it. I hope it keeps holding together :(.

never heard this b4. it does make sense, although 90 percent of the winches I have seen are feet down, including my mm12k. I have stalled mine trying to pull a huge spruce tree, not broken feet..... yet. and yes you better gusset that even if you bolted it on the bottom imo.
HEAVY METAL 04-11-2011, 11:51 PM I've been neglecting the chevy section.....Or else I would have told you sooner.
All the force from the winch is being transfered through that single weld(or bend, I can't tell) at the bottom of the plate. Even if the weld holds, which it may not, it will pull the plate out, basically opening your bumper like a tin can. None of the load is being transfered to the plate bolted to the bumper since there is no brace. It would suck to say I told you so here;)
whaaaaat no love for the chevy anymore ? the plate is bent. itook your advice and appreciate any and all advice i get...thank you.

73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 08:02 AM You're gonna need to gusset the front plate for the winch back, or it will rip it off the first good pull.
Well the winch itself is acting as a gusset.
I had a receiver with a 12,000 warn which I pulled the crap outta and it never bent at all.
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af274/79fordwheeler/reciever.jpg
73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 08:07 AM Same with the rear no issues with a 10,000 warn. Thus one doesn't even have the top tabs and is a 1/4 bottom plate vs my 3/8 bottom plate on the old receiver 12,000 warn.
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af274/79fordwheeler/006.jpg

I wouldn't recommend doing it like that. I bent 1/4'' plate with a 12K, I had all 4 feet bolted on at the time also. It was a really hard pull involving a snatch block, locked up front axle (tires would not turn) due to the broken pinion wedged against the case, and a 2ft vertical ledge all while going uphill:laughing:, so yeah it was a pretty hard pull.
spidr 04-13-2011, 09:15 AM It may work for you, but I can show you a bunch of broken winches, in various sizes, and personally am not willing to risk it. Mounting it poorly with 4 bolts is a bad idea, and if it goes wrong it usually takes the winch out, since the cast aluminum makes a bad "gusset". Mounting it with 2 bolts is half assed.
Maybe Heavy Metal will wheel the truck harder than you and have to worry about it. But either way, your winches are a good example of how NOT to do it.
73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 09:46 AM K for starters Ryan my receiver was using 6 bolts, every available one on the winch and the plate was 3/8 as well and was used many times with no issues. You cant call me out for how not to do things on that one!
The rear " maybe" could of been made from 5/16 or overkill 3/8 plate bottom and back but arn't factory warn winch plates all 1/4"?
The tabs on the back winch are 3/8 and the tabs connecting to frame crossmember are way overkill 1/2 plate as it's what I had laying around with 1/2 grade 8 bolts, 4 per mounting tab. Also there's no 2 bolt connections on it there are 4 on the back to the winch plate so I don't know who you were referring to on that one..
spidr 04-13-2011, 10:01 AM I get what you're saying but it doesn't matter how many bolts you have holding the plate or reciever to the frame, You only have 2 bolts holding your winch to the plate. Unless of course there are some hidden bolts threaded into the winch in a place other than the feet which don't show in the pic?
And the comparison to a warn winch plate isn't fair, you and I both know that formed is stronger than welded all day long.
Ah......You have the bolts in the back...........Just got that.
The pic makes it look like you have 2 bolts up front and thats it....And your description sucks:flipoff2:
Either way. It's still not the *right* way to do it.
73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 10:03 AM I'm open to any other suggestions but so far it's just worked. I pull a 6000lb rig on 44's so it's been put through alot..
Anyways I scrapped the reciever and built myself a custom 3/16 bumper that I powder coated as it gives a much better approach angle as it's higher and more recessed back by quite a bit
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af274/79fordwheeler/done2.jpg
If you don't know by now I ran this grey truck in tough trucks 2 years ago..

I had it out before that pic. There are 2 bolts that go up through the bottom

73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 05:22 PM ok i took another pic with the bolts installed. Cant see the top 2 tabs bolting to the top but it clearly shows the front ones on the tabs and the mounting plates to crossmember
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af274/79fordwheeler/005-1.jpg
Ok back to this build thread just thought I'd show you how I did it with no issues..
73 ford guy 04-13-2011, 05:37 PM am i doing anything wrong with my welding?
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/009-35.jpg
O I also have a tip for you on the welding. You may want to slow down your wire speed a tad for more control but without going to cold on the volts. Also the key to making it look pretty and give it strength is to have the proper joint prep. I like to use an open corner joint for a full pen and also stitch weld the inside ( 2 inch welds every foot or so). If you do a butt joint like the bottom pic you have to run a grinder wheel down the entire joint to make a slight groove (chanel) to get better penetration but also make it look much nicer as it doesnt look bulky
http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af274/79fordwheeler/joint.jpg
Heres an example of my rear winch bumper I did with a open corner joint which makes it really easy to weld as i do a 45 degree bottom left to top right weave of the puddle from left to right direction of welding. light holes were setup the same. You just have to cut you material shorter(material thickness) in plans to push steel out on edge for the open corner joint if your picking up what I'm laying down

73 ford guy 04-15-2011, 12:13 PM Looking good. Question your 12voltguy winch switch is it the spring loaded back to center toggle? I have 2 of the same ones on my dash but opted for the toggle type switch that stays in position when engaged so it's entirely hands free. When I asked them for them they even sent them for free and just mentioned to be carefull not to leave them engaged.
Also I picked up some cool wireless remotes for mine on eBay cheap too that even have different frequencies to run both the front and back. I keep em on my visor clipped on and labeled front/rear.

BRORSAM 05-31-2011, 09:16 PM Finally made my way through reading the whole build----great work!
I'm digging the P40 theme, but can't help thinking how much you might have enjoyed seeing Soni Honegger's "War Wagon" Dodge Ramcharger up close. I was fortunate enough to have that beast at my shop for a few months a couple years back. What Soni did with the military theme was astounding---right down to the 1/2" thick steel plate dashboard (not an exaggeration).
That build parallels yours in many respects...originally a Ramcharger, but evolved into a pickup cab on the Ramcharger chassis, with a custom bed, big block, 1 ton running gear...etc.
Here's to hoping that you manage to keep the overall weight reasonable (not 8500 pounds like the War Wagon).

Didn't the old Allison V12's in the P40 have two exhaust valves / two exhaust headpipes per cylinder? Pretty sure you're not running a V-6. Of course, half of an Allison under the hood would be one BMF......
HEAVY METAL 06-06-2011, 08:40 PM hmm.. i went with 6 pipes per side . i thought thats what i counted on the P40...your makin me go check lol.
HEAVY METAL 06-06-2011, 08:43 PM yup..i was correct, 6 pipes per side. :)

My bad....I see how I got confused.
Allison engine:
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii326/startheblackcat/K20%20build/p40-engine-cu.jpg
Apparently I've gotten myself brainwashed over the years having seen these engines in tractor pulling applications with custom headers with one tube per exhaust port rather than the 2-into-1 "manifolds" from the P40 application.
Carry on.....!
AllGoNoShow 06-07-2011, 06:22 AM Haha...The other kids will be jealous of that bike, nice work. Oh and the truck looks good too!
Edit. I'm sure you could get some side pipes on the bike too!

love the daily...
I only have one suggestion, that would be some bracing on the cage. You seem like a real nice guy and your kid is cute as could be. I'd hate to see anything happen to either one of you if you flopped her over. That's A LOT of rig for ANY cage to hold up, give yourself the best bracing possible.

thanks Dook, but thats my room mates car. my Daily is a F150. ya know its funny you mention this as i was looking at the cage last nite. i am thinking of adding a brace from a pillar to b pillar and diaganol ( sp?) across the back...that should help no? thanks for the compliments and any advice given is greatly appreciated. cheers! :)

I'd probably do a large X across the back. a "door bar" would a to b would work wonders. I'd probably throw some small gussets on the roof bars.

HEAVY METAL 08-12-2011, 06:10 AM next up i volunteered for the firefighter burn camp. It's a camp that treats burnt kids to a week of camping and various activities. It all run voluntarily by firefighters. This day was the most rewarding day of my life. It humbled me to see so many ( 60 ) burnt kids in so much pain but still having fun. The part that got me upset was one firefighter told me that 80 percent of the kids here are burnt by their parents :mad3::mad3::mad3::mad3: like WTF?
I seen one child that a firefighter explained to me the only place he wasnt burnt was his diaper area and his wrsits and ankles where the rope was. tied to the bed ny his parents and lit on fire. Infuriates me. :mad3:
Well they loved the P40 and had great day of trail rides. I will never walk by the empty boot stand ever again.
I couldnt take pics as some kids have clauses about publicity. i'll post some pics when i get them from the photographer that was there

this is not a money build, we are a single income family so I do anything and everything within my means to keep the airplane flyin. making a long travel, high angle front shaft is one of those things I had to make as i cant afford to buy one. so here's my newest version of my john deere front driveshaft...
cutting broken end off..

BRORSAM 09-02-2011, 04:26 PM Why change to a shaft without a CV? Too fragile during 5000 rpm clutch dumps? Not worried about extra noise / vibration running without it?
Sounds like you need to save up some broken Dana 60 30 spline stubs---then you can build a 1480 sized non-CV shaft with 40 degree angle capacity.
I'm going the 1480 non-CV route on my build (just because it's quick and cheap), but in the back of my mind I'm expecting vibration might eventually be an issue.
I'm really liking the PTO shaft as a driveline slip joint. Just yesterday I was messing around with one of those---they're a much tighter fit than I'd expected. Seems like a lot better solution than the square tube approach.
73 ford guy 09-02-2011, 05:01 PM Where's this tough trucks you speak of?
There's one here near Victoria B.c , Sept 17,18..
rokcrawlr1 09-02-2011, 06:54 PM Use caution installing that new yoke. There is a crush sleeve on that pinion and you don't want it any tighter than it was already. You probably already know that but I don't want to see have problems later if you don't.

HEAVY METAL 11-13-2011, 12:26 PM stupid question of the day...
Are there any ill effects to running a drive flange ones side and locking hubs on other of open D60?
My geuss as to what happened is the c clip must have broke causing the flange to knock out the cap and eject itself while drving down an FSR. These are 30 spline OEM drive flanges. i have a good locking hub that I would like to install but want to know if there are any ill effects? I dont think so but thought I'd ask.
subranger 11-13-2011, 01:21 PM as pre requested some pics of how I did my hood...nothin fancy lol, simple yet effective :)

This question...lol
I can't see there being any problems. If it's locked it's locked
subranger 11-14-2011, 02:33 PM are you locked up front? the only thing that i can think of is if you are and you try driving with the one hub unlocked would make for weird stering. with the hub locked in should be fine.

why not just use drive flanges all over? the rigs is trailered with no locker, go nuts.
I'm surprised a front locker and shafts have not made there way into your axle yet, must drive like a girl :D

HEAVY METAL 11-21-2011, 09:47 PM no sir. single joint up top. im just doing this to get out and beat the shit out of the bitch for a day.Im still doing the D60 stubs welded to a new flange but my buddy who has the tools for that has been busy.

Enough said, proceed to beat, then post pics:D
73 ford guy 11-22-2011, 10:10 AM I'm curious if that will last longer than 2500 rpm.
It's relying on that 3/8 strip on the end. Maybe if you stacked/welded another 3/8 across that narrow section it might last a wee bit longer. Report back with carnage.

Ha, I'd say if it held in that it'll be good to play around with until you finish your other one.
On a sidenote, fuuuuuck I wish I lived in BC it looks like summer out there still. Don't get me wrong we're having a super mild winter too, but it's still about -5/-10 all the time and about an inch of snow. Today was 0 and it fuckin' rained.
D-LUX 01-19-2012, 06:17 PM great truck man looks awesome.
got a question though, what were the specs on that BBC? cam, compression, etc.

81critter 04-01-2012, 10:56 PM Hey greeting man, I really like how the truck turned out for you. It just has that attitude...
Between chevyphil and your build It's given me some ideas and filled the gap.
And in a few ways I felt your pain, going through front driveshafts...
Also running a 465 10 spline and 205 behind it. I have more lift than you maby,.
Have you tried off-set 1350 u-joints is that I see at the pinion, Or your grief may be at the t case?.
