HEAVY METAL 06-29-2009, 01:09 PM that looks sweet man! did you paint the headers yourself?
yes sir...:D
dfl701 06-29-2009, 01:36 PM i figured so, so what did you use to paint them? it seems like most paint ends up falling off the headers because of heat.
they make special high temp paint just for headers. Auto Zone carries it, Advance, even Wal-Mart I'm sure..
dfl701 06-29-2009, 02:03 PM i just havent heard very many things that work, looks good though. i like the engine color, you really paid attention to all the details
HEAVY METAL 06-29-2009, 03:51 PM i just havent heard very many things that work, looks good though. i like the engine color, you really paid attention to all the details
they make header paint.. or bbq paint.. the trick is too cure it.. paint it.. then get ur headers HOT!
thanks bro.. yeah aircraft grey... wanted too resemble the plane as best i could.
Kali-K10 06-29-2009, 04:42 PM when i first opened the this thread and started reading I though...NO FUCKIN WAY! WHAT KIND OF DIPSHIT CUTS UP A MINT FULL CONVERTABLE BLAZER?!?!
then I realized you smashed the fuck out of it and then cut it up. which is almost acceptable. :flipoff2:
but then you made a blazer/truck and I though, well that makes sense if your gonna wheel.
BUT,
THEN YOU CUT THE ROOF OF THE FREAKIN TRUCK CAB!? :mad3:
So my only real question is, and its kind of long; what's the point in removing a 1 piece body with no top, and adding a truck cab, and then cutting the top off the truck cab and converting a blazer that was originally a 4 seater into a 2 seater that you can no longer move into the back of?
Everything else on this build is cool, and I saw your truck on youtube with no headers haha that was baddass. Not trying to hate on it, you're just throwing me off by ruining the blazer body to make a "family rig" with less room.
I guess im kind of a purist when it comes to full con's between 73-75.

I never had the chance to take a close look at your trazer/whatever it is now, but, DAMNIT!!!! I thought I was being original but I built the EXACT same sliders, even down to the damn smiley face!!!!!(time to get out the grinder and make it a mad face! only thing different is I put fat man step bars (for me and the wife was preggers) on them and ran them full length to t in an exo (eventually).
I like it though, eventually I'm wanting to do alot of the same things just spent my $$ in different areas so far!:mr-t: badass foo

i ruined the first body so had too do soemthing, a very good friend offered me his old cab and clip . once you wheel full convert you cant go back too cab. there is a bench seat so the three of us fit fine. the cage is very well tieed into the cab...i can open and close both doors when im flexed...try doin that with a cab..:flipoff2:. the seperate box is great for keeping our dogs and camping gear seperate from us. did i answer all of em???:D

Cool thread
Take off-eh! Ya hoser!
Try mounting those flip brackets an inch forward, especially if you're not gonna have any weight in the back. I did it in the burb and it made an awesome rear shackle angle, had to downgrade to some belltech 6" shackles for now (but for 20 bucks they'll work untill I build some good ones) Makes the ass ride like a cadilac versus tank. Straight up and down shackles suck no matter what vehicle they're in!
Oh and your rig still kicks ass!
spidr 07-10-2009, 11:29 PM You should fix that broken leaf eh. :flipoff2:

i had a decal place make them for me. thye added some shadowing too give the " rivets" some dimension. and yes the black ,line is pinstripe.
DARROW75 02-15-2010, 11:22 AM Cool build mang! I've had 2 '75 K5s and I love the full convertibles! I just picked up a '83 K5 rolling chassis with an engine. I'm gonna put a '94 pickup cab on it and slice out everything behind the doors and the top. Then shorten up the bed and weld it on to whats left to build a '90s body style full conv Blazer, or I guess it'll be a Tahoe then. Lol! I'll post up a build thread soon! It looks like you guys have some beautiful wheeling spots up there in B.C. Lucky!

actually, too keep with the aircraft motif, i would almost think smaller, round lens would look cool. you could still do the \ / in the tailgate. maybe 2 reds, and an amber, just a thought.

HEAVY METAL 05-15-2010, 10:12 AM what tie rods are you useing? i am uusing the ones NWF sells. speaking of NWF...Kyle called me back last nite( friday at 5ish ) and talked too me till after 6 trying too figure out my issues. we believe i have the wrong pitman arm in the right box. Kyle's tie rod ends go too far into the pitman arm and a drag link end doesnt fit??? i measured from center line too centre line on the pitman arm and got 2"..doesnt strike me as a 4" drop bronco arm.? am i right thinking this?

spidr 06-07-2010, 02:47 PM Weld a nut on, back it out, and hog the hole out for the next bigger size. I think the last one I did I put a 5/8" stud there.
Don't use bolts either. Thread in Gr8 ready rod, and use a nut up top.

thank you...on it! :)
HEAVY METAL 06-08-2010, 10:44 PM well i welded on 12 nuts and broke off 12 nuts....damn it!
HEAVY METAL 06-09-2010, 11:13 AM this is what i started with..
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/007-8.jpg
i drilled and tried my torx bit trick... fail!
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/010-6.jpg
talked too a buddy and he said too weld up a stud and then weld a bolt too that. I am using a 110 gasless welder. the plane is stuck on the carrier so I have too use two extension cord. I firmly believe this is hindering me.:(
welded up a stud...
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/001-5.jpg
then i placed nut onto the stud
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/002-4.jpg
then i filled it with weld. i waited until the red went away then tried turning it.. broke. i went thru 12 nuts:mad3::mad3::mad3:
cegusman 06-09-2010, 11:58 AM You welder is not getting it hot enough. Heat the housing with a torch. soak it in pb blaster.
HEAVY METAL 06-09-2010, 12:07 PM thank you... i am off too go get pb blaster.
WillyZ 06-09-2010, 01:10 PM just an average guy tryin too raise a family and keep his hobby goin.
Those are the best projects, shows your love for the sport. I'm building my rig up on an extremely minimal budget and I am a single dad. they come first so everything else is second but just have to keep batting away. One day I'll have my rig up and running again and the boys and I will have many more memories to share again wheeling with friends an exploring our area.
Devil's Ride 06-09-2010, 01:34 PM I had the same problem on my 60. I ended up just taking my sweet time, starting with a small drill bit, and worked my way to a large bit, drilling almost the entire shank of the bolt out, then I hammered in an ez-out got a wrench on it with a cheater bar, and just added pressure to it slowly. The broken bolt finally "popped" and unscrewed by hand.
Use LOTS of PB Blaster or other penatrating oil. Heat is good too, then try twisting on the ez-out. (similar to your Torx idea)
Good luck! Its a royal PITA when these things break off.
HEAVY METAL 06-09-2010, 01:38 PM right on willy.. everything is for the kids bro...all about the kids!
devil's thank you for your input.. appreciated.
i am towing it too a wise old grasshopper with all the right equipment, he's gonna help me!
serialkiller 06-09-2010, 02:00 PM By far one of my favorite builds on here, cheap but done right. One day ill have enough money to pick up a old chevy and build it up
reddwarf 06-14-2010, 12:39 PM Might want to invest in a set of left-hand drill bits. You have to drill it out anyways and sometimes they will go ahead and back it out
And if you're heating, I would heat the stud, NOT the housing. Play your torch on the stud til it is red hot, then shoot it with liberally PB. THere will be lots of smoke, but keep pouring it to it. Then try your left-hand drill bits.
(this technique works great for frozen oil galley plugs in engine blocks)
HEAVY METAL 06-14-2010, 12:42 PM reddawrf.. thank you for your input, i will try exactly as you sugested. got too frustrated with it on firday so put her away for the weekend. i'll get er done this week!
thanks agaain.
irishraptor87 06-14-2010, 03:35 PM i have a picture reference on how i got mine out...
http://i50.tinypic.com/2me3fpi.jpg
first off, im fairly certain your welder is not quite enough juice
take a bolt the same size, and grind it down at the end like a taper
clean off the top of the old bolt, and weld the tapered bolt to the top of it like you see in the picture
then put a propane torch on the housing around the bolt hole for 20 - 25 minutes or so
then just unscrew it out with your ratchet
i saw that other people had said not to heat the housing, but this works as you can see from the picture, and if you do it right, the threads inside will be fine to use again like i am now
HEAVY METAL 06-14-2010, 05:12 PM fukin eh.. you guys r a great help....just picked up some PB blaster.. stuffs a lil hard too find in canada. gonna soak over nite with a couple coats. i also picked up the yellow bottle for the torch...sposed too be hotter?
brooks294x4 06-14-2010, 07:10 PM get some MAP gas, im not sure if it comes in the yellow can or not, but it gets pretty hot.
and i feel ya on gettin those bolts off. when i got my 60 someone torched the heads of those 2 bolts off. i had to grind them til i got clean metal and weld 2 big grade 8's with alot of heat from a 220V. it is a pain in the ass, but youll get it.
and i dig the build, keep up the good work.
JOKER4X4 06-14-2010, 07:36 PM get some MAP gas, im not sure if it comes in the yellow can or not, but it gets pretty hot.

It is MAPP, and it is slightly hotter.
HEAVY METAL 06-16-2010, 11:15 AM well they r still in there...ive drilled out most of the bolt, cant get my weld too stick too the bolt, no problems with filling up the nut but when i go too turn it the weld that i layed in my drill hole always fails. here is where i am at now, gonna tackle the front oen tonite...
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/006-6.jpg
HEAVY METAL 06-16-2010, 11:16 AM oh yeah, pickin up some left hand drill bits today also
Mr Clickerson 06-17-2010, 02:42 PM Might want to invest in a set of left-hand drill bits. You have to drill it out anyways and sometimes they will go ahead and back it out

This will expand the stud, making it harder to remove from the housing. Heating the housing will cause the housing to expand, making it easier to remove the broken studs...
Seriously, I wanna' know how many times you've tried that and ACTUALLY had it work, because that is the exact opposite of what you wanna' do.
HEAVY METAL 06-17-2010, 09:21 PM ive given up...im goin the u-bolt route.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/010-7.jpg
i left it like this for now. my new ubolt will be larger so i will do final fitment when i have it. i am making the upper mount out of 1" plate.
reddwarf 06-19-2010, 05:55 PM Seriously, I wanna' know how many times you've tried that and ACTUALLY had it work, because that is the exact opposite of what you wanna' do.
Every time I've torn down a SBC. The oil galey plugs always strip out because they are square drive and frozen in place.
Yes you are expanding the plug/bolt, but guess what, the metal around it expands too, then you hit it with penetrant and everything shrinks really fast, and it wicks the penetrant into the threads.
Trust me, yes I have done it, and yes it works. I learned it from an automotive machinist.
reddwarf 06-19-2010, 05:58 PM ground a notch out..
.... i am making the upper mount out of 1" plate.
Honestly this is a better plan. No idea why Dana didn't do it this way in the first place.
Now you have left hand bits and MAPP so no excuses next time :flipoff2:

HEAVY METAL 06-23-2010, 12:02 AM u bolt fits perfect. the 5" inside worked alot better then the 4.5 ..no splaying of the u bolt. made my measurements and my machinist buddy is going too make me a top plate tomorrow. excited too get her flyin again!

i removed all the rivet decals as i was finding it was taking away from the truck..as in too busy. good idea.. wrong product. I am also removing the 468 decal.. doesnt fit the theme.
i moved the exhaust closer too where it would be on the real thing..

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa104/HEAVY_METALYO/005-14.jpg
gr8pumkin 09-19-2010, 12:44 PM Looks good but you should pick up a can of the anti splater spray, it really helps with making a clean weld.

Welding to pumpkin or axle tube? Since you're a new to welding I think you'd be much better off finding a 230v welder. But you're welds actually don't look too bad, I've seen MUCH worse.

never heard of it.. how do you use it?

axle tube. i wish i could afford a bigger welder and tube notcher and bender and and and..lol but truth is I am just a single income family and stuff like that just isnt in the family budget :(... yet.
is my theory correct in if i good get good with my crappy welder when i get a real one it will be a piece of cake?
JMAN3203 09-19-2010, 02:31 PM never heard of it.. how do you use it?
Just spray it on where your welding and that's pretty much it. Keeps all the spatter from sticking to what you're welding on. Also, you can use it on your gun nozzle, or get nozzle gel, and you won't have any sticking to your nozzle.

Yeah, I just plunked down $780 on a Pro Tools 105 with 3 240 degree dies. But he threw in a HF tube notcher for free.:smokin::shaking:
And the idea behind the larger welder is to make sure you have ample penetration. But it should be pretty easy, you can teach someone to do all right MIG beads with 5 minutes instruction.
If you use your 115v, you could put a slight bevel in the plate, or overlap the welds like this which should help.

jeffers389 09-23-2010, 01:02 PM Looks good....though i would throw in a vertical support bar btwn the 2 long bars to reduce the stress on that one lonely weld point... just my 2 cents.

im sure it will be fine but you should weld a vertical support in between the bars close to the diff end
badass rig though
