View Full Version : 72 motor mount advice

I dont have any first hand experience with these trucks, so please forgive if this is a dumbass ? I'm replacing my '80 bent ass blazer with a '72 shortbed 4x4. The 72 originally had a 350 in it. I am wanting to run the 454 outa my blazer in this rig. From all the searching i have done i know that they make different motor mount stands for the 67-71 trucks that run big blocks. What gives on the '72 big block rigs? Do they use a different motor stand than the small block trucks as well, different motor mounts?, or do they work like the '73 and up trucks and just bolt right in where a small block went? I plan on using stock bbc manifolds in this setup if that makes any difference on the motor mount fit. Thanks, Laramie

the 67-72s were never big block 4x4 from the factory. The 2wds could get the 396 but the 2wds crossmember placed the engine about two inches further forward in the frame compared to the 4wds. If you keep the engine in the factory 4wd location the fire wall may have to be massaged to allow valve cover space. I can't help you with exhaust clearance, both of the conversions i have seen were auto trans and headers.

Move the engine forward and go with the short water pump stuff and it will fit correctly

I pulled a 454 out of a 71 4wd 1/2 ton longbed pu. The block was a 71 too according to a dealer parts guy I had look the block # up, and it all seemed pretty stock with a 465/205 behind it. The firewall is straight also. I still have the truck, guess I should check the vin #.

big blocks were not a stock application until 1978, and then only with a k30 or one ton option. anything previous to that was done aftermarket.
sure, you can make one fit using short water pump components. I have done the massaging on a blazer *(72, to be exact) and it was not that much of a big deal to put the dents in the firewall, nor was it an issue to install the newer crossmember in between the framerails. update to a 73-87 crossmember, and use the stock mounts for those years, and you can make it fit with a long water pump.
Its not that hard.

I guess i could try fitting the blazer X-member?? It already has poly clam shell mounts. I havent torn down the blazer yet to test fit anything yet. I had to chop the frame down to fit the short bed, and i have been busy painting on everything befor i go to swappin good parts into it. It was kinda a clunker that was fixing to be crushed, but i saved it :D. The only rust i gotta replace is the rockers and the pass cab corner, other than that its an extremely solid '72. I've just never jacked with one of these earlier rigs before, I mostly a Willys guy.

Move the motor forward 3 inches, i ended up useing a 73 crossmember.

I decided to go another direction with this build. I got the 1 tons from under my CUCV conglomeration swapped in, but now I need to swap in the later x-member, 6.5 turbo and nv4500/205 combo. Anybody have any decent pics of swapping in the 73-up x-member, also need to mount the hydroboost up to the 72 firewall, and try to get my '86 hydro clutch master mounted. If anyone has some pics/or tips to share to help this come out more cleanly, I would greatly appreciate it. I searched the subject some and found where some guys are using aftermarket hydro clutch setups, but havent found anything on the '85 stock style systems. Thanks in advance, Laramie.
