has anyone ever had a spindle turned down, i want to use the chevy spindle i have (got for free) to be able to use the ford 5x5.5 hub, it's only a 0.2188 difference, do u think a good machine shop would be able to do this?

Do your knuckles use 5 or 6 studs?
Chevy spindles will have 6, Ford have 5 or 6 (TTB)

i have the chevy knuckle and spindle and a ford hub, i just need the lug pattern to be 5x5.5, i've searched for a bearing that'll work w/ the ford hub and chevy spindle, it'll be in at the local parts store tommorow, but in case it won't work, i'll need to do something about the spindle, and mine is 6 lug spindle

Chev. has 2 spindles (big bearing/small bearing) one is the same as Ford. (I forget which)
I swapped to Chev knuckles, Chev caliper mount, Chev. spindles, same Ford bearings, Ford hub with Ford stubs.

What you need is the pre 76 1/2 ton chevy or wagoneer spindle. The ford hub fits on this spindle perfect, and it is exactly what you would end up with if you turned that one down. I ran a turned down spindle once when I toasted a wheel bearing and didn't have the right one. I would say if you do it keep the radius as big as you can at the shoulder where the inner wheel bearing goes. The 5 bolt ford disc brake spindles sometimes snap right there because they have a smaller radius (higher stress concentration) than the other spindles that use the same ineer wheel bearing (drum brake ford and pre 76 waggy and chevy 1/2 ton). I didn't have any poblems but I changed it out as soon as I found the right one, because I didn't do a very good job turning it down. I took off a little too much and didn't get it centered quite perfect. Hope that helps.

The actual date of the spindle change is diputed, but I think it was actually closer to 1978

I have a 1976 Chebby small spindle D44 with 1983 Ford 150 5x5.5" rotors. The new rotor and hub is only 31.00 at Auto Zone. It all bolts together no mods needed. :D

found out it is $90 to have the spindles turned down, so off the boneyard i go tommorow to find either early chevy or ford 6 stud spindles

don't buy a early ford spindle. The ford disc brake spindles are 5 bolt the ford drum brake spindles look similar but are too short to work.

so none of the ford spindles will work? if it has disc brakes and is 6 stud, it should right?
