: Picked up a set of seats today
cardinal fang 06-26-2009, 02:40 PM Going through recycle auto row, along sunrise today, stopped at a GM parts yard and picked up these seats.
They came out of a 2005 Pontiac G6, whatever that is. Have heavy grade vinyl with seat warmers, lumbar support and powered to boot :). I paid $400 for them. New ones that are similar run around $700. They are exactly the same size as my Nissan seats. Only drawback to them is that they have side air bags. I know zippo about air bags. so any one with some know how on how to disable them will be appreciated.
So, any one have a good design for new seat brackets? My Nissan seats I have in my rig now are well over 10 years old. I paid $50 for them at time. I just used the stock brackets, modified a bit, to mound the Nissan seats, but I want something more substantial than what I did before.
texican 06-26-2009, 04:30 PM Bill there should be some wires coming from the air bags, it is generally yellow, just make dang sure they are taped up secure and do not let them get near 12v........ no way to disarm, just make sure they do not get the 12v signal to deploy...............
cardinal fang 06-26-2009, 06:16 PM Thanks for responding Butch!!
I have the wires for the air bags isolated and tucked away, Gray&yellow. They were easy to find. No chance of them getting anywhere near a power source. I used my battery charger to test the motors on the drivers side seats. They are working just fine. Now back to building some seat brackets.:p
BTW, I was looking real hard at a TBI motor from the same place. Don't know what those motors go for in Texas, but around here, with all the accessories, including computer and stock harness, with alt., steering pump, and everything else hanging on it, ~$1200. I was quoted about that from 3 different wrecking yards. They also say, the TBI motors are getting harder to get, because of their age. About the same in your area?
Lil'John 06-26-2009, 06:46 PM Bill, $1200 for a TBI:confused::shaking::homer:
For $1200, go over to Specialized Parts Planet and get a 5.3L vortec with 30k... complete with 6 month warranty:smokin:
texican 06-26-2009, 06:54 PM TBI motors are so 5 years ago, as are the 350 Vortec, I would rather have a 4.8 than those and the 5.3 is way better than it...you can buy one for $750 with less than 100k complete with everything. They are 300k motors....

John, were is that place? I'll give them a call.

Here is there info:

When I was getting my 6.0l vortec, they were having a blowout on the 5.3s. Mine came with everything from the fusebox connector to cats. No wires were cut and we had a small mishap with the oil cooler lines(one got pinched at the rubber part)
They let me go back about 3 times to get misc junk for my engine: engine bay AC parts, air diverter valve, oil cooler, etc.
If you decide to get one, I do have the FSM for 2004... 5 books and 20lbs of love:eek:
cardinal fang 06-27-2009, 10:06 AM John, you are quick to respond!!
I called them, $1.5k for the 5.3. 6 month warranty from the time the engine is running.
What about adapters for trannies? Will all the 350 adapters work with the 5.3? Same bolt pattern on the back of the engine?

rockthedog 06-27-2009, 11:39 AM wow bill your gettin busy!:smokin:
as far as those airbag wires.....well we'll just consider that camp entertaiment for rubithon next year:laughing:
cardinal fang 06-27-2009, 12:49 PM Butch, thanks for that link. Lots of info:)
Glenn, not a chance buddy. Watching you change spring pins is a lot more entertainment than air bags exploding:laughing::laughing:

I will say similar patterns. One of the bellhousing bolts doesn't line up. Old V8 is 6 symmetric holes. New V8 has one in the middle but not one of the outers.
When I bolted my NV4500 up with AA bellhousing, I was concerned. I called AA up and they told me no issue.:smokin: Flywheel/flexplate is different. But still relatively easy to adapt to older stuff.
Did the $1.5 include tranny? I'll see if I have my old quote from them for the 5.3l. The 6.0l was $1800 dropped into the back of my truck:smokin:
The 6.0l was $1800 dropped into the back of my truck:smokin:
With tranny?
Lil'John 06-28-2009, 01:36 PM Without tranny... since I don't do autos:flipoff2:
I paid a little more than average compared to ebay. But three things sold me on this one:
Local - this means I can simply take a short ride to punch someone in the face if something went wrong:mr-t: And I ended up with the cut oil cooler line and a broken air diverter valve. I went back and had new ones the same day:eek:
Low mileage - Most of the engines I found that were lower priced all had 100k+. Most 30kish mile engines were in the same range if not more.
Complete - The engine was complete. We are talking air cleaner to cat complete. No cut wires. The threw the fuse box in. I returned and got all the engine bay AC parts.
I'm sure I could have waited a year or two and found that barnyard 20k engine for $500 but in the 6 months I shopped, I never saw one with that low of mileage at that price... local made it a bonus:smokin:
Keep in mind, if an engine isn't local, you tack on shipping of $100-$200.
cardinal fang 06-30-2009, 06:47 PM Went shopping again today, this time for 5.3 Vortec. One yard wanted $1500 for the full package, I found another yard that would give me that package for $950: yr 2000; 65k miles; all accessories; wire harness; throttle control by cable, not wire; no tranny; 6 months warranty. This seems reasonable to me. I most likely will get that motor.
Questions: Modify the stock harness myself, or send it out, or buy a new one off the internet?
Will standard Chevy motor mounts work with the Vortec? I have a set of Firestine mounts (the last pair he sold), I want to use.
Yes, I used the search function for a lot of questions. The link Texican provided was a big help. .
texican 06-30-2009, 07:28 PM I love using a new harness, the same guy I get the harness from will flash the ECM to remove stuff you don't want.......and the guy I use is a phone call away, the same guy that built the harness......Fuel Injection Specialty out of San Antonio Tx.
Check out the website I listed there are plates that adapt the LS series to your old style GM mounts. They are cheap.

Lil'John 06-30-2009, 08:21 PM Modifying stock harness is a piece of cake. Well, okay... it is slightly more difficult than playing with a TBI harness:flipoff2:
If the junkyard gives you an unbolted fusebox fitting for the wiring, it isn't too difficult to play with.
With mine, there were six(or seven) hot in run power wires and one always hot wire. The six(or seven) hot in run wires could be condensed down a bunch but I didn't. Two of them were for the injectors. Three are PCM related(PCM1, ECM, ETC according to fuse label ;) ) And last wire was o2. ALL of those wires were pink.
The only other wires really coming into the cab are going to be MIL light, diag port, tach signal, and maybe the vss if you need a electric speedo.
The nice thing with playing with the stock harness is YOU determine where everything goes. If you do an aftermarket or send it out, you rely upon someone else telling you were things around going to go.
In my case, I swapped the PCM from stock driverside over to the passengerside:smokin: I was also able to put the MAF sensor right where I want it.
If you decide to modify it yourself, I've got a boat load of the weatherpack, GT, and third style electrical connectors I can help you out with along with the crimpers for them:eek:
And yes, my engine fired up with no wiring issues after I played with it:homer: Aside from a fuel flow problem, it is nice:shaking:

Bought the plates tonight.
Will call Fueil Injection tomorrow and see what they want for a harness
cardinal fang 06-30-2009, 08:37 PM John, After messing with my TBI on my 55, I want the easy way. Buy the harness [:o
Lil'John 06-30-2009, 09:21 PM BTW, avoid the e2000 pump. There are as many stories about them working as there are of them not:shaking: The one I have did not work for my 6.0L Vortec.. not enough flow:shaking:
I'm going to try the Airtex e8248 this time around.:homer:
rockthedog 07-01-2009, 04:44 PM your making me want one of these bill:laughing:
