: 'Kick engine/trans/t-case into Sammy?

Anyone done this? Are there complications?

Seems to me it kills a few birds with one stone - stronger engine, EFI and dual t-cases all in one shot.

My buddy has the Sammy - I've got the Sidekick parts rig...

Get my angle? :D

The motor and bell are a near bolt in, but the tranny is a different story. My buddy Bobaki has the tranny in his zuk and the trans tunnel required major surgery to fit.

mine was a tracker engine and 2wd tranny . cant find it now but I have seen a tracker 4wd +sammy t/case ..........wheelbase had to be increased .......:D

I looked into the kick eng/tranny/case+zuki case swap. the only thing I found that the front driveshaft wouldn't clear the kick case.

I just measured this fast so the calculations could be wrong, I'm just another NEWBIE, we make mistakes.....if you can get it, it would be cool.......good luck

If I remember correctly, Mike Shaffer was running that a year or more ago on that black and blue rig. If memory holds he said it added about 8+ inches to the wheelbase. He was running a 2piece front driveline with an intermediate loop (dont know the proper term for it).

kicktran>kicktcase>ishaft>sammitcase

Still its all a waste with stock tcase gears. add 4.16s to the sammi case your about the same as just getting a 6:1s. stock kickcase and 6:1s would be cool or spend a lot more and upgrade gears in both, that might make it worth the trouble of fabbing mounts.

well not sure how much of a discussion y'all want to get started but, i too have been watching/wainting/measuring etc. and looking at the "options"

Currently i have a stock drive line w/ 4:1 t-case (toys/5.29s)

I have a kick 5spd/t-case and would love to use it somehow. (ill call this the kick-box)

I keep looking at the various pictures of disassembled kick-boxs, and the OTT plates etc... They dont seem to address the mid section (under the tranny shifter) that has a ~8" long section of nothing. Can the ntire kick unit be used with a "stacked" crawler section (like the toys) ? note: The outputs are slip splines...

One thought i keep having is to take the kick-box and, cut off the unneeded areas, and shorten the case enough then use a dual toy t-cases, With some cutting it would be shorter mabey than the 1.3 tranny. Worth it ? dono? just an idea....

Another thought is why all this work for a second t-case, a better option would be a 2nd tranny, up front and 1 t-case. this would allow shifting of any combination at all times (hi & lo range) and be usefull for onroad as wll...
I keep looking for a solution using the kick-box and/or sami box or other stuff, i havent devoted sufficient barin power to this yet, so no real solutions just an idea... thoughts? ideas?

The last thought is to hack a tranny from "xyz" vehicle, and dump any unneeded gears to shorten it up some... to do similer as aove, but this would involve lots of machineing to make it useful...

just a few randon thoughts on this rather ho hum day, from somoene who still calls upstate home....

Aside from the obvious "OH WOW" factor, for East Coast wheeling, is there really any serious benefit to having all those gear selection options? On the trail in my YJ, I spend most of the time in 2nd gear because the 6.5:1 first gear and 2:1 low range and 3.07 gears are too slow even with 35" BFG's. Once I get to a rocky section, first gear coupled with a Lock Right in the rear has done well for me so far. Then again, I have yet to run Tellico, just been kicking around Uwharrie (NC), Livingston (KY) and Royal Blue (TN). Granted, we are dealing with a COMPLEELY different drivetrain there, but still....

He's still running it. This is a picture from this weekend at the ERoCC competitions.

I have a picture of Shaffers drivetrain, with the funky two-piece driveshaft..... I'm at work now, I'll post it this afternoon from my home computer.

He is running a carrier bearing in it so that it doesn't interfere with the transmission.

This is the same thing that a lot of guys running hybrids, with a lot of wheelbase, do to keep that long front shaft out of the way.

well in my opinion.... yes......

last part is dead on.... with a low HP engine, having the "right" gear at all times is a major plus. I've wheeled all thos places with my TJ and was happy with stock t-case + 4.56s . BUT i had low end torque to pull what i had and could to blip the throtle when i needed to. A can't "blip a whole lot the the 1.3l ball of fire under my hood...

With the old set up of 31s and a 4:1 i was still wanting deeper gears, to crawl ... And i wasnt as controled as id like.

Not everyone drives the same. Some like slow and steady, some power up, some fast and feverish...

again just my opinion....

THANKS FOR THE SHAFFER PICS!!!! Somthing more to ponder on the drive home....

i was thinking on the way home about the potential to use the 1st front output as a ~PTO and i see in the pic that there might be room to hook up a compresser pump or somthing. Not on a comp. rig but for general trail use...

put @2 in N and engage #1 for PTO just have to be sure to use 2lo in the front one.... just some hair brain thought....prolly sniffed to much welding fumes....

Well, hot damn! That's exactly what I wanted to see :D

I'm actually trying to get my buddy with the Sammy to buy my beater Sidekick. I just don't think he's into an 8"+ wheelbase stretch on his mostly stock (aside from spring-over) rig.

Good info guys - its hard to find ;)

well guys i just bought a kick for 75$ with no engine or doors........ and my plan was to put this exact setup in but now that i see it with that queer front shaft i probility won't do it........may set it up on my spare frame to see how hard it will be but i don't think i'll do it....:flipoff2:
