IN the market for a Jeep to replace my 4runner.
I had a 93 YJ before with 4.0 and auto.
What Jeep would be a good base for a wheeler? I found info on axle ratios, trannies and the sort.
I dont know whether a TJ or YJ, 4cyl or 6cyl?
Im used to the Toyota 4cyl, so the 4cyl Jeep wouldnt bother me, especially since I would get the 4.10 gears instead of 3.07. I like the cost and limited lifting expense of a YJ over the TJ, but the advantages of the coil spring may out weigh that.

For now my plans are 33s, lift to fit those, lockers, with some daily commuting, otherwise later on it will be 37s or so, etc.... I want to start out with the right foot. Looking under 10k. Thanks.

go with a 87 YJ frame and body, and build it from there, cause every thing Jeep just breaks. Or just get another 93 YJ and re-gear and get one with a 4.0:flipoff2:

YJ with 4.0 HO motor. The 4.2 carbs are junk and need a 4.0 head anyways, and TJ suspensions cost too much ;)

the 4cyl Jeeps are a lot lamer than the toyota 4s. They aren't DOHC or even SOHC. You could get a 4cyl YJ with 4.10/4.11s, put in an explorer axle that went up to 4.10's and drop in a v8 :D

I think a 92-94 4 liter is a good bet. The 4 cylinder is not a friendly driver on the street, especially if you're going to be doing freeway driving. Definitely a post 91 6 cylinder for fuel injection. If you ask me you're best off trying to buy a jeep that is already built like or as close to possible as you want it. You'll save a lot of time and money in the long run and you'll still have plenty of projects to keep you busy.

So:question::question::confused: :rolleyes:
The second you throw those big 33s on, those 4.10s are going to need to be pulled any way.
I think you would be much happier with a 4.0L.
Definitly go with a YJ, then swap out everything but the frame, body and engine:rolleyes: :flipoff2:
As much as I love my YJ, my next 4x will be a Yota.
So much cheaper to build.

I agree with the frame, body and engine part. If you get a 4.0 with an AX15 its fine too...

if you really wanted to be cheap get a 4.0 with ax15, np231. Get a 4 to 1 for the NP231 and some 4.88s and a springover with 35s...there ya go. NOw you just have the axle problem...

So you see theres really no cheap way about it. :flipoff2:

No, even the AX15 is a pile.
Mine tore its self up at 60000.
I swapped in a T98 with 6:1 first gear and screw overdrive:D

No matter what you get the axles need to be replaced, so stop worrying about gears ;) Get the frame, body and engine you want, swap the rest ;)
