: Dash Options
Blind Driver 07-02-2009, 08:59 PM I ordered a replacement dash to replace the old OEM gauges with my Autometers, but it's not really what I'm looking for.
While driving around with the dash apart, I realized I like the dash better without the overhang of the dashpad. So now I'm looking to replace the entire assembly and possibly order a wiring kit as I am getting tired of looking at the jumble of green wires. Most of that junk isn't even hooked up anymore.
Anyone have any decent close up pics or know of an aftermarket unit?
JetFxr 07-02-2009, 10:26 PM Here's mine made it from 6066 aluminum a few years ago, simple to bend up then I welded the end caps on. The dash pad is from a right hand drive, no hump thing on the pass side (but a bitch to find if you trash one). I used VDO gages but Autometers would work also. This photo was shot before I finished the remodel, the Scout steering column plastic thing will also wrap around the column. The speedo is not installed either in this picture.
Urban Wheeler 07-03-2009, 12:54 PM I've seen a few guys lay an aluminum panel over the stock dash and fill it with new gages, then junk the dash pad.

budget76 07-03-2009, 04:48 PM Pretty sure Snoop made a cover that replaced the dash pad, like his guage panels he sells now for the round gauges. I know i've seen pics, it was just a big flat sheet covering the whole dash area.
The Fleckster 07-03-2009, 05:07 PM Here are two different ones from projects I have done. The difference was the position of the indicator lights. I like them because they are labled and have arrows instead of a plain led.
I used Mikes (IH only) stainless dash as that was all that was available at the time. TheyTurned out nice
The Fleckster 07-03-2009, 05:09 PM Lights moved. You gotta snug them down right before you install them to straighted them perfectley.
sprout4two 07-04-2009, 07:24 AM Fleck - Sweet fawking dash pad. That looks sick.

That's the same panel I ordered, but I was thought it would be a flush fit against the old dash. I may take measurements of the panel and duplicate/modify it later.

I think that was in the RockScout build, but I didn't want to go through the whole thread to find it.

I forgot about D&C:homer:. I like the flat panel much better.
Snoopy 07-04-2009, 12:27 PM The krawler dash. That's what I called it. Did it on Rusty. However, I still used round gauges.

Much better looking then using those old damn square gauges. I never could drill a square hole :homer:

and its called "Rotary Broaching"
I just looked and Mike now sells a dash conversion that uses the 2 1/16 gauges, he still has the 2 5/8 size too.
I removed my old gauges and the tin cover. I made a cardboard template and then cut of a piece of sheet aluminum I had laying around to fit and then made some cardboard templates of the gauges to figured out my layout. No speedo as the GPS does that job.
I used some 10 gauge copper wire to plug into the existing wiring harness.
edit.. I left in the dash pad as they are good to have in case of accident. Need to get a pic during the day

A coffee pot,can opener, toaster oven and a dish washer. Your dash has it all.:D
spreader 07-06-2009, 09:31 AM Great looking dashes, all. I have a 4X8X1/8 sheet of aluminum just for that project. Thanks for the ideas of where to start. Now if only my 345 could rev to that 10K Tach.

I was going to get a diesel tach as they only to like 5K and that would have been about right. I held off forever on that tach as it went to 10K, but since it matches the rest of the gauges I got it.
You can get some carbon fiber sticker to cover the aluminum to give it a cool look too.
War Pony, now I just need to work on the refrigerated beer dispenser.

for sure on the beer dispenser, and remember it needs to be as cold as the rockies.
Snoopy 07-07-2009, 09:45 AM Autometer's HotRod series gauges have a tack that are 7000 RPM and are full sweep gauges. Which is why I use them. That way, the freakin' gauge acutally moves between idle and redline.
RustoleumWhite 07-07-2009, 10:05 AM I've always liked the dash pad and square gauges. Been liking the NO dash I have in the racer/blue truck as well (just a triple pack of gauges screwed to the cowl and a tach strapped to the column). But thats really only appropriate for a stripped down rig.
Never thought of running without the pad and making a plate. Actually looks good (for a wheeler) and opens up the inside a bit. Food for thought, thanks for the idea(s) Snoop .

You need to get a UniTool or UniPunch and the right dies.. then square holes are EASY.
Just stick it in the press, apply pressure, done.
Snoopy 07-07-2009, 11:33 AM Thanks.
Funny, the reason I built the krawler dash in the first place was so that I could run a bar across the dash closer to windshield (or farther from the steering wheel). Plus the pad was cracked up and didn't match anything anymore.
Blind Driver 07-07-2009, 07:46 PM I'm liking this one a bunch for $275.00

It'll need to be modified to fit a Scout.

Have Tig welder will fit :D:D
Seems like two pieces of aluminum press brakes and then joined in the middle.
Hmmmmm..........................
Snoopy 07-09-2009, 02:21 PM That's awesome.... I'd run it.
