I am working on a 76 bronco. Trying to fix it up. Anyway I pulled the tranny (C-5, I was told) and had it rebuilt. I noticed there was not any linkage or cable going to one of the levers on the side. Not the one hooked to the column that changes the gears. I thought I would find what went to it when I put it back in. I didn't. What does it hook to? I assume it is a cable but I can't find one.

That should what they call your passing gear. Do you not have a rod or linkage that runs from the carb down to the side of the transmission? When you tromp down on the gas it will downshift and get on up and move.

Do you have an aftermarket carb on there? Alot of people wont buy the Ford Kick down linkage when they buy new carbs so they just have to ditch it completely. That could be why you dont have one.

BTW, the transmission is a C4. No EBs were ever factory equipped with a C5. I believe that was a V6 '80s Ranger tranny.

It does go to the carb. I could see where it used to be. Where it is now? so I will have to make another one. Thanks for the help. One more thing, about how many quarts of fluid should it hold?

according to the trusty old chilton's, it should be 12.5 pints. possibly 14.5. put in 12 pints and check:D

Bone dry C-4 (torque converter empty and new) will take 12 QUARTS. Never did trust Chiltons. Sorry.
I know this 'cause I've done this once in my Falcon, I was afraid I'd gotten too much oil when I got that case of ATF for that tranny:eek:
Best thing to do, If the torque converter is still full of oil. then fill it 'till the dip stick shows full when engine is OFF. Then fire it up and see if it will go into gear( not likely), check dip stick and fill as needed until it shows proper when idleing.
Good luck.

Reread orig. post: try filling the torque converter as full as you can without spilling it all over when re-assembling. then fill as needed.

thanks for the info alpo23. i recheched and my chiltons does'nt actually list the 76-77 bronco. it starts with the 78. must be a seperate book. but from most of the capacities charts, they must not account for the torque converter. most are between 12.5 and 16.5 pints.
