I've been working on my sammy again so I thought I would share some of it.

Bought it like this

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=371015&d=1211304065

Then added a 1.6 16 valve, 6.5s, yjs f/r,toys etc...

Ended up like this

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=395134&d=1223323517

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=395137&d=1223325096

This was/is my daily driver since I have a tube buggy but now the buggy is sold and so the samurai needs some more work. My goal is to have a strong reliable truck that I can drive to the trails and hopefully make it back :D I will be adding rocksliders (once i figure out what route I want to go) and some tube to the rear to protect the rear fenders

New plans are 22re, cam'd, header etc... diamonds housing F/R, 5.29s elockers, longs, rear chromos etc..

The front housing is 5" wider then stock (shortside) with a custom cut axle from FROR. So no more wheelspacers. Since the diamonds were originally not for elocker thirds I had to make some changes. These housings are a work of art :smokin:

Before

My 22re was sitting around waiting to go in a friends buggy before it ended up mine so a friend of mine stripped it down to a long block and put in all new seals etc.... I took the chance to clean up everything and powdercoat anything I could. Its the first time I have ever had a nice clean motor so im sure it will spring a oil leak as soon as I start it just to fuck me over

Its hard to tell from the camera phone pics but the paint is a cool gun metal grey with extra clear. I also added a TG PS pump and a GM 1 wire alt.

Then this past weekend I got a bit more work done

Made some motor mounts

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/motormount2.jpg

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/22remotormount.jpg

I was able to get the motor fairly low

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/22re.jpg

View from the top. I am going to cut out and redo my winch mount (which ties into the stock round tube up there) to make more room. The hood latch etc.. will also have to go

It looks like its going to fun mounting the airfilter, PS resi and all the other stuff in there

I had to do a little trimming in the tunnel. My truck came with a small bodylift so it made things easier. Hopefully sometime this week I can get the new shifters in place and do a little sheet metal work

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/choppedtunnel.jpg

For the tcase crossmember I took a TG toyota mount and started cutting

Here are the new tcase mounts

I used six 9/16 machine bolts for the crossmember and countersunk the 3/8 plate

Not quite a flat belly but it should work.

You talking about the lwbs only being sold in Hawaii? We got them in Canada too. They are mostly all rotted away now but there are still some around. This is a 85 so it came with weird half sj half sammy diffs and inboarded leaf mounts. It had "Samurai Super" decals lol

Heres a shot of it back on all 4s. This is without the drivetrain in it yet. It sits about 2" + lower now but I might take a leaf out. I used the yj 6 leaf packs in this truck and they have some arch in them. In my old zuk I ran the 5 packs and I remember them being pretty flat. I have 22" under the tcase skid now and wouldnt mind it being a bit lower

I also ditched the bushwackers and am going to build some floating fenders instead to keep the cops happy

Realy like your T case mount/skid "flat belly". Do you plan on leaving hood/grill stock and not extending to clear added room needed for motor/fan/rad.?

In first "after" pick, are the springs under the axles?

Im going to have to cut out the hood latch but will try to get the grill to stay were it belongs.

Im waiting for my new rad to come in the mail so today I started working on the interior. Since I had a ton of room over top of the tranny I decided to change the front of the tunnel.

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/tunnel2.jpg

While I was in there I said fawk it and ripped out the old samurai heating system.

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/tunnel.jpg

I'm going to put in a Mojave heater instead to keep me warm in the winter. This will also make it easy to hook up the heater lines since the motor is right up against the firewall and the stock core lines where practiculy touching the valve cover. Nice thing is that now I have tons of room behind the dash so I am going to mount the computer high up and hopefully my amp

BCzuk
07-23-2009, 07:34 PM
Havent had a ton of time to work on it lately but I decided since I wasnt going to be using much of the stock wiring I might as well rip most of it out and start over. So tonight I started ripping out the dash. Im not a huge wiring fan so this should be good practice. I only need the ignition, wipers, turn signals etc.. so it shouldnt be to bad. I want to remove all the stock crap in the engine compartment as well

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/Dashout.jpg

Im going to add a Petroworks dash so now I should be able to lower the windshield bar in the cage

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/Frontviewnodash.jpg

I also spent so time searching summitracing.com and found a 17 gallon fuel cell that measures 30"x17"x7" so out with the old 30 liter tank and hello 63 liters :D It should fit right up behind the rear diff and I will be able to use the stock fill location. I guess one bonus of having the longer over hang in the back :smokin:

This thing done yet?

Its slowly getting there.

I started trying to clean up the rat's nest of wiring. There was atleast 30 unused/spliced wires not doing anything from its previous life. I said fawk it and it ended up like this.

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/nowire.jpg

Every wire from the dash and in the engine compartment is gone. I ordered a 14 circuit pre wired kit from 4wheelinjunky to make things easier to get back in place http://www.4wheelinjunkycomoffroadproducts.com/servlet/the-10/hot-rod-jeep-14/Detail

I also made a shroud for my aluminum fan and am starting to get the rad mounted up

The rad im using is a a summit brand universal. I found a old post by Mike Hendrix suggesting this rad for ftoys but the size works for sammys. Only thing I am changing is the lower hose is getting switched from 1 3/4 to 1 1/2

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-380424/

Its a tight fit but I was able to get the lower mounts in. All I need to do now is tie in the top which I think I will do by adding a 10 gauge strap from headlight bucket to bucket also bolting to the fan shroud. The bottom mounts are made out of 1/4 plate welded like this [_] that will have rubber strips to hold tightly onto the tanks

Not any crazy tech here but im making some progress on the interior

Since I ripped out all the stock heater ducting I needed to make it so rain wouldnt come through the cowl vent into the cab. I ended up bending up a little 16 quage box to catch the water and with some 1/2 heater hose drain out into the engine bay. I just welded on flat bar and used the 2 stock studs to clamp and added a bead of silicone

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/venttray2.jpg

and since there was 3" of dried leafs in the my old heater core I stuck this in there as well

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/ventcover.jpg

I also finished the dash. I had to cut out the top corners of the dash to work with my rollcage but it worked out. I wanted to still have a glove box so I made a small aluminum pan (about 3" deep) and got it to fit. I made a aluminum channel for the defrost duct to hook up to thats about 1"x2"

Thanks to Pook for doing the tig welding for me

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/newdash2.jpg

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/newdash3.jpg

and the glove box. The extra small box in here is so my windshield can fold down without taking anything apart

Well stock toy is 55.5" I think so im 60.5 with 5" more on the short side. With trailgear wheels and my 35" ltbs im about 74" bulge to bulge in the front. Back is stock ifs width

I was able to get the tunnel built and installed. I made it removable and used a type of silicone they sell for sealing up drafty windows. The silicone comes out of the tube about 75% set so its easy to work with and peels off easily down the road. The rest was rhinolined.

I still need to mount the mojave heater but its nice and roomy under the dash now

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/interior2.jpg

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/interior.jpg

The seats are also in. I went with the Corbeau Baja rs seats from Trailworks on the board

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/interior3.jpg

They are a wide seat but I still had lots of room for the twin sticks and some cup holders down the road

I bought a 17 gallon fuel cell from summitracing to replace the stock 30 litre tank. I decided to try and make it work with the factory fill tube so some aluminum tube was tigwelded onto the side. I also installed 4 Walbro snowmobile pickups in the cell

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/Walbro.jpg

http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd337/slicknic604/fuelcell1.jpg

The tank is 30" x 17" x 7" high so it fits pretty tight between the rear frame rails. I bent up a gas tank skid plate out of 1/8 hot roll

this thing is frig sweet man... If you are going to cut it a bit anyhow I would ditch the bodylift :) The B/L came with mine to but is only 1" over stock. My front diff has longs with a custom short side from Brian at FROR. The rear is toy IFS width The housings are also from Brian :smokin: I think the belly height has settled down a little bit from the new drive train weight. It does sit a little higher then I would like but I havent chopped my fenders yet so it works out. The 35" ltb with street pressure is almost as high as some 37" SS :)

dam man looking good. the yj flairs look better than the bushwackers but i think you idea of crusher corners, and built fenders is the way to go.

I bought some used rubicon TJ rears (1" wider then stock i think) from the junkyard cheap so I am going to run those for now and then try to tackle the crush corners down the road.

They're from this far off land called Canada, eh. :flipoff2: They got 'em elsewhere in the world, but I don't think they ever made it to the states. You can look into importing them from up here though. It's been done.

Chet

as long as it was sold new in Canada you can import one into the states easily. The only problem is is it worth it? Most are full of rust and take alot of work to restore. I would stretch the frame on a shorty and get an aluminum tub from Aqualu when they come out.

Once they are 25 years old then it is easy to import them into the states from canada.

Well I have it driving and insured now. Havent taken any pics :homer:

My front main seal started leaking right away so I fixed that. Now the rear mian is leaking :( but its not to bad and will probably have to wait until after KOH.

It drives nice except it seems to be running to cold. It also rattles like a sob. I have heavy duty motor mounts and TrailGear tcase mounts which equal rattling Samurai tin. I think I will be able to chase them down. After this weekend I should have the front bumper finished and the rocker guards. Ill take some pics

The Corbeau seats also sit to high so I am ditching the stock flip ahead seat on the passenger side and cutting out the drivers mount. Both seat will be bolted almost on the floor

Its a Reflex LED light from VisionX. I wired it last night and tried it out on the way home. It is bright  I think this 20" light puts out 9000 lumens

So the zuk made the journey to Johnson Valley for KOH. I was able to run a bunch of the trails in the days after the race. The truck did will except for the front leafs took a beating. I need to either make a front traction bar or swap in a military wrap from another set for the front. The body got a bit of love mainly from Wrecking Ball :D

Here are a couple pics someone emailed me. These are from my new favorite trail Outer Limits. This was the first day out wheeling. I took the flares off when we got back to camp. Big thanks to Pook for spotting me all week

Besides a few new rattles and squeaks it still drove nicely at 70 miles a hour this morning on the way to work so I am pretty happy. I do need to replace the 2 tweaked front leafs. The body has some needed character now.

I was actually able to get most of the dent out yesterday after work. I just took out the seatbelt pod and added a big washer and nut to the inside and started wrenching on it. The door still needs some love though to close the gap. Im going wheeling this weekend so I will see what I can do :D

I think I am going to try making something like this genright blank except I will make it go up and over the top edge and have some bolts through the inside lip too. I dont think I will make it round the corners to the back. That way I can take off the flares and still have the narrow zuk body. I think I am going to do the virtual lift at the same time so I can start using my brothers used comp Krawlers on future trips

Ya they are rear tj flares front and back. I grab mine from a couple saharas since they are a inch wider then stock flares. They are help on with sheet metal screws so they come off in about 5 minutes total with a small screwdriver

It has been living in the garage for a couple weeks since my tranny blew up on my way home from work. The tranny that blew up used to be in a friends truggy so it had some serious abuse through it already before i stuck it in, so probably didnt like driving 60 mph to work everyday. Took it for a spin this afternoon and its all good.

Im going to try and start my rear quarter protection this week so i will snap a few pics of the progress.

Any recent updates? killer build.

Been awhile since I looked in this thread.

Truck has pretty much stayed the same since the trip to the Hammers. Had alot of fun local wheeling/exploring this summer.

I am going to be making some changes starting after a business trip I have to take in a couple weeks. Plans are to link the rear and add around 6" or so more wb back there eliminating some of the over hang. I will also redo the bumper, move the gas tank, up and redo the inner wheel wells etc. If all goes well I might link the front as well :grinpimp:

I havent done much to zuk lately but I am slowly saving money and collecting parts so hopefully I can start the next phase soon :D

I did mount up some new 37s. A local 4x4 shop (BigCountryCustoms) hooked me up with a great deal on some new Procomp Stickies. I am definitely going to need to do some trimming front and back.

The only real damage to the body is the back right quarter from the Hammers trip last year.

keep up the good work

BCzuk

Thanks.

I dont have any pics of it right now but I can tell you it is attached with some 3" x 1/4 flatbar that runs a long the outside of the frame on both sides. Probably about 8" or so. Then it has three 1/2 bolts per side going through the frame. I also welded on some 1.5" tube that goes from the side pieces back to the flatbar to reinforce it all.

I am taking the bumper off soon and making a new one so I will snap a few pics for you
