AHHHH. my over priced fj-40, which I haven't even wheeled yet is in the shop for some oil leaks. After being fixed, i get an unwanted call. The guy who is working on it thinks a bearing deep in the motor is worn out (making a pinging noise). He doesn't think its a lifter or anything. PLus, a spark plug came out mangles a few months ago. So, he thinks im going to either need to rebuild or drop a new one in. We're running a treated oil to see if that helps, and then we're going to run the piss out of it up in Heavener OK. He is not sure what'll happen, but has an idea. So, I'm planning for the worst and i need some ideas. Current motor is a 350 with a corvette fuel injenction. I really love the power, and want to keep the fuel injection, but would also like to step up to a vortec.

Any ideas? and where should i look? I'd rather buy used than fork out the cash for a crate. This thing is the money pit, but it'll be nice when ready to stomp on some rocks!!!! Thanks in advance!

Save yourself a big headache get a crate motor, put on your fuel injection setup you have, and call it good!:skull:

350 out of the crate realy isnt that expensive. I would say about $800. Compared to some of the other engines it is fairly cheap and reliable. Besides needing fuel injection, i luv mine! Now i just need to convince my dad that fuel injection is a safty priority that he should cover ;) :D

I think your Fuel Injection is a Multi Port setup which is actually better than a Vortec Injection which has only 2 injectors for 8Cyl.

I would rebuild what you have since you already have all the stuff for it to work.

I have a buddy in NW Arkansas that will rebuild it CHEAP if you would like his contact info.

You have to know what era Corvette FI system you have before you can even think of buying an engine of any kind, the had a Tuned port system pre 87 that will fit on the early heads, then the 88 and newer which has a different head bolt pattern.
The Vortec system 96 and newer truck style, is an 8 injector multi port, but the only difference in the Vortec 350 and the older TBI is a roller cam, & better heads.

Rebuild kits for a 350 are only $160. That's pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, cam, oil pump, etc....add in a little machine work to knock the bore .030 over, take .010 off the crank rods and mains (if needed at all), $$ to press the rods to pistons, and another $100 or so to upgrade the cam and your all set.

My last 350 rebuild ran me $250, with no machine work done. 4+ years with that motor and you'll find nothing torquier. Northern Auto out of Iowa was my parts source. Took it out on a Fri night, rebuilt it Sat and Sun, tuned Sun nite....

...and promptly filled the block with skum water the following Saturday....fortunately, mine also runs fine on 2psi of oil pressure! lol
