I spoke with someone who said not until Mid July. There is still snow on the back side, and it has to be completely dry.

They said possibly Saturday...

? where can you leave tow rig and trailer for Barrett ?

Redheck

Once you get up there, you will pass a parking lot on the right, it doesn't look like it's ok to park there, but it is. We had to unhook our trailer from the truck and put them in two different spots.

if you get to a sign that says "no trailers beyond this point" then you've gone too far.

I called and talked to the forest service today. It was said that the trail is expected to be open in a few weeks last week in july or first week in august.

Gate posts are 82" wide, if you are wider than that, you can't get on to the trail.

can someone give me a little more info about B. Lake and post some pics if you have them. i just moved to Sac from portland...everytime I have come down here before I have just run the rubicon. my friends and i are wanting to do a trip for my bachelor party from 29 july to 2 Aug and would like something different than the 'con...hopefully more challenging. any pics would be great.

also, can anyone give me input on fordyce in a couple weeks. we are all on at least 37's locked 3/4 ton and up etc...could we cross the creek?

Barrett isn't any tougher than the 'con, just different, if you want something more challenging, try Fordyce (if the flows are low enough)

Yes, The trail is open...I went up this last weekend.

Conditions: Dusty, dusty, and dusty.....did I mention it was dusty?

The plane wreck is still there as well. Over the years a few folks have felt compelled to bring "souvenirs" home from the site and ruin it for the rest of us but for the most part the plane is still there. Still plenty to see. And the hike to the site is very nice.

Oh yeah...bring mosquito repellent...

On Labor day 09' a few buddies and I had to fend off some dipshit from trying to take one of the propeller blades of the semi-intact engine. He was hitting it with a large steel bar trying to separate it from the engine. We asked him WTF he was doing and told us he wanted a souvenir for his son. We told him he wasn't leaving with it. By "we" I mean 4 200 plus pound dudes with very pissed off looks on their face and my 80 pound dog. He got the idea and walked away very swiftly.

Someday when I have kids this is definitely something I want to share with them. People taking souvenirs from this site is chicken shit.

I don't think the guy was a wheeler though, because I looked for him later in camp and couldn't find him.

This is from another thread, not my pictures but I have been to the plane crash.
Ask and you shall recieve. A group of us hiked up there last year and found the new writing. I remember reading some details about the plane, probably on this site. It was a military plane that went down in a storm....thats about the extent of what I remember

My family and I did alot of off roading during the 80's and 90's with the Sierra Treasure Hunters based out of Sacramento, Ca. During that time frame, the Barret Lake Trail was one of my favorites. I along with my family and fellow club members had visited the site of the plane crash several times. At that time, there was no writing on any of the wreckage. I am glad to hear that some conciensous individuals were able to deter another individual from removing any of the wreckage. TREAD LIGHTLY ladies and gentlemen so that generations to come may also enjoy the sport and activities that we enjoy today.

I forget the names of the road, as its been years since I cut across, but you need to turn at IceHouse Resivior iirc, then after a couple miles it splits onto a forest service road.... check a map, thats what we did, it wasn't too bad.

Just got back from Barrett lake, with four other club members, whom all drive buggies, and all went throught the gate. We even had a full size blazer along as a guest, and he made it through the gate.
We spend a lot of time working with the Forest Service and the powers that be in an effort to combat all the idiots out there doing their part to destroy the trails that we are trying to keep open.
And people making generic statements about "FULL width Buggies" illegally on the trail, is just the kind of press that we don't need. Unless you take out the tape measure, or witness someone violating the gate, don't assume anything. I don't know of anyone who does not have a picture phone or a camera these days. Take pics.
If someone IS out there illegally, then they indeed need to be busted.

Our club was the only group back there that we noticed that may fill that description. Very nice weekend with not a lot of traffic. Some of our group made the run back and forth several times to shuttle in people or gear. And the reason that we are perhaps defensive about the statement, is that this is not the first time our presence there has been questioned. For the one guest that we had along with us, we even posted the widths of the posts and lock box on our web site to make sure he would fit.
Statements like the one made are not healthy for our sport when they make an accusation of wrong doing based merely on assumption.

Loose nuts doesnt have anyone with a buggy so i don't know what your talking about. As its probably obvious i drive the blue wj that was in the loose nuts camp. Now personally i never got within a hundred feet of any of your rigs so i cant comment, but i wondered a little bit about one of the buggies that set up camp next to us. No, no tape measure but i know my 65" front axle with 8" wide 4" backspace wheels is pretty tight, that frknt d60 with low backspacing wide beadlocks looked pretty wide.

If everyone clears the gate then theres no beef and im really glad to hear it.

I doubt you will see any. It sounds like cdub350 was basing his "Not sure what they did about going through the narrow gate, but they were definitley wider than it." on nothing more than his opinion and assumptions and not fact. I was in and out of the trail a few times this weekend and I did not see any rigs that appeared too wide to fit through the gate.

I was a little disappointed to see a handful of very full width vehicles out there.

What is wrong with full width? Do you (and the forest service) think that they somehow harm the trail? :shaking:

An ill-equipped rig will likely do more damage to the trail than an overly equipped one, yet the ill-equipped ones have no restrictions.

Rigs don't tear up the trail- PEOPLE do. Its all up to the driver!

Unless or until you see somebody actually doing something wrong, I would suggest that you don't assume that they are. If they are, then educate them or report them.

mudratz
09-07-2010, 02:39 PM
Nothing at all wrong with full width. This particular trail has some tight turns though the trees and a full width would have to cut its way through, or go off trail to make it. Just trying to keep the FS people happy.

And your remark about ill equiped rigs is right on. And there are those who we are trying to teach that lesson to. It isn't the built rigs that go off trail and make their own new bypass because a section it too hard.

Have a great day - hit the trials whenever you can.

Kind of off topic, but I'll just go for it.
What do you Barrett Vets think about taking a quad up the trail?

Thanks

mudratz
09-13-2010, 09:53 PM
Personally I have no problem sharing the trail with anyone who respects where they are. The only extra concern for quads or motorcycles is that it is easier, and perhaps more of a temptation to go off trail. That in fact includes not going off trail to avoid any obstruction, whether it be rocks or a stopped vehicle. Which is my exact philosophy for 4 wheelers. It amazes me that someone drives a trail, and then chooses to go around obstacles that they feel are too difficult. There are trails out there for every and all experience levels and vehicles, pick an appropriate one, and have a great time.

Understood...and with that being said, do you think a quad can manuever through (NOT around) these obstacles?
I'm not a quad owner or rider and I'm taking my Jeep, but I have friend that wants to take his quad...so please forgive my ignorance when it comes to their capabilites.
Thanks

I have run Barrett on my quads a number of times. There are some difficult spots so be prepared to give him a hand to get over the rocks. It all depends on the quad and the rider.

Thought I'd throw this up to give a good visual of the width of the gate. My FJ is almost exactly 80"

If you can get through the first obstacle, you'll be fine for the remainder. Just don't be like me and blow your spider gears in the rear diff 4 miles in....a front wheel drive XJ was not easy to get out.:grinpimp:

This happened at the first in/last out Rock Garden. It's just over 3/4 of a mile from the trailhead.

Not my rig, it's my friend Sean's (as seen in the Disable Sports PBB show).
I spotted the rest of the way, while my brother drove my rig (it was his first time wheeling, let alone driving).
Took us about 4-5 hours to go the 3/4 of a mile.
The log made it all the way to the trailer.
We did have to re-strap it several times (straps would get eaten).

Gotta love trail ingenuity! I was afraid that i was going to have to be towed out like that, luckily the spiders blew close enough to the trailhead, that all i needed was a heavy right foot to get out.

Actually that is my fiance's rig....i had to drive it through there for her. She was afraid to get any damage....oops!:D She made it 4 miles in with us. It wasn't until i blew the rear end of my XJ that we had to stop.

Surprisingly the only damage to the LC on the way in was to the rockers, on the way out we really put some dents into it! I was waiting to get the first dent so i could finally start the build up.

Damn Matt, I cant believe you got the LC through all that. Puttin that rig through the ringer lol. Looks like a good run. sucks about the rear diff tho, that puts a damper on things.
