I found a 1991 Samurai 42k miles w/ springover and 33x14 boggers, 5.13s, locked f&r, stock axles. He wants $4k for it.

I also found a similar one for the same price with a swapped in 1.6L w/ 32k miles on it.

These things are so cheap I am going to have to get one. What axles would be good to upgrade to? I want to run 33x14 boggers for now. I like the Spidertrax axles, but they don't seem that strong compared to d44s.

How strong is the stock t-case? Whats the biggest engine I can swap?

Thanks, Zach

The 1.6 will have a little bit more power than the 1.3

The axles to upgrade to depend on what you have access to. Either Toyota's or D44's are a great swap. Most go with Toy's since they are very easy to get and have lots of options available. The D44's typically are a little bit wider which might be a problem with the law in your area.

Many have put 4.3 V6's in them. Some others have put 22RE's in them. Depending on the engine size you may need to put a body lift on to clear either the hood or the tunnel.

The tcases are actually pretty strong. Go with the 6:1's. You can pick up a complete case for about $1200 or the gears for under $1000. I wish they were out when I geared mine.
