Since I had some free time I added an electric pusher fan. Was having some air flow issues at low rpms which caused the Scout to run between 200 and 210. So far the added 880cfm the 12" fan produces keeps the temp right at 180 or lower during normal street driving. I'm hoping that the fan and low gears (4:1) will generate enough airflow to keep the motor cool on the trail in 100plus temps. If I find I need a little more flow then I will put the 18" 7 blade fan on. My cooling system is now made up of a high flow aluminum radiator, fixed 17" 6 blade fan & shroud, electric 12" pusher fan, tranny cooler, power steering cooler, hood louvers, cut-out inner fenders, and a RS 180 thermostat. Last pic is of the new Bling Red Dana 300. It's now sporting an Advanced Adapter output shaft, Teralow 4:1 gears, and twin sticks. I'm hoping the gears hold up :nuke:

Thanks to Scouty (Matt) and Jesse for coming over on Friday and Sat to help me get my junk running. Finished up about 7pm sat and took it for a spin around the block. The 3 to 1 is a big difference over the dana 20 2 to 1 and the 5+ to 1 is a huge difference. No more just hammering it up an obstacle, I can crawl:smokin:

Jesse had just left Sat and my wife came out to say she called 911 as our son passed out. He worked a long day as a life guard and walked in the door and drank a big glass of cold milk all at once and took about 3-4 steps and down he went. He was only out like 30 seconds she said. The paramedics said they wanted to take him in to get check out, so about 2am we got home. His fine!! That killed Sunday and I spent the day cleaning up the driveway from all the Scout work and other junk that had collected. About 5pm we went to the lake with friends to have a BBQ.

Jesse came over on Sat to grind the front yoke a bit as it was almost touching just sitting there. A bit of grinding and my old Tom woods joint and even at full droop I have room to spare. All that grinding left these burrs on the ground and I think I pick a few dozen out of my hands. So Sunday I sweep up everything and then washed it all down as my wife likes to walk around bare foot and I would never hear the end of that one.

Jesse and Matt busted me with bondo and wax in the garage and I told them I'm turning my Scout into a show truck:flipoff2:

One pic of the shifters installed. Had to make some offset to keep the sticks up right and in the tunnel cover.

Well I know everyone is probably worried because I haven't shared I a few weeks..... Here's the skinny ... went on vacation, did inventory, watched demolition derby, turned 30, sold piece-o-shit jeep for 1500 proffit, fuel pump in dodge, 15-16 hour days for the last 1.5 weeks, thats about it now Im going to try and get back to actually working on scout...

Sat: Went and finally got contacts. Getting tired of not being able to see when I sweat profusely. After that, I just slept the rest of the day. This being the first week back to work at MATES, I'm not used to actual manual labor. All we're doing now is transmission rebuilds, and power steering pumps.

Sun: My Brother, and I made some progress with going through our Mom's stuff. I've more milk glass than you can shake a stick at. Then helped our neighbor, move her stuff to another place. Going to help her again today, after my dentist appt. at the VA hospital.

Bought some more goodies for my "new" TIG machine and spent a little time tinkering with getting it setup. I ordered a new foot control for it, some 1/0 cable for a ground lead and some, and some SOOW 6/4 (only need 3 conductor, but found an good deal on 6/4). Still waiting for all that stuff to show up. Once that stuff shows up, all I will need is a little TIG coolant and I'll be ready to melt some stuff.

Craig, did you cut & plate your tranny pan? How did that cast Al weld up?

Worked and managed to eek 3 hours out of my schedule to make it to the GWBB. Saw Rusty's new 147 in the unrunning and running state, it's amazing what enough gear heads and tools can get running. BS'ed with everyone I could before I had to go.....to work.:(

HUGE! Stock scout size, but made of aluminum with 2 rows 1.25" tubes. .

The pan came out good for not having welding aluminum since I don't know when. I started out with a pure tungsten rod with a balled end and the arc wander all over and was not working that great. I welded up the 1/2 NPT hole someone put in there for a temp gauge, which was re-drilled for 1/8 NPT. So I switch back to the 2% with a sharp point and it welded much better.
The 2% tip gets a smaller ball vs the pure tungsten.

Friday picked up my boys from the ex-wife.

Saturday my oldest and I worked on my Power Steering Box :smokin:. Then we rode the mini bike around the school down the road. Went to the movies and watched Transformers II.

Sunday we just hit up a couple of Farmers Markets and hung out with the boys.

Sunday night I finished putting my steering box back together. I think I put the balls in correctly...:shaking:

Looks like it welded just fine. 4043 or 5356 filler? I read another tip somewhere that I have not personally tried, but they recommended 2% Ceritated tungsten with a sharpened point. Seems like more and more people are moving away from pure tungsten w/ balled end for aluminum.

4043 filler. With the amount of power needed the ball got bigger then the electrode. I have a pack of the radioactive rod:eek:, so thats what I used. It still gets a ball on the end after a couple seconds, but it's like 1/2 the size of the electrode so much easier to control.

My first daughter turned 3 on Friday, so Saturday was party day and a minor-league (it's all we have here!) baseball game Saturday night.

Late Sunday night I managed to grind the rear calipers on my trail Scout and bolt up the tires again so for the first time in a long time it's back on 4 tires and in a runnable condition.

Brakes need a little more bleeding, and I still need to re-pack the back after the little tubbing operation, but it might be trail worthy in short order.

Which is good.. since Blair came up for the party and is talking about wheeling and camping in 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, I need to prep the camper and the street Scout for a few days near Glacier NP this week for camping and the 75th Glacier Waterton Hamfest (http://www.gwhamfest.org). Seemed like a fine enough excuse to visit Glacier again. Maybe the 3 year old will appreciate it a bit this time.

Took my argon tank in for a fill, Made an agreement with a friend that I will help (do all) the wiring on his CJ. He swapped in a TBI SBC and I get to make it run. This coming weekend I will work on that, and in return he will help hang the axles under my Scout. Once the axles are in it's just a whole bunch of little things I can do on my own.

I call BS on not welding aluminum in a while. That looks pretty good for not having practiced in a while. You must have had a little experience before this.

I will agree with you about using the 2% and a much smaller ball and much less arc wander. I experienced this when showing Mechanos a few things on my ancient dialarc 300 while we were waiting for some mysterious fluid that I managed to pump into my CTD. Of course Mech's first stringer pass on Al was pretty good as well.

As far as the weekend not much Scout related ripped out carpet in the basement only to find a few more windows leaking and figuring out that we wanted to wire the basement for surround sound, tv's with video input in two locations still working on that project.

I took a class at the local collage 2 years ago, which help a lot. But I have not made any aluminum projects. The reason it looks ok, is because of all the helmet time on steel projects.:D One day I will make something for the Scout out of aluminum, just not sure what.

I would love to see what my tig beads would look like now, haven't touched a tig since high school (7 years).

Sat nothing cool.......Oh wait I traded 12 60lbs sacks of ready mix concrete for a case of cheap beer. Made some giant sawhorses for my camper to sit on.

Sunday drilled holes in my drivers side frame rail for shackle hangers. The rails were two thirds full of dried mud, so spent some time washing those out. Also machined the sleeves for said shackle hangers.

I'm out to work on that project now.

Tonight saw as bunch of wrenchin' on the tow pig. Changed the trans oil & filter, adjusted the bands and installed new rear d-shaft u-joints.

As far as the TIG goes... I'm thinking about learning Al first. I read an article by an old timer that suggested learning Al first if you can. His reasoning: If you don't know how to weld anything else, you don't know how hard it is to weld Al since you don't have anything to compare it to. :flipoff2: If you learn Al first and get good at it, steel will be a breeze.

Our High School shop teacher made us learn AL first. Actually I spent my first semester of Tig on nothing but AL preparing for competition.

Spent almost all weekend on the road driving to Medford to see my grandpa, conflicting reports had him either days away from death or months, I didn't want to change it so we went and saw him. Friday I would have said days -- but by Monday I'd say months.

Tacked on a few more miles and drove to San Fransisco to see my brother who is home on leave from the Army. He is just back from 15 months in Djibouti. We went through his gun collection that has been in my dads attic. I ended up with 2 guns and enough spent brass to open a reloading store... :shaking:

Missed the ol' GWBB for the 2nd year in a row.

Well FUCK ME.....FUCK ME HARD IN THE ASS.

So Sunday I get my steering box all back together...looking good. It did a weird binding up while I was "bench" testing it and cycling it from gear lock to cap, looking for sector shaft binding. I thought hmmmm that is weird. So I tore it partially back apart and found nothing out of the ordinary.

Last night I install the box, reconnect steering linkage and tie-rods etc...and start to get ready to plumb some lines for steering, remote oil filter etc. I think to myself that it would be a good time to kind of clean up the floor no since the "dirty" work was done...

Then I found the little bitch :mad3:. Tonight I have to do a speed tear down and try and put this little fucker in. I imagine the missing ball was the "mystery" bind up that I couldn't figure out. Luckily I found it on the floor...:shaking: I am going wheeling for the day Saturday and am quickly running out of time fucking around...

I spent Saturday pulling my motor out of the Scout do to worn rings & knock/spun bearing.
Also fabbed up some new motor mounts for the replacement.

Sunday I drove up to Placerville & back to pick this up from Aggro hear on the board....

Stripped it down & started cleaning it yesterday & today.
I'll be spending spare minutes hear & there over the next few weeks, cleaning, painting, and assembling the motor. Followed by cleaning, prepping, and painting the engine bay.
