: chevy half ton diff
64jserries 07-13-2009, 05:39 PM i got 2 chevy 1/2 ton front ends and was curious if anywon had any web sites for axle up grades and so forth, i have 2 half ton front ends and i am also curious if anywon has any info on 4 way steering, i am putting the differentials under a 1964 jeep willys j series truck, i am putting the jeep body on a toyota frame, i have a 258 strait 6 and i am not quiet sure what transmission or transfer case is in it i have not yet cleaned it off and got the numbers off it yet. it has a pto wench wich was a tank when i had it all together through out high school, the reasoning for the axle swap is cause i had the stock closed knuckle front end in it and it had like 8 spline axles that just blew out hubs and snaped axles left and right and just wasnt worth the effort of keepin that running gear in it. any helpful information would be awsome i plan on keepin pictures and updates on the whole build.
extremetoy 07-13-2009, 05:44 PM Nice grammar, punctuation, and spelling :shaking:
Try using the search function.
Did you spell SERIES wrong in your screen name on purpose?
Sometimes i wish i was that dumb....Anyway i suppose we shouldn't bother asking if you have a dana 44 or a GM 10 bolt.
GMCTruxrule 07-13-2009, 06:52 PM For axle upgrade sights, do a google search on "Dana 44 upgrades" and tell me what the first return is....
gmcxt 07-13-2009, 07:03 PM This reminds me of that flipping a 14 bolt to make it a "free high pinion" question.
Sounds like a good plan. Do it!
mountain_man 07-13-2009, 07:04 PM allow me to put this so you can understand.

That line took me a little bit to type and re-fix the spaces i kept making. Also if you can't use search then you need to visit vendors.

obviously you are fucking stupid, you put a space between "youjustneedtousethesearchfunctiontogettheansweryou " and "arelookingfor"
damn i guess it puts a space in for you
Grumpy_old_fart 07-13-2009, 10:50 PM lmfao,
you guys make even ME giggle..
justscoutin 07-14-2009, 06:59 AM half tons are for mallcrawlers. get yourself some rockwells and be done!
FrankenToy 07-14-2009, 07:42 AM Personally, I would use two 1/4T axles, such as a D30, instead of two 1/2T axles. With two 1/4T axles you would save 1000 lbs in axle weight alone...

Not to mention they use less gear oil!

gmcxt 07-14-2009, 07:30 PM Snow wheelin, well hell why didnt ya say so. I would suggest lock the front and L$D in the rear. Or weld them... Look into a C-clip eliminator kit, or get a 9" rear. Then it would be a Jeep, Chevy, Toyota, and Ford mutt truck. The big three and the big Jap! I want pics and lots of um.

i live in oregon. I live on the west side, where we dont get 6 to 7 feet of snow... and you guys might get 6 to 7 feet a YEAR, but not all at once. if youre wheeling diamond, or crater, i could see you in that much. Somehow, though, i just dont. As for money, i dont have any. Im a regular guy who builds regular shit, and I dont spend very much money doing it. I use carefully chosen parts to get the most out of what i have.
you will not understand it until someone draws you a picture... besides, you make us regular english speaking guys from oregon look bad.
rear applications for front axles are typically a bad idea when using half ton stuff. the joints simply will not hold up. sure, anyone could do it. but it wont last very long.... like 300 feet, max.
just a bit of advice from someone who does wheel here. Dont do it.

be scared... Im more scared of high school ingenuity(read: niggerfyin) than anything else..
on thursday of last week, while i was going into a local school to work the snack bar during a volleyball game, i saw a toyota with a lift kit.... the rear u- bolts looked wierd. i took a closer look. the u- on the u-bolt was on TOP of the spring, plate on the bottom. the bolts were not shaped like the factory stuff.. but were designed to go AROUND the tube of the axle, but were on upside down.
happily, it wasnt the school i graduated from. I pointed it out to a student and told him to tell his buddy that it was a dangerous idea... the kid looked, started laughing, and by now, im betting and hoping the kid is too embarrassed to drive his truck at all.
