Just picked up a 93 f350 cc lb 4wd today. 460 is blown and in pieces currently. Transmission is reportedly in good shape. Prior owner says was running great until the block heater bung fell out on the highway and the motor fried.

Given that, I am getting a used motor to drop in tomorrow. Any recommendations on smog legal things to do to add a bit of power before installing the motor? I know this is a speed density motor, and not happy with big cams, etc. Don't know if I can just swap to a MA setup and pass smog or not?

Anyway, what other things would you do to a used motor before installation?

Thanks for your ideas!

Oh yeah, body and interior are in great shape, seat needs recover though.

Did I get hosed paying $650 or is that not too bad?::smokin:

exhaust & intake are the easiest things to do that will get you more power out of a FI 460 beyond that you're not going to get too much without big $$.

Headers of good quality do wonders the ones I've seen recommended repeatedly are doug thorley headers.

$650 is a good price, expecially if you only wanted the front axle, and you part out the rest of the truck to make the axle free. About the only thing I would do to that used motor before you install it would be to do a compressoin test on it to make sure its a sound motor, and replace all gaskets and seals while its out. I have had several "leak free" motors develop leaks after they were installed.

On an EFI 460, the intake and exhaust have a totally different port arrangement as compared to the older carbed 460's, even though the actual bolt spacing is the same. Meaning, you cannot just swap on a better intake, and most headers that are meant for the 84 and lower motors will not work for the EFI 460 engines. You can add a non-retard timing chain set for some added power, and there are a few other things that can be done, but be sure that the port spacing on the EFI 460 engines is very different from the carbed 460 stuff. I know, I experimented with the EFI heads on the 429 in my 71 Mustang.

I am gonna have to do some searching about this as I am kinda new to bbf's and have never heard of this. THanks much.

I would advise it.

On the 460 EFI engines (cylinder heads being E7TE and F3TE) the intake ports are round in shape as compared to an oval on the older carbed heads, and they are about .75" higher on the head. While the top of the EFI head port will nearly match an Edelbrock Torker or Performer intake port, the bottom side is off nearly .75", meaning the manifold port is actually opened to the lifter valley.

On the exhaust side, the EFI ports are nearly round as compared to the carbed head ports being a very tall and narrow oval. Again, EFI the ports are raised and placing Headers meant for a carbed application on the EFI head will result in port misalignment, and a gap of around .25" and a big exhaust leak on each port.

I have a 1990 460efi in my motorhome. I redid the exhaust; new y pipe, moved O2 sensor into the merge for a better sample, 3" from the y to the exit with a 80 series flowmaster. I also replaced the intake system(from the TB to the filter) with a homebrew setup. The difference from just letting it breath was very noticible.

My milage went up and the power was noticible. I can get up the 4lane at a constant 50mph, the same as my toyota.

The EFI motors already have the straight-up timing chain, unlike the carburated smog motors. No more power to be gained there.

I didn't get a "new" one yet, but it should be delivered Friday hopefully. If it comes with the tube, I will get back to you. Price will be shipping plus $2.59.:D
