Hey all,

So I ordered a TBI kit from AFI for my AMC 360 and was looking to mount the computer. Supposedly, the glove box is common... I have an extra computer that I am using for mockup and there is no way that is fitting in the glove box! Where/how did y'all mount this thing? Any suggestions? Anyone have pics?
This is in a 79 CJ7

Thanks,
Joe

i think most put them behind the glove box where the stock cj computer usually resides.

The heater box resides behind the glove box on a stock cj-7 and it resides behind the radio too. Fukin thing is always in the way! And a stock CJ computer??? Um, FAIL. :lmao: Most people try to get it inside the jeep period. Sorry, I don't have an exact location for you. I'd offer my solution for my brothers CJ-5, but I don't think it will help you much! It's behind where the glove box and heater USED TO BE! :D I mostly just wanted to make sure you were scrambling around looking for that pesky stock CJ computer. :shaking:

On mine I used velcro and stuck one side to the computer and the other side to the top of the heater box. Seems to work well for me.

I ended up cutting the glove box (never used it anyways) into more of an L shape. I took the top half, turned it upside down creating a shelf and then used plastic weld to put it back together. Worked out great and the computer basically sits ontop of the glovebox, but at the same height as the top half of the glove box. When you open the glove box it just looks like a half of the opening and the computer is hidden behind the plastic. I can still put the reg and ins papers and other small things inside the glove box and if I still had my stock heater it would all fit the same.

I ditched the heater on mine and mounted a ammo can to the firewall on the passenger side and mounted the computer in there. Used a hole saw in the bottom corner of the can so I could get the plugs in there. Works great and keeps 99% of the water/dirt out.

That sounds interesting - got any pics? email to jpcjguy@hotmail.com.
Thanks!

Where exactly did you squeeze it in? behind the glovebox or to the left of it?

Mine is in a yj but it seems like it was right behind the glovebox.

well, we're both right, and we're both wrong.

i'm wrong about his 79 having a stock ecm (computer). those didn't appear until '80 or '81 irrc. and yes, they were mounted behind the glove box, on top of the heater duct. i have one in my 83. perhaps you're confusing it with the icm (ignition control module) mounted on the driver's side fender? nevertheless, after 80 or 81, cj's did indeed come with an ecm/computer that was mounted on top of the heater duct behind the glove box.

my "FAIL" was not catching the model year of his jeep. his is a 79 so it shouldn't have one. my mistake, i'll own that.

your "FAIL" was stating that cj's didn't have an ecm at all. wrong. wanna own yours?

and here's a pic for ya..

Thanks for the pic. Looks like I am going to yank the glovebox - might try that cutting in half trick that Tomjpeb did - sounds slick.

FAIL Better check your info again, later model CJs had really basic computers mounted behind the glove compartment, as with all YJs and probably TJs if I remember correctly, or maybe that was the fuse panel......

So I ordered a TBI kit from AFI for my AMC 360 and was looking to mount the computer.

I recently installed a DIY setup for a friend with a wiring harness from AFI and mounted the ECM on top of the heater. The problem I had is the AFI harness is set up so that you mount the main power and fuel pump relays inside as well. There just isn't enough room for both relays and the ECM. I ended up re-working the harness so that the relays are mounted on the engine side of the firewall. It was a pain in the ass. Some of the wires going to the injectors/sensors on the throttle body are a bit too long with their harness as well. Those are the shortfalls of a universal harness. Outside of those things I was very happy with the quality of the AFI harness.

The Howell harness on my personal CJ is made for a CJ and only a CJ, so the fit and routing are much cleaner.
