: Range Rover Build

So I decided to take a week off from work to work on my Range Rover to build a roll cage and fix my steering. Its been sitting in my garage and hasn't moved since the last wheeling trip. I've got all the stuff for hydro-assist (been sitting in the garage at least a month) and today all the tube arrived. Sunday a few buddies came over to help and we mostly just removed the roof, windows, and regulators. They did a little bit of work on his cage tie ins as well.

Thought we had all the bolts out...:homer:

My parents were pretty happy about the seven holes I drilled in the driveway for the tube bender:eek:. The reason say seven is because three of the anchors didn't line up so I just reused one and drilled three new holes, overall a great addition to the driveway.

Monday we planned on getting an early start but it ended up being a complete fail day. First the tube didn't arive until one and then I had to drive across town to pick up the chop saw from my friend. I also went and got a couple of heim joints from Independent 4x. By the time that was all done we were pushing four o'clock, but we did however manage to get some stuff done.

Bending the main hoop...

Main hoop set in place bbeing held up by a piece of spare tube.

I also started cutting the base plates as well.

We're going outside to work on it right now so hopefully we should have a lot of stuff done today. I'll post up progress pics tonight.

You should consider using a straight edge to follow your lines with when plasma cutting. You'll get a much cleaner cut the first time, and a lot less grinding time later.

you should also consider putting everything as close together as possible, so you don't waste a ton of steel. that shit gets expensive.

I'll probably just get a bikini top for a Jeep at first until I can afford a custom top.

Its a mixture of stock stuff and PSC stuff, you can read about what I did here. (http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=784235)

What do you use for a straight edge? Do you use something thin or thick such as a block of wood?

Funny you should mention that, I was saying the same thing when I marked that stuff out. The sheet of metal was given to me by one of my friends who used my plasma cutter for the first time on it:shaking:.

Got a good amount of stuff done today, although I have to give all of the credit to my friend Maxx because he is the one with all the tube bending skillz (and the tube bender!).

We're about to go out and work on it some more, but Maxx has to leave around one so I'll probably do some work on the steering then. Speaking of which does anyone has a source for the rubber coupling in the steering shaft? We no longer carry it at the dealership and AB only sells the whole shaft.

I use a piece of aluminum angle or angle iron usually, and a couple clamps to hold it in place. do a couple test cuts to determine your cut offset, then use that when you measure things out. In no time you'll have much cleaner cuts that need just a light flapping, if that.

I've got one on parts car in Cumberland now that I think of it. Doesn't the Disco have the aluminum one that strips out very easily?

Thanks, I would have thought that the plasma would arc off of it. I'll give it a try on the next cut outs.

One other thought, I figured you might know-
can I swap my RRC steering wheel for a DI wheel? I want a smaller wheel, and the Momo conversion is kinda pricey.

I don't know if it will fit, but I think your RRC doesn't have an airbag and the Disco wheel does. I'll ask Drew on Friday.

Got a little more done today. Maxx worked on the "X" over the rear section while I was working on the steering.

We still haven't really come up with any ideas for the C Pillar, so I'm open to suggestions. The C pillar probably won't be tied into the frame, it will just be bolted to the wheel well probably.

No pics of the steering today, I will post some tomorrow.

Looks good so far, but I have 2 suggestions.

1. Re-do the A pillars so they go through the dash, instead of around. It will look cleaner and is a hell of a lot stronger.

2. Mount it to the frame, it's a PITA, but again, it's so much stronger and adds a lot of rigidity to the truck.

cptyarderho
07-15-2009, 01:33 PM
Correct, I have no airbag. Just wondering if the DI can be fabbed a bit to fit, I have looked at the mounting of mine. This wheel feels like driving a school bus.

We will be tying the cage to the frame, Jimmy was saying that if we do a C pillar bar, it would have to go down to the wheel well humps, which would not be continued underneath to the frame.

As for the A pillar bars, I guess we really didn't think about it at the time.
Once this cage is finished being built, and properly tied in, it will be plenty strong.

I'm pretty sure its the fuel pump because I'm getting spark at the dizzy from the coil and I can't hear the pump running. Fortunately I have a couple of spare pumps so maybe I'll throw one on there this week.

I was thinking about using a bikini top for a Jeep since they are pretty cheap. I really only need shade from the sun, I don't plan on wheeling it in the middle of winter.

Thanks. I'm not really the one who is the tube bending expert, my buddy Maxx measured everything out and I did most of the pulling (manual bender). It didn't seem to difficult, he used a couple pieces of scrap bends to mark out where the bend would start. It just takes practice from what I understand, and a roll cage probably isn't the best way to learn unless you have deep pockets.

when i cut my disco, i thought i would definitely fill in the doors in the back to look like a whole body. even started looking for UK 3 door body panels to put in place. but after having the truck cut up the past few years, i really like having the doors. getting stuff from the back is so much easier with just opening the doors.

Update: I got the Rover started for the first time since I chopped it. Turns out that there is a ground for the fuel pump somewhere in the roof. I found the wire, grounded it on the body, and it started right up.

Only problem is that the PSC cooler has a bad weld on it and is puking out fluid...

I'm hoping to have this at least drivable enough to get it on the trailer to take it to Maxx's to work on the cage by next weekend.

I find it odd that you'd cut the roof off, cut the back off (I'm surprised you didn't take the time to unbolt the corner caps , cut and refasten instead of the odd overlap or whatever that is)......and you dont want to cut (anymore) of the fenders?

I'm not sure what wiring the range rover has, but in my disco I got rid of most of the wires running to the back. For the ones I kept, instead of running up the A-pillar I ran the wires along the kick panel, then after the rear doors it goes under the car in a loom to the back.

We didn't plan well enough when making A pillar bars and the plates are right on top of too much shit to put a plate and support underneath. Only can get 3 bolts in. So I am planning on running another piece of tube like so (obviously lower down) to a second plate which is in an area that CAN have a plate underneath so we can tie it to the frame.
It would be directly behind it and not take up foot room like the picture shows. Might also make it an angled bar instead of bent.

I ordered some new stuff for the Rangie that I'm hoping to install in the next week or so.

New Seats...
http://pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=521521&stc=1&d=1273350142

I also ordered a switch pack and wiring harness from !2Voltguy for my e-lockers, so now I don't have to use a 9v battery to engage them:p Unfortunately my front locker actuator motor is bad so I need a new one. I've tried to rebuilt it a couple of times, but it always seems to work intermittently. Anyone know of a good place to get a new or used front e-locker actuator? I checked with the local Toyota dealer and my price through Land Rover is $489. I'd like to spend less than $250 on one.

Sorry about the double posted pics btw.

Spent about 5 hours today on the seat brackets. Had to make them from scratch, and there was a lot of bolting..unbolting..tacking..bolting..unbolting..p ainting...etc... Thus why it took so long.

Drilling out the seats to 1/2"
http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/hs317.snc3/28504_10150186316425618_657390617_12198406_7479317 _n.jpg

initial brackets

tabs welded on
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs317.snc3/28504_10150186316460618_657390617_12198409_640656_ n.jpg

Due to the bulky door panel I couldnt fit a piece of tube running along the floor from the B pillar to the A to allow tabs to be welded on for lap belt mounts. So I drilled a hole in the stock seat bracket and then welded a tab to it for added thickness. If jimmy wants them in double sheer he will have to lose the door panel... But there is no way I can double sheer the other side of the lap belt... I did the same thing on all lap belt mounts.

I picked up the Rangie from Maxx's on friday during my lunch break and drove it up to the dealership. I was fortunate enough to not pass any cops because my inspection sticker is 2 years expired and my tags are also expired.

Today I worked on it for a little while and made the lines for the hydro assist. I kinda guessed on which line went where and happened to get it right the first time. I haven't tried driving it with the locker locked yet so I don't know how much of a difference it will make with the modified Rover pump. I'm thinking that I'll probably end up switching to an aftermarket pump later.

I also put in a new radiator and fan clutch so next on the list is to fix the a/c :flipoff2:

I think the point where the tube joins the chassis rail could profit from a little bracing. The rail is thin and the tube and it´s length will apply considerable force (leverage) should you ever want to investigate under-body-rust without crawling beneath the rig. As it is such a little work involved ..
It should look like the standard outriggers which are welded all the way top-down the vertical face of the chassis.

[EDIT] - hmmm .. could the bracing I am thinking of possibly interfere with the axle´s lower link ? In that case it would be better to drill a big hole at the outer face of the chassis rail so that you could slide a good fitting tube into the tube you already welded on. This would make kind of outrigger á la D90 (those that carry the tub, behind the seats).
