ok, my landcruiser (BJ42, thing) weighs in at 2135 kilograms with 2 people on board, a full tank of fuel and trail spares....

that in lbs is a WHOPPING:
4697

i wish to put it on a diet so as to reduce the number of trail spares im carrying (reduceing breakage) maybe increasing life span of parts......

any ideas?
how much weight did spaceghost save?
any other ideas people have had success with? its already a soft top
im thinking a tubed out FJ45 is not far off, if i cant get this thing under 1600kgs (3500lbs) i need to preserve my toyota axles, as i will soon be running BIGGER meats, and yeah!!

thanks guys!

 holy crap, i thought i had the heaviest cruiser in existence!!

but far far from it...it seems

but you have 44's, 60/70 combo, and all the built gear to handle it!! i am still on puny little toyota axles!! :(

good thing they are pretty well built to start with :D

A 502 bigblock is still lighter than the Toyota 6. My 40 weighs 6100. Loaded & ready for the trail. That's with half-doors & no hardtop. :D

what axles do you run?

Put your passenger on a diet.

I'm 3400 lbs with all fluids and a full 10 gallons of fuel. This is competition trim, no spares just a few recovery tools. I lost around 500 with the blue tip and sawzall.

Get rid of that oil burner and slip a nice little small block in there. That's gotta be 150lbs.

Take it down the beach and dont wash it afterwards. It will gradually get lighter as time goes by.

my dearly departed nuclear lemon weighed in at just over 2 1/2 tons with stock six, 35s, auxilary tank... so i'd be happy were you are

Mine is on a "diet" right now....trail-ready weight was 4400# before, and only 120# heavier at the front side. I've since gone thru my spares, tools, and gear and am working thru what's needed versus not. Also have done some "cleaning"...amazing the amount of "stuff" kept in the frame rails! Bet I dropped 40# just in the rear bumper.

Also doing a new/lighter/simpler cage. Goal when completed is in the 4000# range, trail ready.

Even lost 5# myself.....lol (I'd ask the wife to diet, but she's only 105# right now...plus, I'm not THAT stupid! lol)

Additionally, I'm working on moving some of the weight to drop the CG of the vehicle....air tank below the body rather than on the fenders, etc.

I'll never get mine to comp weight status like SpaceGhost but do want to improve it's trail capabilities while retaining a "bit" of street legality!

between myself and the spotter...ther is only maybe 350 lbs at the most :p

looks like im going the spaceghost...but ill leave a little more tub, and get rid of all the frame behind the seats...i think

interesting, i thought i had the heaviest cruiser, but far from it...it seems :)

rockwells and you are under my weight?

CMAWWWWNNNNN

you got a engine in that thing? 1.3L all alloy 4cyl? ;)

how how how?

rockwells and you are under my weight?

I have no top, doors, windshield frame, spare tire, heaters, winch, spare parts, tools, etc.

Just bare bones...

bj,
dont cut the frame off behind the seats. I dont know about in qld, but in nsw you arent allowed to. I was going to do it to mine. I was told by duncan at macquarie4x4 that you must have at least 2 standard crossmembers and you are only shorten the chassis upto the first crossmember otherwise it comes under individually constructed vehicle. Then there is so much bullshit involved in getting it passed it is nearly impossible!

I broke all those rules anyway! I cut all the crossmembers out and narrowed the chassis so it is nearly straight all the way back. It flares out a little at the transfer then goes straight after that.
Once the body is back on you will never tell the difference anyway!

Off topic here. I rang Marks the other day about the crawler. Still not ready! I want to get one asap so i can position my links and shit. Is it going to be the same size as the overdrive unit? He told me it bolts on in the exactly the same place as the OD. You know anything more about it?
While i was on the phone he worked out my crawl ratio with the tcase gears, crawler and rockwells.......277:1 !! Not to shabby. The old 3b will pull the 48's no problem!! I just need comps to allow tyres over 44's! I dont know why they make that stupid rule. The big michelins are cheaper than 44's!!

BJ On Roids

cool, ok thanks on the crossmember thing, well, i will retain three original crossmembers and one in a factory location, but custom fabbed

with a 4 speed you should have plenty of room to the standard crossmember, the cruiser crawler won't shorten your rear driveshaft....it simply bolts onto that plate with 6 holes, sort of roundish on the top left of the t-case as you look from the back of the car to the front.....

EASY stuff..or so it seems....

i need it!!

cheers
rob

the guy at marks said it was still being tested and it will be out by the end of the year. He didnt seem to keen to give out any info. He just said to me that all the info is on the internet. I said i havent seen it a mate told me about it hoping that i may get some additional info.

Are going to put rockwells under your cruiser?

we are looking at a few things, as i have a set of tyres on the way..... trying to get some reliability out of axles, may get portals from a volvo, if i can get hard info on the strength of them :D

ummmm NEED the rockwell hubs pics for a friend of mine he is gunna run a steering rockwell out back with his 42s, and we NEED the pics....well he has a pretty good idea...but just wants to see what works and stuff

My Fj40 weighs in at 4460 empty. no one in it, soft top, spare tire but nothing else. FYI 2F, stock axles, sm420. I carry at least 1500# more when going on the trail. Cruisers are just heavy.

Some say that Volvo portals are as strong as d60 but with 42" tires and 750 nm of torque you can probably break almost every axel in the market if you want. You got a lot more torque than most of the v8 guys. Volvo portals are quite lite due to the reduction hubs so you will probably save some kilos.

who says this?
where are they?
i was looking at grafting my centres and axles and just adding the portal outers.....
but i may swap the whole lot in.......

awesome info...thanks dude

The car trial guys in Sweden say that. I wouldn't swap the centers because you will probably break the reduction bubs before a LC 3rd member. With reduction hub you only need to have axel shafts and 3rd members that are half as strong to be equal with axls without reduction hubs. They also come with vacuum lockers. I talked to som guys that drove a C303 and they said that it's unusual to break the axels.

awesome info..thanks dude, another question...

what is the most common broken part, or parts, just so i can get an idea of what needs replacing, so i can see if it is available local and cheap and get going doing this conversion, do they blow seals or anything a lot?

know of any webpages that have info?

yes.....the centres are a little bit smaller than the cruiser style ones and they do have vacuum activation adn drum brakes :( but i should be able to convert to discs by making up my own brackets....

so you wouldn't graft them onto cruiser centres, because they are so strong....and because you would break the reduction hubs then? so do the cnetres break? or tha axles? pinions?
