Gents, looking for some ideas to fix.
My 2003 V8 4Runner failed CA Smog test. I had it tested Monday and then brought it back again today (Wednesday) with 70 more miles on it, and it still didnt pass.
The emissions and visual pass. The Continuous monitor tests failed.
I have never disconnected the battery, or had a dead battery (the smog guys asked me if it had).
The smog check computer saw the following for the Continuous Monitor Tests:
Missfilre- COMPLETE
Fuel system- COMPLETE
Comprehensive component- COMPLETE
Catalyst- NOT COMPLETE
Heated catalyst- NOT SUPPORTED
Evaporative System- NOT COMPLETE
Secondary Air System- NOT SUPPORTED
A/C Sys Refrigerant- NOT SUPPORTED
Oxygen Sensor- NOT COMPLETE
Oxygen Sensor Heater- NOT COMPLETE
EGR System- NOT SUPPORTED
I havent tried disconnecting the battery or a reboot of the computer. Any info about how to reboot the computer or things to check before I bring it into the shop?
Thanks for any info. I am an old school Land Cruiser/ Chevy guy and these new Toyotas leave me scratching my head.
cheers!

For the readiness monitor tests, there are a series of driving patterns that must be met/completed before the ECU sets it to complete.
I have the drive patterns for 96-02 model years but can't help you on your 03.
Try searching for "readiness monitor drive patterns"

Have you had any work done on it where someone might have pulled the codes?
If so, they might have cleared the data at the same time, which would have reset all that stuff.
On my '97, it would take several hundred miles for the EVAP code to show up when there was no EVAP hooked up, so obviously some of those tests require quite a bit of driving.

Thanks guys. I will search around for the "readiness monitor drive patterns" .
Noone has worked on the car in almost 4 months. Last time was an oil change.
Both times I took it to the smog shop, it was driven on the same route, for about 15 minutes- about 5 miles from work to the shop. Maybe I should try driving it longer before taking it in?
cheers!

you need to find out what the "drive cycle" is. then follow it to a T and then the monitors will become "ready".
in VA they allow on 03 to have one monitor "not ready" and still pass.
do you have any aftermarket computer crap on the truck?
find someone with access to Alldata, they will be able to print out the detailed "drive cycle" for your vehicle.
they can be very diffucult to follow, but when you do, it will show all of the monitors are "ready"
there are also specific "drive cycles" for each component.
google "drive cycle" and search and search and search..............

excellent info. I will find the "readiness monitor drive patterns" / "drive cycle" info for this truck.
Question- once it is each test completes, will that test stay complete until the battery is disconnected again, or do I have to get the cycles done every trip I take the rig to the smog shop?
I downloaded the info for a Lexus (out of curiosity), and the "drive cycles" are different for each test. So, I assume once you complete a test, you're done for that test, and move on to the drive cycle for the next one. Even if the truck is shut off, the previously passed test will stay complete, and I can work on completing the next one of my choice (they don't have to be completed in an order)?
The Lexus ones did look tricky to do- well, very specific- "soak", drive for 30 miles at 3500 RPM with the gas tank between 1/2 and 3/4 full. then idle for n number of minutes, then drive again at different RPM, etc... Might be worth my time to just have the stealorship or a shop deal with it..
Anyway- this is great info. Research hat on.
cheers!

the monitors will stay "ready" untill the batt is disconnected or the codes are cleared.
if you have a check engine light on, and you have it cleared, all of the monitors will show "not ready".

well, in the interest of time (which I have none of), I took it to the dealor and they cleared the codes and got the computer back on track. I almost tried disconnecting the battery for the night and to try to get it to clear up, but remember that a couple years ago I unplugged it to clear out the "take me to the dealor" light and it didnt work. so I figured I should take it in and have them deal with it- which fortunately worked out.
Anyway, problem solved. I dont know what the issue was though, so nothing to report back to help others who run into this.
Big thanks for the help everyone! Next time I will grab an a scan tool and fix this one myself.
cheers!
