Greetings everyone, I too am eager to become a Scout owner. I owned a K5 for almost 10 yrs and enjoy building it and driving it. I am now looking for a DD/Trail rig but for the moment a DD. I've been looking at this,
1979 International Harvester Scout II

196 CI 4 Cyl - 3 speed manual
Dana 44's Front and Rear - 4x4
CD Player w/ AUX In
Factory Limited Slip Rear Differential
Front and Back Vinyl Bench Seats
Removeable Top - Metal Runs and Drives

Judging from what I've read and from various members comments the 3 speed is not the best option. The price is 1k but its got some rust throughout(which I understand that a 30yr old vehicle is gonna have) When looking for a scout what are some common things to look for with "ISSUES"

Liar. No one is "eager to be a Scout owner." Owning a Scout is one step away from having a buggy, there are few if any "bolt ons" and just about everything is fabbed.

If being eager is wanting to spend multiple years building, then yeah, you're in the right spot.

The only thing most of us around here would keep off of that Scout, would be the basic tub. Even the quarters, hood, and fenders might find their way into the scrap yard.

My ownly reason for getting a scout is because I want a scout. I dont get to watch much TV so dont know anything about any 4x4 shows. I spent most of the time tinkering and building my old blazer so I look forward to a new "adventure" HA Thanks for the heads up on the one I'm lookin at now.

Ya... Since that show this section has had 4 posts:D I think everyone is running out to buy a scout:grinpimp: Just giving you a hard time.

I will say that Ian gave me some good ideas as far as the cage he built goes. I fired him an Email and he was quick to share his bend tech file. Good guy who has brought a lot of respect to the scout name with his show. I hope he does a part 2 in a few years and throws a few steering rocks under it with a LS2. That would bring some respect to the IH name

j/k Yes cool shows, but man people in my area think they are know-alls about scouts because of the 4x4 extreme show and scout 800 build.

Well after patiently looking around I will be getting a Scout next week! 1974 Scout II 345 ci w/auto tranny oh and an A/C system but needs work. Has the usual rust but I'm already on top of that.

Yup he's a good fellow thanks for the heads up. I'm sure I'll be doing lots of business with him in the future. Now begins the journey... I should pick it up around wed and I'll probably drive it straight to the body shop and while waiting for that to finish I'll begin the part hording process. Need to get a new distributor,plugs,wires,oil filter and maybe even a carb rebuild kit. Got alot to do!

No I'm sure Im in the right spot! I'm not lookin for a grocery getter but dont want a huge rust hole leading into the cab either. I'm just getting it buttoned up a little...

Post some pics and some more detailed plans, then we will be able to assist (or flame) you more effectively.
