: So, are solid axles faster in the desert???
1uglyranger 07-20-2009, 02:44 PM Or is Kevin Yoder just that fast?????:p
I heard he won the VORRA/ Fallon race Saturday....by a decent margin too.....
So whats the secret? There are no rock sections in the race....just desert...
Does anyone have lap times, or pics/video??
what class was he entered in? was it an in class or overall win? there's alot of difference between an "in class" with and an "overall" win.
TCARP1 07-20-2009, 05:30 PM It was overall, I belive!
geeride 07-20-2009, 06:30 PM I heard Shannon Harwell won OA, but haven't seen or heard anything official. Yoder runs Sportsman and he did win that. Sportsman runs 5 laps and the pros run 6, I didn't know they could run for overall.
It ain't rock crawling but it sure seemed like it to me when I got high centered on a boulder for about 30 min. in that first canyon.
bob91yj 07-20-2009, 07:45 PM KoH style racing, solid front axle would still be my choice, IFS will take over eventually, too much $$$ for most right now.
True desert racing IFS is the fastest by far. IRS/solid rear axle is a toss up. Generally speaking an IFS/ solid rear axled Trophy Truck takes the overall, but IFS/rear engined IRS Class 1 cars are right with them.
Gunmetalcruz 07-20-2009, 08:25 PM Need to start a new thread. Yoder wins fallon 250. First across the line and won sportsman as well. Leading the points after race 4. He told me he flipped some one over as well. Kevin have your dad post up some vids from your in-car.

So I'm confused... He just won the overall in the 5 lap cars, not the 6 lap cars, correct?
that's what it sounds like.
Bigburlynakedguy 07-21-2009, 09:11 AM It looks like he is also leading points for the series. Not that he could compete with the 1 cars, but is dominating sportsman by enough to win the series.
Billy_Manfroy 07-21-2009, 03:52 PM Is he the cocksucker who decided to play "Let's pin it through two gears up a gravel hill twenty times in a row, and then try it a few times in reverse"
AT 4:00 AM INSIDE OUR PIT/CAMPING AREA? If so, tell him I said he's a fucking douchebag, will ya?
edit: I would have told him myself, but I was busy trying to climb under the front seat in case he landed on our truck when he rolled off the hill like the previous asshole reportedly did before we parked there.
Never mind if it wasn't him

Yes, we won the Sportsman by 30 minutes or so. Yes we were the first too get the checkered flag. But only did 5 laps, Pros do 6. Although we only got passed once all day / night by Sam Berry, who then rolled it 30 miles later, we did stop and help him get back on his wheels. We took off and never saw him again. Getting passed by Sam doesn't break my heart. He had a 40 minute lead on all the Class 1's and Trophy trucks before he rolled. HE IS FAST!
No we can't beat all the class 1's, but I think we beat more than half of them through lap 5.
It's still a rock buggy in the desert. More fun than most will have on a Saturday night though.

Yep that was me. I appoligize for the late night antics. There was quite a large group of people still up that wanted me to play. Wasn't trying to piss people off. Somehow the with quads and buggys that went ripping by our camp 5 minutes before I didnt think it was a big deal. I will buy ya a beer sometime if ya want.

I guess I can't be too upset since you didn't actually roll over on our truck or trailer (with people sleeping in them). And I will definitely take that beer in Hawthorne. Oh, and congrats on the finish.

Not only that, it needs lap times and average speed numbers of the rest of the cars in sportsman. If unlimited sportsman in VORRA is anything like MORE, MDR, BITD etc the class is made up of older Class 1 cars and some pretty trick converted 4 seat prerunners that are probably 10+ mph faster than any solid axle rock crawler. Lets see it (not just the class point totals). :homer:

Good try Rick, but we won't be running in V2R. If and when you can produce some real numbers and pictures of it running on something other than a graded road, we can debate the "are rock crawlers faster in the desert" issue. As always, it should be fun.  :flipoff2:

:laughing::laughing::laughing: thats funny...
Billy_Manfroy 07-27-2009, 04:40 PM Found the results today. According to this, Yoder was never lower than 11th overall and finished his last lap 9th overall. I don't know what they mean by "overall lap position", or how they calculated it, (we started 30th, passed 6-7 cars, and came in 33rd?) but that's still pretty impressive.
http://www.vorra.net/forms/2009F250times
KYODER 07-28-2009, 12:34 PM The overall lap position is based on corrected time. I was 36th to start but corrected time had me in 19th after the first lap. We had two long pit stops for fuel, and some issues on lap 5 with a electrical short( tool bag came loose and landed on battery) that costs us some time. Although we never got out of the car. We stopped to help Sam Berry get the rubber side down. No its not a desert car, but its pretty fast in the rough, and I can pass where others can't.
ON THE RCKS 07-28-2009, 02:53 PM That's insane Kevin. Congrats. I never thought we'd beat a Jeepspeed and a few years later you are keeping pace with the top third of the classes and out driving veteran desert racers...not that you're not plenty experienced, I just never thought this was possible with the cars. Very cool. Makes me want to go run the labor day event.

OK, really twisting my arm...can you tell:D
Should we share pits to help make it work? It's a lap race so I'm not really sure how many pits and all...do you guys know where you get the info? Is the course something we could go pre-run anytime? If so, anyone have the GPS file?

You guys should go! That would be bad ass. The laps should be in the 40-50 mile range. The GPS files come out about 3 days before the race. They will be right on the Vorra web site. We can go prerun on the dirt bikes. Of course I have only prerun once in Yerington. I think we have a good group to help in the pits.
You guys should go race. Lets twist Mellos arm too!
That way Im not the only one in a funny looking desert car.

YAONTO 09-02-2009, 10:57 PM I realized that I wasn't in Hawthorne long enough last week for V2R and didn't get the whole town experience, so I have decided to return this weekend for a longer engagement. However, before committing I did check the weather channel and because it says it will only be in the mid-80's (vs 100+!) I have made arrangements to visit the resident snakes that I hung out with patiently Twittering and waiting for someone to pass by me with roaring engines and dirt flinging tires :p
Look for pics and info next week on all these boys! :smokin:

Me? i'm racing the couch  If i could scrape up an extra $500 i'd be at Vorra just to run with the rock race guy's, but i've got to save for something a lil farther out.
Nope, not back at Izzy's Garage. I think Dad's sick of having his rock/rap music playing, shop cleaning son back home  The car's in my apartment garage that it barely fit's in with the interior torn out of it so I could re route fuel lines, and flush the still mint condition atlas out.

YAONTO 09-05-2009, 08:44 PM The "rock crawlers" are making the mark in VORRA now. Yoders rig went through with no issues through tech and contingency...He has run every VORRA race to date so he was getting people coming up and saying HI. Then came Toms rig and no issues...got a lot of attention for being bigger and different. And then last one up was Jesse who had a big group of on lookers checking out the rig... Pretty cool. at 5pm all the drivers loaded into the rigs and did a parade down the main drag of Hawthorne....
We are all camped out at the start/finish line from V2R Friday night/Saturday morning race. They will be lining up to start at 10am :D Back out to the desert I go :shaking:
RP Films 09-06-2009, 04:56 PM Congrats to Yoder for taking the win in Sportsman class. Tom is currently broken on course...(was his last lap) I think he lost a shock mount....and Jesse is on his last lap. Jesse has had no brakes and his rig caught on fire on his first lap. Jesse and Chris are really getting it!!

JeepRecoveryTeam 09-07-2009, 12:32 PM So let's hear about Tom's crash! :flipoff2:
I blocked my number and called him this morning.
Told him I was Detective Greg Donaldson from the Nevada Highway Patrol calling about an accident involving an unregistered vehicle and a motorhome:flipoff2:
He didn't find the humor.
Sounds like they had a great time, I'm jealous.
Dave
mudtruck44 09-07-2009, 12:36 PM I'm not 100% sure on this, but I heard the rockcrawlers were 1-2-3 in Sportsman!
RP Films 09-07-2009, 01:21 PM I heard a new term used over the weekend....."might be King of the Hammers, but out here they are Queens of the Desert".....
mudtruck44 09-07-2009, 03:46 PM I heard a new term used over the weekend....."might be King of the Hammers, but out here they are Queens of the Desert".....
Who said that? A bitter desert racer that got passed by a rockcrawler?
jeepcrazie 09-07-2009, 03:57 PM Lets keep our heads about us here boys, we will make our presence known here before too long. Actions speak louder than words and with a few adjustments our class will get some respect, just give it some time. Our group of wheelers are one of the more determined class of people I have ever met, and I know with a little bit of time the 4400 group will be puttin the wood down.
Keepen er going,

slvrbck 09-07-2009, 03:58 PM Yeah, and it gave us a place to hang out during our 15 minute pit stops. :D
No joke!! Granola bars and water in the motorhome was definately bitchin'!!
I heard a new term used over the weekend....."might be King of the Hammers, but out here they are Queens of the Desert".....
Yeah, but we finished a desert race in a rock buggy right after putting pretty much the whole buggy back together this week.....how many of the "desert" cars finished??? I sure saw alot of them on the side of the course....:grinpimp: just sayin.....
yield2me 09-07-2009, 04:00 PM Come awn fawkers....PICS!!!!:flipoff2:
slvrbck 09-07-2009, 04:02 PM Who said that? A bitter desert racer that got passed by a rockcrawler?
It definately wasn't the guys we pulled back onto their wheels or the stuck truck in the silt beds...they got passed by a few 2WD desert trucks because they couldn't help....Atlas in 4hi, we got em back right and hauled ass!!
slvrbck 09-07-2009, 04:03 PM Come awn fawkers....PICS!!!!:flipoff2:
That's what I wanna see!! I HOPE somebody got pics of us coming into ProPit riding on a driver rear beadlock with the tire a few miles back!!
yield2me 09-07-2009, 04:03 PM Too bad they will never be called "Queens of the Hammers"!!!:flipoff2:

Yoder said they gave him all kinds of shit when he went to the first race. Now he's killing the guys in Sportsman. I don't think our cars are anything special, or even much faster than a Jeepspeed, but I think we made a pretty respectable showing at the Hawthorne race.
Charlene was at the race taking pics so we'll probably be seeing them pretty soon.
Gunmetalcruz 09-07-2009, 08:26 PM First off Congrads on the win to Kevin!
He has been working on me for months to come out and run Vorra.
Ian Plaine was codriving with me and we showed up friday evening for the race on Sunday. We brought the moto's to pre run with and we got up Saturday am. and got our prerunning done by 11:00am before it warmed up. Saturday afternoon was tech at the El Capitan Casino followed up with a parade thru town. The town made us feel very welcome and people were out waving and stoked for the buisness and excitement.
Fast forward to sunday. Race started for the cars and trucks at 10:00. It was a great course, Start/finish to RM 6 was really rocky and uphill with a few shelfs and short silt ruts sections. I really liked this section. It was a twisty slot car track with allot of rock and berm turns. After cresting the saddle we came down the backside to check point one. Right beore CP1 we had a first long silt section. After clearing CP 1 RM 17 to 22 was the backside "rollarcoaster". Fast 2 track with rolling g outs. Their were some errosion hazards at the botton of most of the g out's. The last two were very square and not getting better thru out the day. RM 27 was BFG Pro Pits and and super fast 2 tracks running next to a cattle paddock with some great shicane's coming into BFG. Were were having a flawless day on tires and our 39 projects never flinched, working perfectly. We ran the powerline section back to RM 55 back to the Main pit. I think we were running about 1 hour 16-18 minute laps on the 55 miles. We had some intercom issues and my helmet quit working coming into lap 2. Ian and I worked on our sign language because I could still here him. I started pushing really hard because we had clean air coming into the first rocky section. We made some low range pass's on stuck cars and boonie crashed on some T/ or sportsman trucks( I don't know the differnce) that didn't like the idea of getting passed. We caught Yoder after check one and he was pulled over diagnosing his noises coming out of the rear end. He pulled back over to let us by. I was frustrated by the lack of comm's and really started to push hard focusing on driving and pushing the lead. The highlight of that lap was coming into the S turn silt section coming out of BFG we ran into it around 65 mph, and we were skimming and skipping across the silt. We ran really hard this lap thru powerline and came in and peeled out heading back out for lap 3. Car was working great, ARB's were working well and my driveline's have never had less vibrations. We did 87.53 mph that lap. Knowing we were in the lead and that Kevin was pitting at CP1 I wanted to get out of main pit fast. So we only took 5 gallons and skipped the bolt check. We took off passing 2 more cars by RM 3. At about Rm 8 the shock hoop tube ripped out ripping thru the hood. Kevin rolled up asking what happen and what we needed and we took off slow after pulling the Co and Ian hanging on to it in his lap. We limped to CP 1 with some stick welding help from Martin Welding. Thanks Guys!
My favorite part was the section before pro pit thru the next silt section. Lap one approaching the we couldn't see for shit so we had to slow down mutiple times. First lap was really hard to see but we passed a fair amount of people, Second lap we were really driving hard seeing endless cars all over the sides of the trail. When we caught Kevin and were really flying in the back. We took a couple really hard hits to the front left. We keep at it, with everything running great.
Nervous about the repair. We drove the back smooth stuff much more chill. Got to RM 40 and the powerline section of the course that was shared with V2R. We nursed it thru the rough and got back to finish second in Sportsman behind Kevin. He was nice enough to pull over making sure we were alright when Ian and I were scratching out heads deciding what are next move was with the coilover.
We were stoked for our first Vorra race. Thanks to my whole pit crew, you guys rocked.
Thanks to:
Ian Plaine for co doging
Jeff,John,Greg for the great pit
Jess Latin for building me a great motor that just rips.

congrats on the 2nd place finish.

Gunmetalcruz 09-07-2009, 09:25 PM Thanks Wayne
Huss666 09-08-2009, 09:46 AM Sick race. After pitting for Tom this weekend i realized how fun this class is and suggest that everyone who likes to go fast in their rig compete. You would be racing against the some of the most respectable people in our sport, the brotherhood of the rockracers was clear that we were all there to see eachother to the finish line. Our pitcrew all raced over to put out Jesse's small fire and did everything we could to get him back on the course(eventhough he left me hangin at milemarker 8 in need of oil for my dirtbike which had a hole in side of the motor:shaking:, that was a long hike back...) It's all good i'm not the type to feel lotsa feelings, i'll save it for next time we race against eachother:flipoff2:.
Tom said this type of racing is much easier on the car than any of the other vandalizing we put our junk through. I think he was bullshitting me to get me to race next time and it worked:flipoff2: Can't wait to get out there with you guys on the next one!
Great race gentlemen, you guys were gettin it!
mudtruck44 09-08-2009, 01:00 PM Our pitcrew all raced over to put out Jesse's small fire and did everything we could to get him back on the course(eventhough he left me hangin at milemarker 8 in need of oil for my dirtbike which had a hole in side of the motor:shaking:, that was a long hike back...) Greg, I feel really bad about that now. I'm sorry man. By the time we got to that point in the race I guess I wasn't thinking straight and the thought of getting back out of the car, taking the spare off, and getting oil out of the tool bag sounded like a lot of work. I don't know what to say, but I'm sorry for leaving you out there.
Huss666 09-08-2009, 02:25 PM It's all good, just gotta give you shit:flipoff2:
What you doin burying oil on ur rig anyway? Gotta make that shit accessible to ur pitcrew or even to urself if you go upside down!
Glad you guys didn't burn down in that little flame, its little shit like oil on the exhaust that can really cost you in the end. I like the idea of running all of the breathers to a catchcan then out the back of the car. Might create an oil slick for your competition:D

Bad thing is, it created an oil slick in the floorboard for me. After the 2 fires, I realized my left shoe is melted on the outside and there is about a 6 inch square patch of my firesuit that is black!!!:shaking:

The location of our tools and stuff was something we were still working on Saturday morning. I have some room for fluid containers so that is something I definitely have to do instead of having that shit buried in the tool box. I also need to do something about the oil fill for the motor. It takes about 5 minutes to get oil in it the way it is. That definitely needs to be addressed!
Huss666 09-08-2009, 06:01 PM I'm no saint, i have the same issue you had with it taking 2hours to get the firewall out. Jesse what was ur top speed?
COMPLAINE 09-08-2009, 07:47 PM We NEED more rigs to show up at these events and it will be so much fun!
It was great racing Kevin and Jess out there, but to be honest i had no idea who else was "sportsman." But on that same note I knew when we were ahead of Kevin that we were in first place :flipoff2:
To sum the race up;
-Driving 2 feet off of someones ass so that the silt doesnt have time to rise to eye level is like waterskiing beind a dragboat on a ten foot rope that your HANDCUFFED to. :headbangingslayer:
-passing desert cars through rocky washouts in 4 lo because they cant get around a stuck guy, lauging.
-87mph in the king of body roll. Getting it!
In all seriousness Tom Wayes drove the crap out of his car and was on point the whole race. We didnt get passed by a single person until we broke, and then once on coarse we didnt get passed even when babying 3/4 lap to the finish. We drove to win and the look on peoples faces each lap was priceless when we went flying by them at 70mph. you could almost see the thoughts in their head, they were part impressed, part curious and part scared.
Ian
mudtruck44 09-08-2009, 08:10 PM I'm no saint, i have the same issue you had with it taking 2hours to get the firewall out. Jesse what was ur top speed?
I just recently cut my firewall in to a bunch of pieces so it comes out in sections. When I first built it, it was one piece. Now it is 7! Before this race I re-did a bunch of stuff to make it easier to work on, and to re-routed the mess of hoses and wiring I had going everywhere.
Our top speed was 75.12. Coincidently that happened while we were flying through the air.:smokin: On lap 2, on the long straightaway with the big rollers I pinned it as we got to one of the big ones. The motor had a lot more on those straightaways, but the car just didn't feel good at that speed. We hit 70 a handful of times, and 60 felt fine, but if you touched the steering above 70 it was sketchy. Yoder said the same thing. They said thier top speed was 78. I don't know if Tom's car actually felt better at high speed, or if he even knows the difference between things feeling good or bad. :D If his did feel better I wonder if it was because of the tires? Tom, I asked you after the race if you were going as fast as possible out there and everyone laughed like I was an idiot, but seriously, was 87mph all the car had or did you back off because the way it was handling?
slvrbck 09-08-2009, 08:45 PM Our top speed was 75.12. Coincidently that happened while we were flying through the air.:smokin: On lap 2, on the long straightaway with the big rollers I pinned it as we got to one of the big ones.
After we hit that section on the first lap, I remembered Tom saying the night before that it was really bitchin'! I was soooooo looking forward to that section on lap 2, I knew we were going to get some good air. Unfortunately, we only got to hit it 3 of the 4 laps because of the flat on lap 3 around that section.
Gunmetalcruz 09-08-2009, 09:32 PM Ian, good to see you back on the board:laughing:
Jess if I had more flow in the pump at lower rpm's I think the motor has more their to go faster. The steering is just much better when I am spooled up in 2nd. I really think the bfg's with the square profile track amazing. Just to go on the record. I like silt beds.
KYODER 09-08-2009, 09:34 PM The race was a blast. To bad my car had the problems it did. It would have been fun to go door to door with Tom. Although we both would have crashed hard. Track was fun. We only got to drive the first lap hard because of the problems we had. My car was loose on the smooth sections. The steering just gets too sketchy above 70-75. We did our top speeds in those small whoops. You know the first five miles of the 15 mile whoop section. My car drives better in he rough than on the smooth roads. Not sure why. We had the finish in site when the tranny quit. Less than a half mile. The car stopped for a bit then third was the only working gear with something locking up. Thought it was the Transfer case that was banging for 150 miles, after we crossed the finish line on the way to the pit which was maybe a 100 yards. It gave up the ghost and the rear end quite all together and then the tranny was completly toasted. Not sure what happened there it never saw more than 180 degrees.
Damage found so far
Turbo 400 is done
Rear dana 60 ring and pinion and ARB
Front sway bar arm stripped out then bent the link
radios and intercom sucked balls
Steering would take a half turn to get tires to move at all some times. I could feel it bypassing in orbital
car over heated and had to back off throttle.
Im sure my list will be longer that is only what I have looked at so far.
It ws a good thing it was a rough course, it knocked almost all of the racers out of the race. I think less than 30% finished.
So we need more rock guys to come out and play. It is off the hook fun. I know Tom is hooked now.
66CJdean 09-08-2009, 09:40 PM It was fun racing out there with you guys. Tom was so Getting It when he flew past us there at Vis A. So look forward to Yerrington next Memorial Day. There is a section out there we hit 92 on and all I can say is suck the seat cover up your ass and hope for the best at that speed! I expect that there will be quite a few Trophy crawlers there next year and we will have enough to make a class. This will make the ones bitching somewhat happy. They went from so talking shit about racing a rock crawler to totally bitching about them. Rock crawlers are moving in....There goes the neighborhood:flipoff2:
Lil' Rich 09-08-2009, 09:48 PM I'm gonna try and come out for races that I am not holding events on... I love the VORRA Race tracks and have been on every inch of each the tracks they set up. Should be a TON of fun...
mudtruck44 09-08-2009, 09:50 PM Ian, good to see you back on the board:laughing:

So when you were going almost 90 that was in 2nd? Maybe you should go with some lower axle gears?
YAONTO 09-08-2009, 10:22 PM Yes, I have pictures...and I will have them up soon. Yesterday was spent trying to get from Holy Hell Hawthorne back to the Bay Area...and today was spent getting from SFO to the beaches of Maui :flipoff2: You should see my new office view :p
The race this weekend was awesome. I was so glad to see all the guys out there makin it happen! As always, the will to finish exceeded all expectations of those desert racer guys. They are certainly taking notice, and the VORRA guys are excited to see more come out too!
Congrats to Yoder for the win!

Danger Ranger 09-09-2009, 10:41 AM So we need more rock guys to come out and play. It is off the hook fun. I know Tom is hooked now.
My rig is already being torn apart... we'll see how much I can afford on the rig re-vamp. Anyhow I'm hoping to do the Vorra series next year... seems the most plausible in respect to where I live and what I can't afford already

The VORRA races i've been to are a blast! it's laid back, entry's are cheap, and they're definatly close.
really wish i could have gotten all my parts in time to go to hawthorne, but the car's still 60% torn down right now.
geeride 09-09-2009, 06:54 PM Congrats on another win Yoder!

With that said....BRING IT! :flipoff2: We're not afraid!
Even with the mishap (rock crawler 321 driving into our camp).
This was taken from the VORRA website, just curious as to what happened.
I think its cool all you guys are coming to the races so there will be more of you guys to hopefully give me a push when I get stuck!

Yeah, seems your hard pressed to find a 2wd buggy/truck to stop in a silt bed and lend a hand....that happened to us on 2 occasions that day. The guys that were on their side were grinning ear to ear when they saw us hauling ass up the bed!!
YAONTO 09-10-2009, 09:01 AM So I checked out the pictures yesterday...and it looks like it was a flat fast desert race :shaking: I was stuck at Pit 1 all day and tried to walk around to different spots, but there wasn't anything too interesting to create a good action shot. Nothing tooooo exciting, but I did get a lot of contingency, pits and finish line pics too.
I have uploaded them all to www.charlenebower.smugmug.com who knows, you may think something looks better than I do
YAONTO 09-10-2009, 09:03 AM Here is a preview...some of the ones that I like...

The poor guy was just done in the middle of the trail...not smooshed, had a heart attack.
I can hear his thoughts now... "hmmm the roar, wonder what that is, I'm gonna go check it out" the earth starts to move...and shake... "Holy S**t" and his little heart stops and the earth hits so hard that it flips his body into the air landing on his back to be covered in silt dust until the food chain comes to acquire him.
The good news is that is the only animal I saw all day :D
Bigburlynakedguy 09-10-2009, 02:04 PM We saw a lot of rabbits late Friday night. They were caught in the glare of 8 Hid's! There were some cows that we had to stop for as well!

Hey! That's me waving at you!! Our GPS topped out at only 62mph before the summit on the first section, but this picture was taken after the three link failed and the rear end was being located by the uber-awesome tire-to-frame panhard system we were enjoying. Sam Berri lapped us right there at about a million mph and we were terrified someone was going to cream us in the dust we were throwing.
See everyone at Prairie City!
Billy
66CJdean 09-10-2009, 05:33 PM Oh there has been plenty but I would say it is form those who bitch about everything anyway. Glad to here it isn't everyone just the poor little :rainbow: bitches.

66CJdean 09-10-2009, 07:23 PM I am sure Yoder and Joel will be there for both. Not sure about the rock buggies though.
I have a few photos of the race I would like to post weho can host them?
slvrbck 09-10-2009, 08:01 PM Paging Jesse for short course racing.....
We talked about it the other day....guess we will see if time/other commitments allow it!
I will probably be there either way.
