ya i know search but i want to know if anyone has run a welded front end and then switch to a detrot locker in the front and if it is just as hard to turn with the hubs locked and in 2wheel drive with the locker vs the welded front... I have my front welded right now and its ok to turn but I thought that in 2wheel drive it would be a lot easyer that in 4wheel drive but it seems the same i just want a comp. I am running twin sticks thats why I ask... I still have to get out and unlock one hub with the welded third to make sharp turns will the locker be the same....

I'm locked up front and as long as no torque is applied, it's 99% transparent.

I can drive with the hubs locked in 2wd and -I- can tell it's there, but if -you- got in and drove my rig like that, you probably couldn't tell at all..... Almost zero drag...

Gotta loooove twin stick. :flipoff2:

I broke my front detroit, so to get me through the last run of the winter last season, I welded up an open carrier a lot like the Colorado K-5/14 bolt guys do. It sucked, I hated it. Even with the twin stick and running in rear 2-low it wouldnt turn due to the axles still locked together. I already bought my new detroit for the front.:D

Thanks that was what i was looking for i just wanted to make sure it was worth puting the detroit in the front...

Arb's are over rated I've seen too many failers of a hose or seal. And I've also seen roll overs for forgetting to engage or from the above mentioned failures, didn't know it wasn't working until it didn't. Go detroit works every time.

With a welded front or a spool in front, you would want to be sure that the U joints on each side are "in phase" or this might might produce problems with the outer shafts wanting to center.

The situation is exactly like a drive shaft. When the angle of the joint is greater than zero (like when turning) the rotational velocity of the driven end is not constant, but accelerates and decelerates twice for each rotation. The amount of acceleration/deceleration increases with the angle.

When the shafts are in phase, the acceleration/deceleration is equal and opposite sign of the two sides. If the two sides are fighting each other, it will tend to pull the wheel to center.

You won’t have this problem with a locker, since the faster wheel can ratchet.

This question comes up every week. Search and you will find the answers.

And OF COURSE its going to be hard as fuck to turn, think about it. The axles are WELDED together. :shaking:
