: Let's talk about Chronographs
Keith Strong 07-21-2009, 07:29 AM I have some Cabelas gift cards and I want/need a Chrono. What are you using and why? I am looking for easy to use, portable (maybe a case?) and cost effective. Essentially looking for the balance of features vs ease of use. Which do you have and what do you like and dislike about it?
Chris 07-21-2009, 07:41 AM Pro Chrono digital. $100 and it does what you need unless what you need is a wired printout and a printer.
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0004513221339a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=chronograph&sort=all&Go.y=0&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&Go.x=0&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1
All that is going to run you another $100 and then you want the CED m2, but Cabelas won't have it.

The Pro chrono is easy to use and set up. There is nothing I really dislike about it, I would like a wired read out but it's not really needed.
Oh and try not to shoot it. :D

The ProChrono is the one you want. It reads consistently in nearly any lighting condition. The only cheaper alternatives are the Shooting Chronys, and two of the guys who owned one switched to a ProChrono when mine will read correctly on days when the Chrony's are being... twitchy.
Everthing else in the price range of the ProChrono is either a PITA to get warrantied (Never buy anything from PACT, whether it's a chrony or timer)
The only thing that will read when a ProChrono won't is the CED M2 (at double the price) and they're breakage-prone from what I've seen firsthand. Never had to do anything to my ProChrono but set it up and shoot.
Very happy with it.

What's your beef with PACT? I've had a PACT mod 1 chronograph and club timer since the late 80's and have never had any trouble with them. I still see as many of their timers at matches as anyone elses. I've never had to test their warranty but their customer service has always been good. When I loaded a lot of shotshells, I occassionally put a pellet or two into the screens and had to buy a few. I was always glad I wasn't shooting at the whole unit.
TNToy 07-21-2009, 09:39 AM The timers and chronographs work just fine (although I prefer the ProChrono)... But the one guy I know personally, and the half-dozen on BE who have also sent something in... weren't so impressed with their service.
Let's just say it reminded me of a USA6X6 thread.
aloharover 07-21-2009, 10:05 AM I am happy with my ProChrono. Reasonably priced.
I got the USB data cable but havent had time to actually attach it to my netbook and se ewhats up
Keith Strong 07-21-2009, 03:00 PM Thanks for all the replies. TNT, is the tripod your pics just a camera one or is it a chrono accessory?

looks like a cheapo tripod to me. Best buy has a decent one for $50.

TNToy 07-21-2009, 06:20 PM I'm using a $25 tripod from Target. Works great, although I'll throw a box of ammo or something on the spreader/brace bar down low if it's a really windy day.
wyliecaver 07-21-2009, 09:22 PM I have had an older model CED Millennium Chronograph for about 5 years and have no complaints. Have not used any other chronograph so I can't compare to others but I can tell you what I like.
1. USB port on the unit for downloading data (mine has a serial port I bought a converter for but newer ones appear to have a USB)
2. Display is very large and sits up on the bench with me. Can be read through a spotting scope when set up for downrange velocity.
3. Buttons are also up at the bench with me so I can clear bad data out of strings or review as I go.
4. Screen openings are larger then most others I have seen at the range.
I have only seen one other Millennium at the local range so I'm not sure how popular they are. At the time I bought mine I got it directly from CED.
Keith Strong 07-22-2009, 06:31 AM So help me out here, why wouldnt I want a remote setup? Something like this?
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_221339&id=0005823222713a
The range I frequent the most is very structured, etc. I cant just be walkin down range whenever I feel like it and the cease fires are only like every 30-40 minutes. Seems like having a remote would be a benefit for me?
Fisheadgib 07-22-2009, 06:40 AM There's no good reason not to have a remote unit. The only reason for a self contained unit is that it's a little cheaper.

Remember what I said about the _____ Shooting Chrony's being the most tempermental, and really only liking very specific lighting conditions? ;)
I usually shoot pistols through mine. Even when I shoot rifles, I do it from 20 feet away, and I WRITE DOWN the data as every shot is fired.
I started that when I accidentally grabbed the chrono by the "clear string" button while putting it away. I lost the data from three different loads I'd cooked up *just* for that range session.
I've seen guys lose 150+ rounds worth of data when the chrono got shot / fell over / suddenly fried / PC locked up while connected to it. I'm very old-fashioned when it comes to "storing" chrono data. Pen and paper always works... So I've never been too hung up on a remote display.
Keith Strong 07-22-2009, 09:14 AM I totally agree! But I think you made my point. If my chrono is downrange and I can't access it for 20 or 30 plus minutes, wouldn't it be a large benefit to have the display and controls on the bench with me?
Chris 07-22-2009, 09:18 AM I totally agree! But I think you made my point. If my chrono is downrange and I can't access it for 20 or 30 plus minutes, wouldn't it be a large benefit to have the display and controls on the bench with me?
Yes. Keep in mind that the control wire will only be 25 feet or so, which should be all you need.
TNToy 07-22-2009, 10:43 AM Like he said, the remotes are ususally 15-20 feet in cord length. I have 20/15 vision with contacts in... So I have zero issue reading the screen on my unit at that distance. Numbers are pretty big.
Keith Strong 07-22-2009, 11:18 AM Alright cool. I have 20/15 as well thanks to LASIK :grinpimp: so it sounds like I will be ok. Do you guys have a case for it or just toss it around?

me,too.
Keith Strong 08-30-2009, 09:54 PM So I bought the ProChrono Pal. Figured what the hell save the money. I was right, and now I wish I had spent more for the the remote :( It works perfect. I have no complaints, does exactly what I need it to do. However, at my range they only do cease fires every 30 minutes. Testing the FPS on 6 different loads became a chore. I was done firing rounds in 10 minutes, and then sat around waiting for the next cease fire to get my averages, etc. Oh well, not a big deal, but I wish I had got the model that takes the remote.
TNToy 08-31-2009, 08:31 AM ...And the collective wisdom of the OSR forum talks yet another person into buying something other than what they reall want/need. :flipoff2:
I do all the power-factor/average/std deviation crap with an... um... calculator. :shaking: :p

:flipoff2: Oh so true!
TNToy 09-01-2009, 05:14 AM Well, that's all fine and dandy if you write down every shot.:mr-t:
Like I said earlier, I think everyone should always write down each shot as it's fired. Batteries die, electronics go haywire, operators accidentally hit 'clear', and chronos get shot.
I've never lost three hours worth of work this way. ;)

And I've never shot my chrono.:p
300sniper 09-01-2009, 06:29 AM i rarely shoot over a chorny at the range. it is a pain in the ass to set up. when there is a cease fire i can go set it up on the tripod and align it as best as i can for height and side to side alignment with my target. i can't touch my rifle to make sure it is in the correct spot until the cease fire is over. at that point either it is aligned correctly or not. most likely not. then i have to wait for 15 minutes until the next cease fire to adjust it. hopefully it is set up correctly the second time but not always. i usually just go out in the forest to chrony so i can do it at my leisure.
i have a "shooting chrony" and it sucks. i get more error readings than velocities.
