: New .243 (for me anyway)
Protecsafari 07-21-2009, 03:04 PM Remington stainless Model 7, with HS Precision grey stock, Leupold 3-9X silver.
Like new.
Now I have to try it out, see how it compares to my 600, and decide which one I'll keep. I actually like the little 600, but would like a stock upgrade.
Did Leupold make a 3-9X rimfire with AO in silver? I'd like to have an AO scope on this Model 7 if I keep it.
I didn't buy it to keep it, but might, I got it for $500.
Protecsafari 07-21-2009, 06:29 PM I checked GB and Gunsamerica, none like it for sale.
Dunno what model # this is, or if it was a limited run. Prev owner got it new, said it came with the light grey splatter paint job stock. Barrel looks to be lighter weight.
I'll snap pics tomorrow.
I know the prev owner, suspect this rig has had no more than 2 boxes of factory through it, maybe not even a box (he's lefty, the gun righty, he most probably won it at some hunting related competition).

Protecsafari 07-21-2009, 07:33 PM Thanks, but the model I bought is not listed there.
I wish it had the predator barrel :(
It has an HS precision stock, not the regular injection molded solid plastic like many Model 7 variants have.
I'm gonna run it head to head with my 600 and see which does best.
Pt_Ranger_V8 07-22-2009, 08:53 AM the model seven is a sweet little gun.
I have one with a you stock in .243. The shorter stock makes it a little akward to shoot at first, but after you get used to it, it becomes an invaluable truck/atv/snowmobile gun :grinpimp: It's dead nuts accurate as well
Protecsafari 07-22-2009, 08:58 AM Thanks! :)
I usually miss out on deals.
Bought it to flip, but might keep it.
Off to pick it up right now!
(raining, so range time a no go for now).
Pics in a few!
Protecsafari 07-22-2009, 11:06 PM Trigger was light, prev owner "adjusted" it. All he did was back spring pressure off too much- on safe you could pull the trigger, let off, then flip the safety and it'd trip.
Some people shouldn't own screwdrivers.
It's a decent trigger, safe now too, could stone parts and change springs and make it really good, but it's a little lighter than my 600's, which is 36 oz.
Scope was not zeroed, so I fired a few at 25 to get it lined up. Hope to try it at 100 tomorrow.
Kinda cool, having two little .243's.
Wish it had a heavier bbl though, as the HS stock and light bbl make for some decent gun movement at the shot (maybe more than my 600).

Protecsafari 07-23-2009, 07:08 AM Been out of varminting a while, no more ADL..........seems they now have a stainless replacement, with 24" instead of 22" bbl.
For a walking varmint rifle I think an SPS to better fit my needs. Yeah the stock is cheap, but I can make it work.
I'm gonna shoot my shorties until they sell, zero the model 7 today.
Bought it to flip, but might keep it.
I'm just glad it's not a .260 or I'd have to offer you $$$ I don't really have for it :laughing::laughing:
SilverZuk 07-23-2009, 10:57 AM I've always wanted a model seven in 243.
Protecsafari 07-23-2009, 02:26 PM Yeah SZ, it is a cool gun.
I'd like to keep it, but don't need three .243's!
Now for some opinion.................I'm getting the SPS and am thinking of gunkoting the metal olive green- action/bbl and floorplate(even the bases and rings) then putting a matte 4-12X AO Leupold.
Anybody got a pic of such a color combination?
I could pimp it, with that dark purple (instead of olive), just to be silly.
Protecsafari 07-25-2009, 05:07 PM Finally got around to shooting the Model 7.
Kinda breezy, had some of my dad's handloads (75gr Speer HP on some 4895, FL sized).
They went 3 under an inch (.75 C2C).
Prone, off bipods, non AO scope of only 9X..........not the best system, maybe capable of better accuracy than I could get- prefer 12X and a bench for load testing at 100.
Definitely usable. I tried a few left over 70gr Nosler BT loads on max charges of 4350. They were high and right of the others, but I got it set with them, an inch high (no real group shot, only had a couple left, walked it in after first two were touching-dunno if that first two touching was fluke or not).
My daughter informed me over the weekend she wants to take up deer hunting. I hated you for this find before, now I REALLY hate you :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:
Protecsafari 08-03-2009, 06:02 PM Pile on the hate, I sold it for $700.
Have you looked at a Remington 600?
IIRC Ramline sells a replacement synth stock for at or under $100 that can have 1" taken off (you'll have to sand pad for proper fit but the stock will accept shortening).
I dislike the Ramline stocks, would rather go through the hassle of retrofitting a Model 7 Rynite or order a Richard's Microfit in royal camo laminate.
My old lady doesn't shoot much, is 5' 4" and weights 105. She shot the 600, with just a T shirt on her collarbone, prone of bipods.......stock having just the factory buttplate. She thought it no big deal and put them 1" high at 100, which is where it was zeroed.
And she hadn't shot a rifle but twice (two rounds) in the last 5 years.
So if she can handle a 600 .243, your kid might be able to.
A decent metal but crappy stock 600 goes for around 300 here. I pad $350 for mine, with some junk Bushnell on it (which i gave away).
Pile on the hate, I sold it for $700.
Still a nice deal, actually. As for my daughter, we haven't really began to shop rifles at all. They had one of those H&R single shots at Gander Mountain the other day & I had her pick it up and try to handle it. She's not ready. She'll be 9 in a couple months & hasn't even shot a BB gun yet. So, that's the next step, then Cricket .22, and then a rifle for deer maybe around the time she turns 11. Just need to start setting some cash aside so I'm ready if I stumble into a deal like yours :smokin:
Protecsafari 08-04-2009, 09:04 AM I made a few bucks on it, and somebody saved a few in the process, so at $700, yeah, I thought it was a decent deal for both seller and buyer.
I could have tried for more, but I saw no reason. I did good enough.
On the Cricket: wish the Cricket had a knurled cocking knob (like my old Chipmunk) rather than plastic.
A bud bought one, polished up the trigger on it Sat. Helped a bunch but it was still kinda cheap feeling. The thumbhole stock was pretty cool :)
The .243 with varmint bullets has some recoil, in fact the Model 7 kicked a little more than my 600, due to lighter weight. But with the recoil pad it didn't clip the shoulder like the 600 does once in a while. The Model 7 moved more, but was more comfortable.
A 600 with a recoil pad, maybe a heavier laminated stock.........might be the better choice. Not for kids offhand, but for bag or bipod work.
So far my 11 yr old (small sized) is maxed out rifle wise at the .223 in AR platform. She just needs to get used to that for a while, then she can move up to the .243.
Odd, I was a midget when a kid, and by her age was blasting M1 Garands and anything else my dad and his buds shoved my way. They thought it funny, I thought it fun.
My girl's tall for her age (will be 9 at the end of September & is 4'3" now), but thin. Still way too small to hold a full-size rifle, even with a traditional youth stock IMO. I need to talk to my mom's cousin about a .22. He is a full-on gun nut & used to make 'em from scratch. He had this little .22 that was based on some obscure Winchester from about 100 years ago. Single shot, bolt action with a cocking knob on the back of the bolt - and the trigger was on TOP of the stock (squeeze with your thumb). He put maple stocks on 'em and they were very, very light. Would make a great coon huntin' gun :grinpimp: I always wanted one - maybe I can talk him into making a couple for my girls :)
