: August FOTR work weekend
navy-jeepster 07-21-2009, 09:28 PM August 22 - 23 work weekend will be here soon.
We are in the planning stages now for projects for this weekend.
Email me at todd.n.larisa at comcast.net to signup.
Looking to have about 50 people for the projects planned.
As we get closer and we have something in concrete for plans, I will post those here.
It will be from the Loon Lake, Wentworth side of the trail for planning purposes.
Camping at Airport Flat or on the trail depending on the projects.
Thanks
Todd
Brothergrim 07-22-2009, 08:48 AM Sounds good. I will pencil this in and spread the word within NorCal4Wheelers. See if I can get a group to come up for the weekend.:smokin:

Thanks for signing up.
Signup sheet is up via Del's web page.
The same email address is above.
With the issues surrounding Little Sluice, we will work the by-pass to make any repairs needed there.
Other ideas for work areas?
Thanks
Todd
cruzila 07-28-2009, 12:22 PM Todd, I have given you my opinion. Time is ticking.

You are not alone.
Todd, I posted it through the group but just in case. I will be attending with my two kids (9 & 11).

randii 08-09-2009, 11:52 PM Back to the top -- we really need good involvement on this weekend, there is MUCH to do and little time in which to do it!
We'll need trailers, roto-hammers, and concrete tools -- if you can attend, please fill out Del's form, or email/pm Todd if the form doesn't work.
We need a good-sized crew to make this happen -- we'll be staging at Ellis Creek but working as far in as Thousand Dollar Hill (just east of Little Sluice).

Did not see a form, but it does list Todd's e-mail addr. Edit... Reading a bit more, looks like Del got rid of the form and you just sign up via the e-mail address link.
navy-jeepster 08-11-2009, 01:46 PM I think Del did get rid of it, as those that use the online version of Hotmail or MSN mail could no use it.
Still looking for more people to sign up.
At the present time, we are looking at moving base camp back to Airport Flats.
Working on Water bars along the trail as far in as possible, and other high impact points along the trail.
Send me an email at todd.n.larisa@comcast.net to sign up.

bagman 08-11-2009, 09:49 PM With less than two weeks two go what is exactly planned? Where will work be taking place?
cruzila 08-11-2009, 09:53 PM What is needed is a commitment from people to be there. The plan that we had is in jeopardy because of slow sign ups.
There is plenty of work to be done, but without manpower, it will be daunting.
navy-jeepster 08-13-2009, 08:10 AM I have changed the plans a little bit after not having the full approval that was needed to complete all the work at Little Sluice.
We will be working on the following.
Photo crew to document Little Sluice.
Wentworth Springs crew to paint and clean up the kiosk here. they will also install wag bag and used oil spill kit recepticles. These directly relate to water quality across the whole trail as we have a place to dispose of these used items when coming off the trail now.
Trail marker crew.
Rolling sign crew.
Food crew.
We are still in the need of volunteers to assist with this weekend though, so please give us a little bit of your time, and we will feed you.
We scaled back a little to make sure we were successful on this weekend, because failure is never an option. We have to make sure the plan matches what we are able to do on any given weekend, with the crew that we get.
That is what we have done for this weekend.
This plan has evolved with work from my fellow FOTR leads group, and a big thanks to all of them for keeping me focused on the weekend and the work at hand.
Please signup and come up and help us on the trail.
Todd
Edit... I have changed the plans a little bit after not having the full approval that was needed to complete all the work at Little Sluice.
Todd
Edit...
BTW, FOTR put out requests in the last month for volunteers to help fix the damaged LS bypass (yes, it needs maintenance once every five years or so) and got 10 volunteers, not enough to get the job done. Where are all the vendors and protestors ready to go to work to fix the problem? You want to keep LS as it is? Sign up to haul concrete, drill and tie rebar, and repair the darn thing.
I saw John's post elsewhere, hope he does not mind me posting it over here. But this is the last scheduled work detail of the year when looking at the FOTR website.
There is a new addition for National Public Lands day September 26th, and to meet Water board requirements we need a huge turn out on both of these weekends.
Please everyone who is able bodied and has the time, sign up for this August work day.!!!!!

There is another workday on the 26th? I just traded working one weekend in Sept for another weekend that happens to be the 26th:shaking: I can trade for a different one but have to do quick before the ink drys lol
Did not see anything here http://www.publiclandsday.org/

We need to get DOT/ROC approval first. It will be posted there soon :-)
PS August is more important right now....so keep your dates :-)
navy-jeepster 08-13-2009, 09:10 PM We all love the trail, and even if you do not have a rig that is able to run the trail, still come up and help.
We will get you a ride into the areas that we need to work.
Plenty of work for everyone.
Todd
bagman 08-13-2009, 09:12 PM I may be there, it really depends on work. Like every trip up for me it could change on Friday afternoon with one phone call. :(
navy-jeepster 08-13-2009, 09:33 PM Mike
Thanks, and appreciate the info.
I can PM you my cell number if you like, and you can call me on Friday if you can make it or not.
I will be running late getting up that way too.
Todd
chasinternet 08-14-2009, 10:53 AM Who is requesting Little Sluice be photo documented?
randii 08-14-2009, 11:23 AM Who is requesting Little Sluice be photo documented?
Don't worry. (http://zapatopi.net/afdb/)
That was worded not that well... whatis being photo-documented is the exact condition of the east end of the Little Sluice Short Bypass, where concrete was installed by FOTR in 2003. It is crumbling and needs repair -- these pictures are to document the 'Before' condition to help plan the repair, and to compare against later when we have 'After' pictures.
Randii (no foil)
Keith 08-14-2009, 11:31 AM http://zapatopi.net/afdb/afdbhead.jpgThat's an awesome setup. I need one for Saturday
ROTFLMAO.
FWIW. They take pictures to get "credit" for trail work done.
chasinternet 08-14-2009, 12:53 PM http://people.csail.mit.edu/rahimi/helmet/
The MIT study rightly notes there is amplification of certain frequency bands, however, they are wrong in thinking the purpose of the hat is to attenuate all frequencies. Some hats, such as a more sophisticated version of the centurion style with selctive tuning known as the farrakhan hat, are designed to recieve instructions from the alien mothership to the exclusion of all others.

navy-jeepster 08-16-2009, 11:37 AM Does anyone know how long it takes to get from Reno to the Loon Lake trail head area?
I have someone for the work weekend that may come from Reno, but just wondering what is the best way, and about how long it will take.
Also, towing a camper also.
Todd
microtus 08-16-2009, 04:48 PM I still have a small stash of tinfoil hats that I can pass out if anybody that shows up for the work party needs one.
If you don't like the tinfoil hats, show up for the work party anyways and I'll throw in some hard frozen ice cream to go with dessert after dinner on Saturday.

Dickdog 08-16-2009, 08:36 PM OK me and my son are going to sign up.. this time I'm going to bring the rig. :) We are going in alone on friday and staying both nights so if there are any other toyotas heading in that day it would be cool if we could meet up.
plus, No thank you on the tin foil hat:grinpimp: but a couple of FOTR sticks would be cool :D:D to put on my rig.

Is this a joke? The annointed Rubicon Trail Boss doesn't know how to give directions to the Rubicon. Man, that's rich.
See you there this weekend Todd, if you don't get lost. hehehe

I know how to give directions to the Rubicon. You put them into your GPS device and let it drive you...
Have someone that may show up that is coming from Reno, but he was not sure of the best way to get there from Reno.
I put in the address into my Sony GPS device, and it drives me there...
It got me to Rubicon Springs.

The plan looks great!
There is still more jobs available folks, so if you can help out the trail this weekend, even if your just a drive by, stop and give a hand!
chasinternet 08-19-2009, 06:45 PM Are we using one of the established campgrounds (Airport/Wentworh/Loon) or everyone on their own? (I'll camp by the food storage :homer:)
Where/when we meeting up to get work assigment/supplies?
navy-jeepster 08-19-2009, 08:50 PM Chas
Thanks for the gentle nudge that I failed to list that info.
Camping at Airport Flat, and meeting there for the briefing at 0800, or 8:00am.
Then head out to Loon for supplies, and head out.
Thanks
Todd
chasinternet 08-19-2009, 10:24 PM I'll come up Friday and camp. I'll have tools including the rotary hammer.
If we need anchors/rebar/concrete - or anything else from the 'po (Home Depot) - need to let me know by tomorrow (before evening) and I'll buy it.
See you there.
randii 08-20-2009, 04:53 PM Reminder -- just in case anyone didn't catch the change in venue: this work weekend will stage out of Airport Flat Campground, just north east of where Icehouse Road crosses Gerle Creek.

And that's FREE camping :smokin:
Thought I'd mention that since state parks in the county are now $35-$45 a night....
Maybe we should stand near the state park entrances and offer free camping at Rubicon Trail if they do some work

navy-jeepster 08-20-2009, 09:03 PM Yes, but if you want to take off and camp on the trail after dinner, you will be free to do that.
I am very appreciative of those coming up to help us on this weekend.
I will have a few cold drinks of choice for those that want one.
Thanks

Do we have all the tools and supply's needed? Chasinternet posted a question about supply's, maybe you answered him on a PM? Do we need any concrete tools?
I took before photos, in some areas, but not near Wentworth springs. In order to prove that the work is being done we need before and after photos. Having photos of people doing the work is great too. I talked with Jesse last night and he said that was the turning point in the water board meeting when RTF showed their presentation showing people working on the trail.
For other groups that are working on the trail ( The rock race last weekend mention a clean up a LS on the 29th) Take pictures of people working. The main focus is safety and water quality.
If you take before and after photos try to remember where you were standing so you get good before and after. Just like they do on the TV shows. I also find that getting back and getting the big pictures works good, you can always zoom in.
One more note I have a HAM exam to administer on Sat. morning and will be already pack and ready to head out once the testing is over. Should be there around lunch time. (Todd already know this)

Thanks to those that came to the work weekend.
Got a lot of hard work done for the trail and the Rubicon users.
Little Sluice marking with hay bales and carsonites.
Wentworth Springs Kiosk - Repaired a couple of holes in the building, set the wag bag recipticle for use on the concrete pad.
Loon Lake - poured a concrete pad for the wag bag recipticle, and repositioned the oil recipticle on the pad to straighten it out.
Installed more trail markers on the slabs from Loon Lake up to replace ones that have broken or came up from the winter.
Last but not least, we had a wonderful dinner provided by Deb and a couple of Rockheads. Thanks guys for the food. Paul also came up and cooked breakfast on Sat and Sunday. Thanks
Thanks everyone for the hard work over the weekend.
Todd - Trail Boss/IC
navy-jeepster 08-24-2009, 08:46 AM I almost forgot to thank Randii for becoming my last minute logistics guy and getting the concrete, and wood for the concrete forms.
Thanks Randii.
How we miss Dennis, as he had all this stuff for Logistics nailed down to a "T", and the Trail Boss/IC had everything that you could think of.
We had everything we needed, and Randii pulled it off at the last minute.
Thanks
Todd
