: A different kind of 1/4 eliptic ? Calling all GURU'S
cowmooflage 09-13-2002, 01:04 PM I need ideas for the buggy:)
Please show some pics of the different ways you have attatched your quarter eliptic springs to your axles (shackles), so I can shamelessly borrow your well thought out (or not) ideas for my ride.
cowmooflage 09-13-2002, 07:56 PM somebody has to have some pics to share:confused:
Slagburn 09-13-2002, 08:04 PM I have seen it done with a bolt. This one guy, he even used a couple of bolts. And there were these pieces of metal that were welded on all custom-like, right next to the bolts.
It looked like this: ---00*-----* (-----) ++

Sweeeet, I like the way bolts are right next to the pieces of steel that are welded all custom-like. Would it work if a guy were to fab it with the pieces of steel welded all custom like, right next to the bolts. It would be excactly like your diagrahm, only completely different.
TNToy 09-13-2002, 09:07 PM No that would cause too much anti-squat. It wouldn't work for shit. And the roll axis would suck.
Have you considered just welding the leaves to the axle tubes? That will keep the anti-squat liveable. Just make sure to use VERY small tacks, or else you'll ruin the spring. It'll hold. Really.
H8monday 09-14-2002, 12:18 AM Well since we have fawked with you a little, I guess we could actually give some helpfull info.
I have seen them use many dirivitives of multi directional shackles such as this goofy shackle on my wrap bar.
Lance's set up is simple, strong and works well. You should be able to do a search and find many pics from when he 1st recieved it from S&N Fabrication.
Here is a simple version of a multi directional shackle.

patooyee 09-14-2002, 05:30 AM I'll get some close ups of mine and post them later tonight. I just used regular shackles. I fiure I'll be getting more flex than i can use anyway, so what's the point of multi-directions stuff?

cowmooflage 09-14-2002, 12:43 PM Cool, this is the kind of stuff I need to see and also the pro's and con's you guy's have with the different set ups.
zstrange 09-15-2002, 09:14 AM this isnt mine/cruiser i saw at gsmtr. hope it helps
zstrange 09-15-2002, 09:19 AM another
zstrange 09-15-2002, 09:23 AM another cruiser 1/4 ellip.
ScoutsHonor 09-15-2002, 11:44 AM I will snap some pics of mine tonight when I go to my shop... but one thing is what kind of springs are you gonna use?
I see a lot of people use just whatever they have... and some use custom built ones from Alcan or Avalanche. What I did on mine, since I knew they would be supporting some substantial weight... was took 1 ton SuperDuty Ford leaf springs and cut them the usual way....
You may be thinkin... damn... stiff springs.. but they flex beautifully. They also gave me the perfect amount of lift that I needed to sit level with the front, and I can almost gurantee you that they flex just as good as any others.
Another thing I did different was to mount the entire leaf end to the frame, versus building a pivoting shackle as some people do.. (might be kinda hard to understand). The spring is built into a custom mount, which is all welded/bolted to the frame. Works out nice, and still makes them removeable should you change your mind...
A lot of people swear up and down that 1/4 elliptic isn't the best suspension for heavy rigs (IE 44s, Rockwells, etc.) (or at least a lot of people here do) but so far I've been very satisfied with the way the 1/4 elliptic has worked...
If you need any more info gimme a holler... I'm working on my 4 link right now for the rear, and I can snap some pics for you if you're interested!

cowmooflage 09-15-2002, 12:11 PM Yes, more pics.
I've got a complete set of wrangler springs (front 4/rear 5) and I basically took the two sets to make one good pair. I haven't cut them down yet, as I am not sure how far to cut in to them. I also have a set of springs from my '90 K-5. I had planned to sandwich which ever set I use to the frame and using a cut section of 3X5 box tube to bolt to the frame, which is a custom 2X4 box tube.
patooyee 09-15-2002, 05:50 PM Here are the pics I promised of my shackles. Like someone above said, I used Chevy 1-ton rear springs and kept the overload leaves. I've heard of people being dissapointed with the 1/4 elips because when they load their rig down in the back it sags too much. The overload leaves solve that. (I left one leaf out of my 1-ton pack.)

cowmooflage 09-17-2002, 04:48 PM Thank's for the pics, are there any other variations that any of you might have?
Any pro's or con's with the different set ups?
