85Surf 09-13-2002, 11:27 PM what is the best 4x4 quad for rock crawling,
evenBIGGERrock 09-14-2002, 08:25 AM I don't have a lot of experience, but I can say I'm VERY happy with my Prarie 650's. I just got them this last spring, but I have done at least some crawling. Most extensive was took a day and ran Deer Valley while camping in Aug. The 650's are a big machine, but the power and drive train make it feel a lot smaller than it really is. I really like the ability to "lock" the front diff ON THE FLY. Came in pretty handy a few times. One could argue that locking on the fly isn't that necessary (e.g.: Grizzly you have to stop, hit the button, then go), but it sure is nice. The machine is pretty well balanced and easy enough to handle, lots of power and low end grunt, and even from the factory it is pretty well amored. I do have the aftermarket Metaltek Al skids, but I wouldn't reccommend them (too much $$ for what they are). On top of all that, it's still a blast to juice the throttle when you hit open forest service trail. :D
We ran Deer Valley with my uncle and his Sportsman 500s. My bro and I did a little comparing. (I'll see if I can get him to throw his $0.02 in since he has more seat time than I). We both agreed that it felt like maybe the Sportsmans were maybe a little more agile on the rocks. Probably due to their IRS because at the same time they actually felt bigger and heavier than the Praries. Probably because of the seating on them. On the Polaris you kinda sink into the seat a little and the handlebars are a little higher. Feels a little more like a tank. The praries have a harder seat and you sit "higher" (or at least it feels that way). However, that harder seat also makes it easier to get your butt out off it and shift your weight around when you need to.
Couple final tidbits: Kawi has gone to some measures to keep the CG lower on the Prarie, including moving the fuel tank to under the right rear fender. Also, the tranny on this thing is sweet. It's fully auto, but when you have to shift ranges it's like shifting a Ferrari. The Sportsmans feel more like I'm shifing my Dad's old International fuel truck that had to be double clutched when going down into 3rd gr. I've still got the factory tires on my Praries and they did just fine for us on the trail, but from what I hear they're pretty crappy and ANYTHING aftermarket will be tons better. There's probably more data I could throw, but I'm tired of typing for now.
85Surf 09-14-2002, 11:43 AM thank you ,
VERY VERY MUCH.
HOW MUCH DID you pay for each 4x4 quad?
evenBIGGERrock 09-14-2002, 10:35 PM sticker + tax, lic, prep fee, etc etc etc = something like 7500 ea.
Won't get any killer deals in this area, they're too hot. If you watch the forums you'll hear of guys back east/mid west getting them for like as little as 6K. Never happen out here. I picked mine up at GoodTimes on Auburn Blvd. Last time I was in there (couple months ago) they were running a special on a couple of them ('02s maybe to clear out for '03s) for something like 6500.
If at anypoint you go looking at new ones, GoodTimes treated me good, but to be blunt they don't know jack about ATVs. From what I hear they are the $hit when it comes to bikes, but they're pretty ignorant when it comes to quads.
85Surf 09-14-2002, 11:37 PM do you want to get rid of the bent one,?
p.s. in oregon last year,
in the paper,
you could get a 4x4 quad ,with like 30 hours on it for 3.5k
with helmet gloves and boots too.
and that was a 2001 in 01.
what gives here?

nope. It's already taken care of. Short story is: on the same camping trip I mentioned above, I had to leave early so I left my quads with by bro for him and his buds to enjoy. One of the guys nailed a boulder just right that was jutting up on the trail. completely ripped the front skid off and tweaked the frame. He's taking care of it. In fact, he may have picked it up from the shop already.

First off: was it a KVF 650? There's lots of 4x quads out there in a pretty wide range of prices. Even used, I'ld be pretty amazed if it was a KVF 650 that was that new for that price, unless there was something seriously wrong with it.
Second: they typically don't hold their value much. You can usually pick up a used one for a LOT less than new. At one point I considered getting used. Biggest problem is '01 is the first year the KVF 650 came out.........not many used ones out there, period. Not to mention within reasonable driving distance.
Third: I was looking to get a pair (one for the wife, one for me) plus I needed to get totally outfitted. That meant even if I bought used it was going to be quite a bit of $$. Can't get financing for used. ;-). So instead, I paid the extra to get new, totally outfitted (trailer, helmets, gloves, skids, winches, fuel packs, service manual..............) plus I at least get the factory warranty. Plus the dealer is cool enough that since I bought the quads, I got ALL the other stuff for like 15% off (even the trailer) and they rolled EVERYTHING into the loan. In the end, I actually may have even saved a few $$ because I got the discount on so much other stuff.
85Surf 09-17-2002, 12:29 AM How many months a year do you get to ride them?
you are correct, the quad for 3.5 k was i think a "4x4 500"2001
honda i think,
you got totaly outfitted too how cool,
and its all on the loan, too ,
did not know you can do that!:D

It's just a matter of how you're equipped and what kind of riding you want to do. In April I took a run with my Uncle up around Bowman lake.......in the snow. Turns out it was a really nice/mild day for it. My Uncle has gone to the extent of getting full on foulies (hard core sailing gear) and he's equipped to ride in ANY weather. So it you want....year round. I'll have to find the link I've got of a guy in the midwest that owns a kvf650 and he has pics of himself riding in the snow/mud.

Only thing I didn't buy from them were the soft-side storage bags for the back racks, and bike-to-bike radios. I didn't like the selection they had at the dealer (or lack there of I should say) and I found way better deals on line.

did not know you can do that!:D
Yep, I didn't know it either. I had actually gotten setup to finance through my credit union. Figured I'ld put all the extras on plastic :( Then when I got there it turns out I was having some technical difficulties with my C.U. so the sales guy (Ernie) told me about the financing they had and that they'ld roll everything into it. I was like "TOTALLY SWEET!". I spent a pile of $$, probably more than I should have, but hey: gotta have toys, I'm totally happy with EVERYTHING I've bought, and it's only money. :D . All said and done, I spent just under 20K  (did I say that out loud? shhhhh, don't tell my wife).
See if I can recall everything I bought: Prarie 650 (x2), bitchin' zieman trailer for 2+ quads (has room for a small 3rd, built in ramp, storage box in front for your crap and a rack for fuel jugs), 2K lb. Warn winches (x2), MetalTek front/middle/rear/cv joint skid plates (x2), ATV covers (x2), case of tire slime, tire patch kits w/ plugs (x2), thumb savers (x2), helmets (x2), pair gloves (x2), extra fuel cells (x4), service manual. that's everything in the loan.
Then I went on line and found: storage/gear bags for back racks, Nady full-duplex radios (that I STILL haven't received  ).
Then I went and realized I still forgot a few things: spare tire for trailer (picked one up @ local Big-O), lock for trailer, tie down straps, and they didn't order the damn mounting kit for the winches (example of the fact they don't know jack about ATVs).
Then couple months ago I had to buy some stuff to do the first service on them (10hr. break in): cleaner and oil for air filters, oil filters, oil, new seals for drain plugs.
Speaking of oil, let me know if you do go with a Prarie 650 (or if you know anyone that has one), I can hook you up with the oil needed for the rear end. Only way you can buy it around here is 5 gal. pail which comes to something like about 10K miles worth even for me with 2 quads!! I'ld gladly give it away to a fellow rider for pennies on the dollar just so I don't have to have that quantity kicking around.
Priest 09-18-2002, 09:47 AM This is the brother chiming in for my .02 on the rockcrawling on the quads.
I would agree that the Sportsman 500's did feel a little better on the rocks and I think it has to do with the the IRS. You get a little nicer ride and you gain a little ground clearance on the Sportsman. That being said, that is the only thing I liked better about the Polaris. The thing that I like least was how on the 500's the front hubs stick out past the lip of the rim so that you are constantly trying to keep from smaking the hubs on rocks (the Praries have a flat faced wheel flange so there is no "hub" to speak of).
The shifting on the Praries is much, much nicer than the Sportsman. The instrumentation was something that was also very nice, you even get a fuel gauge with the Kawi. The Prarie felt much lighter than the Polaris even though they are comparable in weight and I'm convinced it was due to the lower CG of the Kawi (and the fact that I flopped the Polaris....:D ). The locking front diff on the Kawi is also a great option (although with it locked it can be a bitch to try and turn on granite) and came in handy many times.
The power of the Prarie is absolutly insane. We went for an evening ride one night. My buddies were on a couple of Honda Recon 250s. We rode for 15 miles or so and we ended up on pavement. I decided to see what it was like on asphault so I pinned the throttle. Good thing I was prepared be cause it takes some serious to hold onto the bike. I glanced down and saw "57mph" on the speedo. At which time I immediatly lifted and slowed down to 30 to let everyone catch up. Oh, and it is also impressive when you pull a wheelie on a 4wd quad... :D.
I believe that if you do some reading you'll find that right now, there isn't a sweeter 4WD quad on the marked than the Prarie 650. Keep in mind that my brother there is an Engineer and he really did his homework before buying these things..........and damn, they kick ass.
