Grand Canyon Sierra Club Alert! 05-01-01
Ironwood Forest National Monument is under siege.
We need your help TODAY to let our elected officials know we support this monument.
Representative Jim Kolbe (AZ District 5) is planning to visit Ironwood this month with representatives from ASARCO mining company. ASARCO has apparently asked that the monument be carved up into four pieces so they can access copper deposits within it. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN!
Representative Kolbe needs to hear from YOU TODAY that he should not even consider any boundary change proposals from ASARCO. Ironwood Forest National Monument protects critical wildlife corridors among several distinct and biologically important mountain ranges. Tampering with the monumentís boundaries will compromise its ability to protect the wildlands, wildlife and cultural resources for which it was designated.
Write or call Representative Jim Kolbe today at:
2266 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515
(202) 225-2542
Email: jim.kolbe@house.mail.gov
Let Rep. Kolbe know that you are an Arizona resident (and one of his constituents, if you live in his district) and you strongly support Ironwood Forest National Monument with its current boundaries. Ask for his help in heading off any boundary change or acreage decrease proposals from ASARCO or any other consumptive interests.
For more information on Arizona's five new national monuments and monument events, contact Julie Sherman at the Sierra Club, (602) 254-0361 or julie.sherman@sierraclub.org.
Additional information (descriptions, maps, photos, action items and more) is available at our Arizona Five New National Monuments web pages.
