: Need opinions on single upper shank size....

I am getting a little closer to installing my ford KP 60 and I need to purchase my upper arm joints. I will be running a single passenger side upper arm with a ballistic adjustable frame bracket. Problem is, space is running low and I'm unable to run a JJ on the frame side due to it's 2.63 width hitting the starter.

I work across the street from summit machine, and Mike can build me a jimmy joint that will fit perfectly. However, I will be relegated to running a 7/8" shank on my upper arm.

Do you think this will be a large enough shank for a TJ 4.0 at on 60s and 42" MTRs?

Thanks in advance,
Marcus

For an upper yeah you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply.

I stopped by Ben Hanks Racing here in SLC, and they recommended cutting and tapping a 1.25 .375 wall upper for 7/8. If it works, cool. It's going to look a little puny compared to the 2" lowers:D

Marcus,

Are you going to run a 14 bolt rear maybe a stretch? What are your planned mods.

I'm stretching it from my current WB of 100" to 110-111". I also have 70U going underneath and 42" MTRs will be the shoe of choice.

I am trying to keep my 3.5" Front & 3" rear coils for a super low COG which is what is making it so tough. I'd kill for some undercarriage pics of one of Chris Durham's rigs.

After I get it wheeling, I'll have someone boatside it and install a durham hood and grille.

Tim's rig used RE coilbuckets that had offset coils with no highsteer, then full hydo. Tweeba's is the closest so far.

BTW, is this Ceeko?

7/8 shank is plenty strong enough. I ran a 3/4 shank on mine. Only reason for a bigger shank on the lowers is because they see impact forces from rocks. The upper arms are 100% tension/compression if its set up correct with no binding

ATXZJ,
Do you have a build thread going anywhere for this episode of your build?
Your one step ahead of me...again.:p

Yup thats me. Have you checked out Kirbys build? Sounds like good on the build. I just paid mine off Friday so soon I should have a bit more cash to do what I want to with it.

If you are going to tap .375 wall DOM, I would suggest using 1.75" solid 7075 and drilling/tapping it. You can get it for $10-15 a foot, and its plenty worth it! I finally converted all my links to aluminum and besides the weight savings and bling, they are tough as hell

Don't worry, I got a head start and then fell on my face. Had to get going again as all my wheeling buddies seem to be running 40" stickies and I still had 35:(

Thanks, that's what I was thinking but needed to hear it from a few others.

BTW, great build!

Nice, good to hear you're still wheeling. Did you make it out to Krock before they closed it?

Thanks. (for the compliment too)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I ended up going with a 7/8 jimmy joint on the frame side and a 1" johnny joint on the axle side while using a 1.75 .250 single upper. I'll post some front suspension pics up tomorrow.

Picked up some bling from Mike @ summit machine yesterday. He was able to build three Jimmy Joints to the exact specification to fit my existing brackets. With these, I can now finish my front suspension. I can't tell you how cool it is to have a shop in town that can produce this kind of product
