404 temp sender

Hey guys, most of you dont seem to be mog owners, but i am sure some of you are.
My problem is that I broke the capillary for my temp gauge. even though my mog has never overheated, I would like to know its temp from time to time. So does anybody know if a generic temp sender will fit in the mog block. Since my truck is a rockcrawler and not a show truck, I dont care about the gauges being the same. thanks guys.

But seriously, its a 404. I am assuming its a standard gauge. The gauge is fine, but I broke the capillary.

Have you contacted any of the Unimog part dealers yet? I know you could put an aftermarket gauge and sender in. But, I think that just buying the capilary tube would be alot cheaper.

The original unit is with the capillary filled with alcohol.
Perhaps one of our US contacts have them, or contact
Frank Flick or Merex in old germany.
I found (down here) an electriv 12V replacement.
Fits good in the place. Brand is "Farias".
Installed a new 12V line to a relais that switched with
the ignition.

"Hello K.C.

The busted capillary tube means the end of the road for that gauge. Get out
billfold.

I installed a VDO electric temperature gauge. Temperature gauge, sender,
adapter ring: VDO 310-080, 323-416, 600-851.

The threads measure 14 x 1.5 (metric) for the sensor, and this new one will
screw right in.

To use the gauge on 24 v either buy the voltage reducer offered by VDO or use
about 166 Ohms external resistor (I used 2 x 63 Ohms in series) gives right
voltage drop with 80 to 100 ma current required (measured at 12 vdc).

Get a 24 volt bulb for the meter.

The mounting hole diameter is 58 mm so use the spacer to get the 2 1/16" meter
to fit.

Option two from the Mog Tech folk..

Just order a new gauge from Scott Ingham. About $72 and he'll get it right out
to you. You can't just order the capillary tube, because it's a sealed unit.

When you get the new one, you don't need to drain your coolant. Put the new
gauge in the dash and run the capillary down near the block where you'll need to
insert it. Just unscrew the old unit from the block and stick the new one in.
You'll only lose about 1/4 cup of coolant.
