"Vintage"??? I don't know about that.

But: "gas mileage, it barely gets beyond the single digits."

That one sounds more like it! :D

GREAT, just what we need, *more* people thinking that their rusted-out, POS parts trucks are "classic vintage Land Cruisers".....at this rate, I'm *never* going to find the right FJ40....sigh!

I guess you have not been introduced to Wilbur.....

...depending on how you group "parts" it could be less than 70% :flipoff2:

Wilbur, 71 FJ-55, 15,650 ORIGINAL miles, stock 'cept front disc brakes and and some resto work (paint, interior)

100% rust free Texas truck.

Giddy up!

<MSNBC snip>
They do tend to be a little rough,” says Texan Nolen Grogan, who owns two old Land Cruisers. One of the reasons some of the trucks are rare is they weren’t really built to last: Land Cruisers are known for fast-rusting body panels and there’s a spot on the frame of some Jeep Wagoneers that attracts moisture and corrodes prematurely.
<snip>

Makes it sound like Land Cruisers were not built to last
:confused:

Sup wit dat?

I don't know where the hell he got that. I did tell him about Wilbur and the fact that my Fj-55 was rust free and that that particular model of Land Cruiser is very prone to rust.

Really makes him sound like a Bozo since he is doing an article on vintage rigs saying they don't last.....:confused:

Oh well, Damn Yankees......go by his office and straighten him out for me ;)

yah, you should ask him why they're still around if they don't last

Nolen:

Reminds me of the comment made by a mobster leaving the courtroom some years back "Hey Mario (or whatever his name was) - got anything to say to the press?" "Nah, why bother, you'd get it wrong, anyway!"

Folks, ya have to remember that when reading/watching/listening to the media, they quite often mis-quote, mis-construe, mis-understand, and blatantly manipulate information for whatever agenda they have. In Nolens case, the reporter obviously came away with some notion that Cruisers were not built to last - what a load of nonsense that is! The fact that many of us are out there wheeling 30 year old rigs with many original drivetrains/drivetrain components, is a testament to the durability of these rigs.

Just wondering how a Wall Street Journal reporter from New York end up talking to a guy in Texas?

WSJ and MSNBC were exactly the same articles!! I was just refering to your comment on this board about how you told him the 55s tend to rust a bit!! Yikes! I got that FJ-55 home Saturday, thanks to the help of another Cruiserhead and learned that up close and personal

Sarah was NOT pleased to see it parked in front of the house Sunday afternoon when she got home from a week in NYC, and even less so when she saw it in the day light today!!:(

It has potential though, but I certainly didn't get as lucky as Butch did with his 60! Engine and trannie are solid - 76 2F and 4spd, and it cranks right up and purrs like a kitten. I and my freind Erik were amazed at that!! The brakes had been completely redone (CCOT kit), but need a good bleeding, the rad and cooling system are new including a new fan/clutch. Needs a battery, but other than the the electrical is good - all lights/blinkers/wipers, etc worked. Rear window motor needs a rebuild, of course.

The springs are shot and it looks like the original shocks too! If I keep it, more on that in a moment, it will defintely need a new suspension - probably go with the Alcans after what I've read on the 55 List. The body has the usual rust, but the worst areas are the front fenders and the bottom 6 inches of the body, including the floor. Lots of creative patchs from POs. Will need a new floor and the rockers will get cut for sliders like Morgan's. All the doors arre solid, but could use some weatehr stripping in places.

I haven't decided to keep it, but what ever I do, I'll be keeping Sarah (or more properly, not give her reason not to keep me!!!! ;) ) Turns out, while driving through town today, I saw that a guy I know has his 40 up for sale. It is THE cleanest 40 in town, until mine is done of course! :D Its completely stock, no rust that I could see last I saw it up close. I think its an 82, Freeborn Red. So, marital politics being what it is, it seems that I may be given clearance to spend a little more cash for my Trooper replacement than originally thought!!:D She REALLY hates that Piggy!!

You might see a 55 up for sale soon! :( :D
