Whats the best way to gear down for running trails with 47s? This is a buggy that will be running a smallblock chevy, turbo 350, transfercase at the moment is a 203 but also have a 205, rear axle will be 14bolt, 60 front. This is the midwest so very few rocks, mostly steep hillclimbs in the woods, Deeep mud, & extracting duties. I wanna gear it properly & sensable priced. So do i change the gearing all thru the axles or tcase or both?

Get the LoMax 3:1 NP205 behind the 203 and 4.88 axle gears. I have a 454/TH400/Klune2.72/205/4.56/48" tires and a little more gearing would be perfect. If you built the crossmember right you can run a stock 205 now and upgrade to the LoMax when you get more money. IMO

So are u saying to start with axle gearing first? Whats the reason to go 4.88 over say like 5.13? Thanx for the help

with that size of tire u need a light weight rig with more gearing than usual. The cheapest way out would be trade your tons for rocks (then u wont have to regear), u wont have to worry about your drive shaft angle, and for your type of wheelin they are plenty strong. U will also need a healthy small block ( a wore out 350 is not up to the job) and a doubler or a steep atlas is needed.

Figure out what your buddies are running and use a crawl ratio calculator to figure out the combo u need/ want.

good luck with the build, post up some pics

Im not a fan of 5.XX series or lower gears in 1ton axles. They hold up for some people but I would rather do multiple t-case gear ranges. An Atlas 4 speed would provide lots of gearing options too. Axle and t-case gears should be done at the same time or the transmission won't last long.

thanx for all the helpfull advice. I found a deal on 47s & a front dana 60 so i was weighing my options. I have no idea what to do now. I like the idea of the roks but i dont like that theys so heavy. My buggy only weighs 3500lbs. & im sure you can get alota money wrapped up on brakes & mods on the roks to get em wheelable.

Just to let you know you gain less than 300lbs going to rocks over a 14bolt and 60 combo! The nice thing about the rocks are you can drive it like you stole it!

Not only weight but i would need to widen my trailer amongst all of the other crap id have to do to that axle. Dont get me wrong im thinking about doing it but im just looking for the easiest route so i can get out & wheel sooner. I think im just gunna run my 38inch ags with my 60/14 combo for a few more years cuz its a wild ride & im enjoying it.
