: Places to get current info on Land Use Issues
YellowSub1962 04-04-2001, 12:46 AM <FONT COLOR="Yellow">Here are the sites that I use most frequently. Some of them also have mailing lists and alert lists. I would encourage you to visit them and explore the sites and get on a few (if not all) mailing lists. (warning: this may give you upwards of 100 e-mails a day, usually 35-40.)This is by no means a full list, just a list I compiled from the resources I use the most. Belly Dragger 06-05-2001, 03:16 PM Get the latest and greatest Roadless Inititive information here http://roadless.fs.fed.us/
From http://roadless.fs.fed.us/documents/rule/rule_fedreg.html
Since the publication of the FEIS, the agency has received comments
on the FEIS and the preferred alternative. Generally, these comments
mirror comments received on the NOI and DEIS. The majority of these
respondents asked for the prohibitions to immediately take effect on
the Tongass National Forest, and for additional prohibitions on off-
highway vehicle use, grazing, and mining activities. Some respondents
provided additional information on potential environmental and economic
effects, which the agency has reviewed and determined fall within the
range of effects disclosed in the FEIS. These comments were considered
by the agency in the development of the final rule and are in the
project record.
... Most of the respondents in this second group maintained that the
proposed rule did not prohibit enough development activities. They
stated that the final rule should immediately ban timber harvest, other
commodity production, and motorized recreation from roadless areas
1,000 acres or larger, and that the agency should not defer
conservation of roadless areas to future land management planning
processes.

Ed A. Stevens 10-04-2001, 06:49 PM Add the following link to your research folder:
http://www.guidestar.com/search/
This site archives tax returns for non-profit organizations. When you find you intended research target (say the Southwest Center for Biological Diversity or the Earth Island Institute) you can lookup the true financial background of the organization, including the principle leadership on the .pdf images of the IRS form 990 on file.
Read these tax filings, with close attention to Part III (statement of program service accomplishments) and you can get an idea of how twisted the "education" basis for a non-profit can be interpreted. Compare this with the reporting in Part VIII (relationship of activities to the accomplishments of excempt purposes) and you can perceive a clear picture of the organizations intent.
Oh, on these tax statements the names and addresses of the officers are listed (just in case you want to send them a letter of encouragement).
Another good search is to use the simple word "forest" to reveal the many forest preservation organizations on file. A cross reference of the membership and research into the false claims for tax exempt status could result in finding some RECCO Act violations...

Crowdog 10-14-2001, 02:40 PM If you want to follow the money that the greenie organizations get, here is a search engine:
http://209.190.208.154/crc/searchdatabase.asp
Type in the name of the organization (eg. Sierra Club) and it will come back with who donated to them. You can also look at a grantmaker (like Turner Foundation) to see who they donated to. This is where I found out that Ted Turner is supporting the Center for Biological Diversity.

Joe V 10-18-2001, 06:23 PM I have to get something off my chest.
I'm guilty of being one of those four wheelers, who gets involved with land issues, then doesn't.... Then gets involved again, then doesn't, etc., etc., etc.
Back and forth I go...lately I've been feeling really guilty about it.
I figured alot of it has to do with how I'm doing financially. If I'm doing good at work and making money - I'm all over the current land issues, but when times are tight (like they have been for the last few years) I kinda drop out.
Well, times are decent right now and I'm involved again. I gotta sign up with LUN again too.
Sorry if I bored anyone.
BTW, Thanks for the links!!
YellowSub1962 10-18-2001, 10:11 PM <font color="yellow">Joe, I totally understand how you feel. I finally got to the point wheree I had enough of the Eco-Nazi BS. I've been a member of BRC and CA4WDC for several years, but I felt I had to do more. I donated a little bit here and there when I had it, but just as importantly - I started showing up at work days and trail projects all over the state. Finacially its not always possible to contribute, but you can always find time to help in some way. Writing letters, working on a trail, going to meetings.... these things seem like so little at the time, but mean so much in the big picture. Mike and I have driven up to Rubicon (535 mileseach way), slept in his Acura, worked on the trail and returned home - all in 36 hours... I write between 2 and 20 letters a week to various people and organizations. I forward everything important to others in my local area, and so on....
Sometimes you just need to step back and take a bit of time off. I have been "lurking" in the background for about a month now, due to some personal issues. I'm getting straightened out now and ready to focus more on the current issues, though I have been active the whole time. Just do what you can, we can't ask for anything more. Help out others when they need it and someone will be there to help you when you need it <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">...</font c>
