Wheels and Tires:
The other news this week is that I finally got the chance to see my new wheels and tires.
Some of you may recall, that I had posted a thread several months back "Looking for Michelin XZL's or alternate 20" tires" In the end we decided on the 14.5R20 Continental MPT81's which I ordered from Expedition Imports. The guys there were very nice. They made a shipping mistake (forgot to send me the tubes I ordered) but were very fast to correct it.
I haven't had a chance to drive on the tires yet, but they look great and I can't wait to try them.
UNFORTUNATELY, the tires came mounted on the set of 20" split rim wheels that I ordered from USA6x6, which were scheduled to arrive 2 months ago...
Well, they finally showed up and they're pieces of junk at the moment. Four out of the five wheels have leaking welds that won't hold air (didn't they test them!?), they also forgot to put in the O-rings, and the stud holes are the wrong size. AAARRRGGHH! I've sent them back now and hope that they don't take another 2 months to come back. If I hadn't paid for them already I would just cancel the whole order, I'm so frustrated.
Ken Carter / BRUISER 07-29-2009, 06:05 AM ya I saw that.. I knew someone else would notice that
hadfield4wd 07-29-2009, 06:10 AM That thing is awesome. But with a truck that big does he really need that silly little trailer?

Exactly what I was thinking
CTD NUT 07-29-2009, 07:08 AM X3.
All that effort to build an awesome large RV/Expedition truck only to find out it isn't quite big enough? http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/smilies/shaking.gif Backing up would be virtually impossible. Nice build, though.
uglyscout 07-29-2009, 07:25 AM The little trailer appears to be a promo thingy for someone they know/a sponsor.
My question is how much would something like this cost and who do I have to kill to get one? Seriously, how does a family with 2 small children that travels the world swing a probably $500,000 expo rig?
85blue4runner 07-29-2009, 10:36 AM that is about the last platform that I would choose for an expo rig, especially one that is 4 full doors and a half door on a traditional cab. There is a reason that most expedition rigs use cabover (MAN, IVECO, etc) or short cab chassis (Unimog).
The trailer is also very ghey, even if it is a promo piece.
Ditch the 700 pound bumper on the original truck and its pretty sweet...

His name is Shapiro right? :D :flipoff2:
HITMONEY 07-29-2009, 04:36 PM Yeah I saw this thing while searching for info on my 750 and read most of the build blog, that spanned a few years.
Crazy crazy rig...
And to call an F-750 an "Eco-Roamer" made me chuckle.
Here is their official site as well..

I just don't get where you can drive that thing that a nice diesel pusher with a towed land rover with tent attachment would not go in the US. I guess you could ship it to Africa or mexico and drive around the desert?? With the length and cross sectional area forget driving down most trails you will need a road anyway. I guess it does allow you to drive off the road to the camping spot.
The talk about departure angles made me laugh. That thing is HUGE and obviously top heavy what kind of slopes are you going to take on. Especially when in the middle of nowhere you flop that thing with it being your house and no way to right it? Sorry kids I rolled the house and I am waiting for the Sickorsky to get out here to right us!
I guess to me the small increase in areas you are able access would not be worth the enormous effort and expense.

gte719p 07-30-2009, 06:23 PM Not my cup of tea, but people do it. You have obviously never watched the Dekar rally. You can do some pretty stupid stuff in a big truck. No its never going to pass as an extreme rock crawler, but it will get you more places then you might imagine.
With what passes as a road in Africa or the outback in Australia departure angle can be important. He probably will endup needing it. Hell as much as that beast cost he better end up using it.

MT4Runner 07-30-2009, 09:46 PM Cool truck. Makes my Toterhome look underbuilt!!
I can't believe all the love about it being an "Eco-friendly" vehicle. :shaking: Maybe if I ran my diesel on bio, I could tell all the greenies I'm one of them?
Ken Carter / BRUISER 07-31-2009, 06:22 AM funny in his post he mentioned driving it from NJ to AZ.. hehe my dodge could do that with my bed camper in back :)
HITMONEY 07-31-2009, 12:45 PM I think the plan is to ship it overseas and travel around while raising their kid, so it wasn't built with North America in mind from what I gather.
Here are their shakedown videos of it the first time off road I think...

Looks as stable as a Bi-Polar blond off her meds after a 2-4-1 Margarita night.
MR4WD 07-31-2009, 02:38 PM After watching the video, I predict fairly immediate failure of the camper body. I bet the whole shootin match falling off the truck. I've driven hundreds of heavy 4x4's and 6x6's and never enjoyed the experience of the exaggerated swaying like the body on that.
FWIW, a modern heavy 4x4 handles shitty roads way better than a 2wd truck of the same class. I would prefer that over it's 2wd twin.
