: Jeep insurance question
HILAKE2 07-30-2009, 04:31 PM Boring topic i know.
So I went to talk to the insurance lady today about the jeep.....
(sidenote....talking to the insurance lady about the modifications of my jeep was like talking to a brick wall).
I have basic coverage which means in the case of theft or total destruction i would get a nice fat check for ballpark 3000 bucks (enough to cover new tires and rims on my jeep).
The problem is that basic insurance covers the value of a 1983 jeep cj7.....ANY 1983 CJ7!
There is another policy that covers "stated value". What this means is i would have to find somebody "official looking" to value my jeep for what its worth, and be reimbursed said amount in the case of theft or if it is totaled.
Question 1: Do any of you guys do this second method of insurance where you would be compensated the full value instead of market value for a stock vehicle?
Question 2: Where in my area (chico) could i get a valuation of my very far from stock vehicle?
Its a 1983 cj7 with stock frame and body only....everything else is built.
I drive it to the trails, on the trails, and hopefully home from the trails. Its not a daily by any means, not to say it couldnt be but i only drive it about 2000 miles a year.
Gracias
WTF-J 07-30-2009, 05:26 PM State Farm had me take the WTF-J to an appraiser. Yeah, I had to pay for the appraisal, but he set the replacement value that SF covers. The guy was a motor head and "got it," so I was happy with the outcome. I have full coverage that mirrors my DD including emergency road service.
Good luck.
Wild Hare 07-30-2009, 07:33 PM I had my Jeep appraised at a specialty dealership and have my rig insured for the appraised value in the event of theft or total loss during towing or something I am not out everything but would be a good start on a new rig.
baldfatdad 07-30-2009, 07:42 PM My SF has me take pictures of my 8. I took tons of them. Especially stuff that's not stock. The policy is suppose to put it back to how I have it. Full coverage about $200 a year. I expect nothing from them. Have never had any luck with insurance company.
Impaired 07-30-2009, 08:01 PM I use farmers insurance. Gave them a detailed list of the parts installed and the cost of each part. I also included the cost of a mechanics labor (my estimate) to put it back to what it is now. They didn't require anything other than what I told them and the end dollar amount. Farmers Ins. charged $450 for full coverage each year 5k miles or less. it hasn't been stolen or totaled yet so I can not say what ins. games they will play when the time comes to fullfill their part of the deal.
The Black Sheep 07-30-2009, 08:52 PM No way in hell I would get my rig appraised for what its worth. Higher premiums, opt out clauses for certain modifications, the fact that its gonna get beat to shit anyways (if you really wheel your rig). I won't knock anybody that fully insures theirs, but i just took the cheap premiums and ran to the bank, hoping that nobody knew my rig was a heavily modified crawler that had half a dozen illegal mods done to it that keep it just streetable to get to the trail. Plus if I ever destroyed it, more then likely the important stuff is still good, armor, roll cages, drive trains and axles. Nothing wrong with being safe then sorry if you can afford it however.
**edit** I also put my Jeep on as a secondary vehicle and not as a recreation/fair weather vehicle. In CT my jeep cost me about 400 bucks a year which believe it or not is very very cheap.

NE-Rokrash 07-30-2009, 09:32 PM I strongly recommend getting it appraised NOW! I am currently going through insursurance hell!
We were on our way back from Moab and Montorse when an 81 year old lady decided that she would listen to her navigation system telling her to "make a u-turn!" She made a u-turn from the right lane across us in the left lane! This is what happened:

I do wheel my Jeep, and did have a general policy on the Jeep, but are not getting anywhere with Progressive (her insurance since it was 100% her fault). My policy is set to reimburse my for a 1973 CJ-5.
It has 22" stretch, 1 tons, 350-400-205 etc.
Get a policy that covers all of the goods. You DO NOT want to go through this. Their first offer was 4900.
Not all the hard parts of the Jeep are going to be good!
I got the Jeep appraised for around 35K from USA Auto Appraisers. Let him know that I told you about him if you use him! He does his appraisal for $99 online!!!! Not a plug for him, just a good price to help someone not go through hell just to get back on their feet!
ScottyB 07-30-2009, 11:26 PM ^^^ :( I would be beside myself after putting so much work into something.
The more work you have into something the better off you are insuring it more. Right now I've just got comp because it's sitting on jackstands getting built. It's only about $20 month. Once it's done I'll be adding more. I just want something to cover issues while on the road or storage....theft, fire, moron drivers cutting me off while towing :shaking: Once I'm on the rocks that's my own damn fault.
oldjeep 07-31-2009, 04:43 AM Call the insurance co and tell them that you want "Agreed value coverage"
Depending on what the $$ amount is, they'll either just have you send pictures or have it appraised. For my old CJ2a insured at $5K, State Farm just wanted pictures before writing the policy.
Little Jeep 07-31-2009, 05:33 AM Several issues here guys:
1) Just because you add mods to your Jeep does not mean that you have increased its market value. You may have actually decreased it.
2) Agreed value does not mean this is the check you will receive.
3) Appraisals are nice, and you should have one done if you are concerned about the value of your rig. However, they are only an opinion. Sometimes these opinions are just flat silly. Example, Jeep appraised for $35K, great! Now put a for sale sign in it and report back to us on the results.
4) Vehicle values are not set in stone. A convertible will sell for more in the Spring than it will sell for in the dead of Winter. Basically, what you are trying to get to is "What would the vehicle have sold (key word SOLD) for, one minute before the accident. This is the only figure that really matters.

I have State Farm and they paid off my modified 1970 CJ5 when I totaled
it off road in Nevada. All I had to do was show the receipts/pictures of the
mods and they paid for them. No hassle at all.
oldjeep 07-31-2009, 06:28 AM 2) Agreed value does not mean this is the check you will receive.
With State Farm it certainly does. They are buying off on a set $$ risk for the comp/collision and that is what they pay if it is stolen or totalled.
MuddyV8YJ 07-31-2009, 06:58 AM i know some insurance companies will only cover you if your incident happens on a "road". if you're on a trail somewhere, you're SOL.
Knuckelhead 07-31-2009, 12:24 PM Most trails are "Forestry service roads"...
depends on state regulations. easy way to get coverage is to buy additional equipment coverage . works same as stereo that people put in. in texas 5k add equip coverage cost me 2 bucks a month and i have it covering the tires, lift and winch for my k-5

You are confusing "Market Price" with "Contract Price." In agreed value, as noted by OldJeep, with Agreed Value you are insuring your vehicle at a set value agreed with the insurance co. If the market tripled or quadrupled for Jeeps, the company would only pay the agreed (i.e. Contracted) value.
jeepjack 08-01-2009, 09:12 AM I have a stated value policy for a specific amount. Because it has been totaled in the past. If you dump any large amount of money into a rig you should have a stated value policy. I have receipts plus an estimated amount of time (paid myself $50 an hour to rebuild) included into the stated value policy. I'll be damned if some ass runs a red light and fawks up my DD and I get a check for $1,200.
Talking Head 08-01-2009, 02:25 PM I have a stated value policy with Progressive...my primary concern was theft. That and the state of Arizona didn't like the fact that it was missing one of the two required vin tags when I moved here, even though it was registered as a '97 TJ in another state. They forced me to title it as a special construction, and Kemper, the insurance company we use for all of our other vehicles, wouldn't touch it after that. Progressive just wanted to know how many thousands of dollars I wanted for coverage, and this dictated the premium. I asked the guy point blank "If I barrel roll this sumbitch off the side of a mountain, clearly off road, I'm covered, right? He said "Yup." I haven't had to make a claim yet (thankfully), but we had Progressive several years ago and they were awesome when my we hit a deer with my wife's Liberty, so I don't think it will be an issue. It was a little spendier than I wanted, about $850 a year (I have a perfect dirving record), but insurance here is ridiculous anyway (due to the high theft rates).
I wouldn't mess around if you have a built rig; get as much insurance as you can afford. As that poor dude with the old lady who made a U-turn in front of him can attest, anthing can happen. And to me stated value is the way to go, because it's not what it's worth if you sell it, it's what it would take to REPLACE what you have.
