: 86 dodge PU, electrical problems
megatrek 09-14-2002, 02:34 PM I own a 86 dodge 3/4t PU, with a 360 4bbl and 4 speed. Now for the problem. I recently started having electrical problems, the truck wore the battery down to nothing. I put it on the charger and then checked the alternator. I replaced the alternator, it is now producing. The truck will run, but not with out the battery. I'm not sure if the truck is running on the battery or if it needs the battery to run. I never tested it so see before the problems cropped up. My 84 ramcharger will however run without a battery. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, nate
FULLSIZE 09-14-2002, 05:30 PM sounds like a voltage regulator or ground problem. do you have the ground strap from the battery to the block and the ground strap from the back of the head to firewall?;)
megatrek 09-14-2002, 05:43 PM I do have the both of the straps, new. I have a new voltage regulator on the way (monday). I'll update when the new regulator get here. Thanks, nate
FULLSIZE 09-14-2002, 09:47 PM also try to make sure all your grounds are on clean bare metal.:D
mjs408 09-14-2002, 11:00 PM i had massive problem with voltage regulation on my 77, wires dry rotted a little bit back from plug on regulator, and would arc out, heat up the regulator and burn it out, fixed it by cutting the plug out of a rwd newer chrysler car, 87 was the model year i think, all i know is the wires looked good, not brittle and cracked, and spliced in the new plug, fixed the problem, now if i could only get the auto tranny kick down to stay set where its supposed too...
FULLSIZE 09-14-2002, 11:14 PM oh that kickdown problem is easy.............
get a NP435 !:flipoff2:
mjs408 09-14-2002, 11:16 PM got one for me? and sides the getting the pedal assembly, is it a direct swap? with 203 case, and when i mean direct, that means i have the bell housing, clutch plate, throw out bearing and flywheel, any hang ups, because I do need a np 435!
IH Scout II 09-15-2002, 08:49 AM Just a note, opening up the circuit, disconnecting the battery when the engine is running is not a good thing......
The alternator does not feel the correct voltage.... It will spike to an unknown voltage.. Could burn or decrease the life span of your parts..... (Alternator)
Later....
FULLSIZE 09-15-2002, 08:52 PM
IH Scout II 09-16-2002, 07:44 AM Alternators are voltage sensing... If it does not feel any, it will spike. Try to charge to an infinite number... (Spike) Not saying it will happen to you, but it does happen.
You ever have had a bad battery and the alternator went out too?
Or jump-start a buds rig only to find out a couple of days later your alternator stops working?
Another words do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running....
Old tricks are not all good tricks; they worked on generators, not so good on alternators. Especially the newer stuff..
Later....
