: My senior project- '63 Scout 80

for my senior year of high school i wanted to do something worth while, so i got the idea to build a mub/beach rig (the yer before i helped my shop teacher restore a 58 chevy. so when i found this scout i fell in love with it. i hadnt really ever heard of them before but it was awesome so i baught it for 800 bucks (prolly too much now that i know more about them, but it came with a bunch of extra stuff)

I KNOW I WILL GET FLAMED FOR HOW I DID THIS, BUT IT WAS THE BEST WAY FOR MY SITTUATION.-

after learning that 152 straight 4 wasnt a good motor for big tires, i decided to go with a chevy 350, TH350, and a NP203 (not 205 becasue the 203 was there first) so yall can flame on about that drive train.

and instead of mounting that drive train to the scout frame i used a blazer frame that was already ready for the setup. shortened it 7 or so inches to make the body fit. so yes yall are right, it basically is a scout body on a chevy. flame on

keep in mind i am 17 while doing this, and it my first project ever, gotta start somewhere.

everything that we needed as far a body mounts, shifting linkage, e-brake, shortened driveshaft, radiator mount, bumpers, and alot more. i made myself. i also wired and painted the entire thing myself.

i know yall do all this stuff and more for your own rigs but this was my first with all the suff, so i was pretty proud of myself.

the build took the entire school year and yall know better that anyone that these builds are never done, i keep finding things to add or improve, or fix.

my major set back right now is that i do not have a shop/garage of my own, (parents arn't into this stuff at all, they like it but are not into working on something like this) so for now i am buming off friends, but workin on building my tool "collection" slowly as money and space permits.

here are a few before, during, and after pics. my biggest regret is that i did not take enough pics

before specs:
(nothing was bolted to the frame, the body wasnt even bolted together, motor was in the bed)

152 inline 4
T14
T18
chevy 10 front
chevy 12 rear
welded spiders
lift springs and blocks (scarry)
custom shackels out of some scrap channel iron (scarryer)
custom steering from i dont know what (scarryer)
those were three big reasons for goin with the simpler chevy stuff)
herculiner outside
35X12X15 BFG AT (manufactured 1991!!)

AFTER SEPECS:
chevy 350-holley 750
TH350
NP203
Dana44 front
chevy 12 rear (not the one from before)
blazer frame
fresh Bar-ox paint job over the herc
38X15.50R15 SSR
factory GM limited rear

TO come:
4.88 gears
locker rear (not sure what to do with front)
home made bikini top
home made tube doors
the rest of the front bumper.lol (dimond plate skirts ect.)
winch
coolers built into the side "seats" in the bed
203 with part time kit

Eventhough it is prolly done a lot different than what yall would do and what prolly SHOULD have been done, it is still my first baby, there is nothing better than driving a truck that you built with your own hands!!!

so i am hooked on messing with these things the rest of my life, already have more projects sighted out (restore 54 chevy truck, and 46 willys). i also want to do a fully custom, bullet proof rig with steering rocks, full hydro steer, diesel (cummins 12 valve prolly) and prolly want a scout 80/800 body on top of it all.

but all that must come after college, 4 years away!!! just time to build up tool and parts supply i guess.

i still have stock frame, motor , tranny, transfer case, and the axles that came with it. so that is a project in the works right there.

If you just Butt welded that frame back together without fish plating it you better do something before it falls apart while you are driving down the street and gets someone hurt.

Nice work. I was 15 when I got my SII. I wouldn't have swapped the frames but its done now, well except the fish plating that you need to do.

Here's to you:beer::beer:

ya i forgot to say, i did plate both side of the frame rail on both sides. the pic was just from right after we welded it up for the first time. i'm pretty new at the fabing part but i aint stupid.lol

but thanks for the concerns

Looks good, next get busy on the cage. As far as a shop goes, these rigs are very used to being out side. And if the sign in the back window of your truck is true, then you already know how to be a field mechanic. :D

Looks great. You did a fine job at hiding the body/frame gap that comes with that type of swap. Very professional. As for keeping the 203 and adding a part time kit, try to find a 205/T350 adaptor instead and run it straight up or go to a 203/205 doubler.

On a side note, in the second pic there appears to be some major booty fab from the previous owner:eek:. Care to go into detail?

ya i'm not worried bout leaving it outside, tryed to waterproof it as much as possible. just the shop would be handy to have a place to keep tools, now im just buming off all the farmers shops.lol

as for the cage, i wasn't wanting to do anything more because i dont think i will roll with just mudding and beach going, but after driving it a while i think i'll do a cage. haha. something that ties into the frame.

i do plan to go to 205 at some point, but right now i can't deal with changing drive shaft lengths, dont know if i can spring for two new ones, and wouldnt want to lengthen one my self (i'll shorten myself, did that once already) and the part time 203 i found was dirt cheap and mines leakin a little, so im killing 2 birds with one stone hopefully.

and the previous owner did have some scarry suspention and steering componets. i'll get a good pic of the two major things.

1) front shackels were made from some channel iron in poor shape

2) his attempt at cross over steering i guess was not the best engineering accomplishment. not even sure how to explain it, i'll get pictures, but it consisted of some thin wall tubing, angle iron, round stock with a hole drill out, and who know what else

here is the steering. if i ever use this frame this steering will not be included.lol

the nuckels are connected by a centerlink as normal. but on the pass. side of the link a piece of channel (or piece of a shackel :flipoff2:) is welded on. then on the end of it there is squar tubing with an "addaptor" on the end that looks liek it would connect to the idler arm. and on the back of the center link is angle iron all the way down the back, strength i guess.

I don't know whats worse, the booty fab or the fact that someone bootyfabbed in a 10 bolt:barf:. Whoever did that fantastic fab job needs to be strung out and the plasma taken to his willy before he has anymore offspring.

Thanks for the pics(won't say anything about the size:flipoff2:)

Not bad for a HS student (except for the horrible spelling and grammar, it must be the TX public education system).

At least you are smart enough to shit can the booty fab steering. Unlike most noobs that ask about how do I make a Z-link?

wow, thats awesome work for a 17 year old! Nice job man, you must be really proud of yourself. You're off to a good start at a young age. Now you'll prob be doing shit like this for life. I'm sure some day this thing will end up with rocks or 1 tons and a lot more! Be proud, a lot of kids your age smoke pot for a hobby. Nothing wrong with a little green now and then, but its awesome to see someone your age so productive.

ya im not much for the pot:smokin: lol . it does make me proud tho, and ya i know im already hooked, really want to "restore" a 54 GMC, but a chevy would do. and i found a 46 willeys that could be fun. but with college coming up, not time or space. :(

rocks are in the WAY future plans. back when i stared this and was getting parts, i had a 3/4 gmc for the motor, sold the truck for 100 bucks. the bad part i relized later, had a 14 bolt in the rear. wanna cry when i think about it.

and yes the spelling a grammar is thanks to my new Texas high school diploma. but it gets the job done.lol
