: Will this hold (pics) Part II
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 03:55 PM A while back i made this ram assist mount off the spring plate. After talking it over with every one here i decided to chang things around a little. If you recall i dident like the look of any thig off the axle tube, but realized i had no choice.I came up with this (pic to follow)and i dont think it looks all that bad?
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 03:58 PM New set up.Its made from 1x3 1/4 wall box,and the support is 3/8 inch thick plate.Im feeling pretty good about this one!I think its up to the task with out a doubt;)
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 04:00 PM From the front. It looks real good.....only under compression i may get a little close to the oil pan:eek: Not to wory nothing the B.F.H. cant handle!
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 04:01 PM Geometry is dead on;)
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 04:03 PM Dont wory the ram will rotate up the hose fitting wont hit the tie rod.Tomarrow i burn it on:D ............Time to fire up the BBQ ill be back:D
4x4man 09-14-2002, 05:21 PM looks good man, id stick with the new design. should be plenty beefy enough
Just a tip - either drill drain holes in the bottom near the housing, or weld a cap plate inside so that tower can't fill up with water/mud and rust from the inside out.

Good idea, but not a real issue in the central valley. ;)
Hey! who was the lolo that stole my pakalolo!
larryboy 09-14-2002, 05:41 PM looks like you have it figured out this time:) .
SMART ASS 09-14-2002, 06:03 PM Looks KILLER!
You do nice work!
What welder/settings are you using?
ROCKTACO 09-14-2002, 09:57 PM Thanks guys!
(stuffed..............Baby back ribs)
:D
Man im so glad you brought up the "drain hole" idea! I wouldent have given it second thought!
As for the welder, Ah........Well lets say its probably worth money because its so old! Its the clasic Lincon Electric red box on wheels, must weigh about 150 Lbs.:D
So far i tacked every thing with some multi-purpose rod (60/13). I ve never welded to the axle tube before, its some thick shit! Ya got to get it real hot. I think i was at 135 amps? But will have to finish it hotter.
Hopefully ill get some time tomarrow to finish things up?
MR4WD 09-14-2002, 10:09 PM Don't use 6013 to weld anything to the axle tubes. The amount of heat required to get any sort of penetration would more than likely distort the tube firstly, and make a weak spot secondly. 6013's an all position hippy rod. More suited to making hand railings or doing ornamental work. I'd use either 6011 or 6010 or (the best) 7018. 6011's a bit more finicky, but you'll be able to get consistent welds on damp, dirty and oily steel. 6010's a good ol gouging rod, so keep the heat low, but it will cool so quickly unless you're a good welder, it'll look like crap.
I'd use 7018. Simple to use, easy to strike and good penetration. It's a "structurally loaded rod" and the welds will take continual abuse over the years, with no worry of cracking. Overall, looks good though.
SCOTTS_4X 09-14-2002, 10:18 PM yeah let's use 6010 to make a structural weld......ummmmmmmmm NO! stick with the 7018, simple straight forward rob, strike and drag......nothing to it. 6010 is a little more complicated and works best with a pause/whip teqnique that takes a while to perfect without getting lots of inclusion. just my .02....

SCOTTS_4X 09-14-2002, 10:34 PM no problem, and on a side note, about 145 on that old lincoln ought to burn real nice with the 7018.

SMART ASS 09-15-2002, 01:04 AM Killer, i have an old CRAFTSMAN 190A 240V stick welder i got from my grandpa, weighs about 80lbs... I also like 6013, when you get it right the slag will peel off its self :)

I am quite sure it rains pretty much everywhere - so that tower holding water would matter there too ;)
Ans since mud is not an issue - just a couple of small holes drilled should take care of any water issues at all :)
MASTER_of_DISASTER 09-15-2002, 11:18 AM central valley as in california?
