: Motion Off Road Cages
rob92xj 08-03-2009, 07:11 AM Has anyone used Motion Off Roads weld in cage for a XJ? I'm looking at getting one since I do not have a tube bender and the cost is fair considering what you get. They are offered in EWS, DOM, and Moly.

offroadman83 08-03-2009, 07:13 AM You will find a lot of people hate motion offroad and have been ripped off numerously if you do a search. Maybe not a search here but Naxja you will-----------Kyle
rob92xj 08-03-2009, 07:15 AM I did search and got nothing, I'll search on NAXJA later.
Thanks for the reply.
russellmn 08-03-2009, 09:22 AM Otherwise find someone nearby that has a bender, get them to build your hoops, and the rest is all straight shots anyway, you can cut and notch them yourself to fit.
DirtyComanche 08-03-2009, 09:50 AM Is their cage not a repackaged cage from somebody else? That's what motion offroad is about. Fellow going by LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW is the douche behind it. If you look into his history, he pulled outright scams for a long time until he decided he needed a business name to have a professional front for his scams. The 2 that I remember was selling repackaged chinese 4.0L headers at a huge markup (claiming he made them in house), then he had a shop make him some rock rails (which he used the pictures of them being built provided by the shop as his 'build thread') and offered to 'make them' for other people at about twice what the shop had done them for.
If you search around I'm sure you'll find more douchery. He's been at it a while, I just don't remember everything he did. Most of the items he sells are repackaged parts or chinese shit.
whalebus2112 08-03-2009, 09:58 AM it took me 6 weeks to get an adjustable track bar from them:mr-t:

check these guys out, they have EWS, DOM, or moly. and way better of a price than motion offroad, plus that guy is just plain bad news
Action Fab 08-03-2009, 03:40 PM I had one and hated it. it was always right in the way. Hit my head all the time and I couldn't even use my glove box.

x2 I am going to redo my cage; s&w is too tight unless you are effin tiny. I am 5'10 and I bang my head on it constantly.
BB1980 08-04-2009, 07:17 PM too bad they dont fit cherokees...
What do you mean? It says it does. It doesn't give a picture of the Cherokee version, however. I would want to see it before I bought it.
I can't comment on the Motion kit, but it sounds like they're sketchy and may be buying their kit from S&W anyhow.
I used the S&W 10 point ERW kit in my 2 dr trail rig.
I can't see how a pre-bent cage could fit any tighter than the S&W does.
I made some custom modifications to my install but the fit issues I addressed and could see being present for others would still be present in most any internal cage, custom bent or not.
Without a bend in the dashbar there is no way you could not block either 1) the gauge cluster, 2) the glove box or 3) windshield visibility
Bent dashbars are not globally viewed as acceptable practice. as far as which of the 3 to block, they chose the 'acceptable casualty' in their deisgn.
Headroom for any 6 footer+ is going to be squeezed in an XJ when you wedge a 1.625" steel tube between your head and the headliner.
With this kit, you decide where to put the B pillar hoop, selecting whether to compromise rear door access/rear seat passenger comfort or front seat headroom for tall guys. The only other option would be to put multiple bends in the b pillar hoop which again is viewed by many as unacceptable (not to mention making it more complex to manufacture).
Changes I made:
1)I added about a stick of tube (18') to it in the form of gussets, spreaders and uniframe tie-ins
2)As for the fit, I have no dash, (but do have a headliner and trim, from the beltline up) so I can't comment on how it would fit in a fully trimmed rig.Since I don't have a dash I was able to install the A pillar legs upside down so they hug the firewall more
3)I'm 6'5" so I put the B hoop through what would be the front of the rear seat bottom and the middle of the rear door opening on a 4 door. I've also used foam rollbar padding all over and hitting my head is not a concern.
4)I would think rear seat passengers over 5'10 could hit their head on the two rear legs that form the halo behind the B-pillar to the c-pillar, but it's not an issue for me.
There was plenty of 'excess length' on the tubes that I could make these mods without having to splice tube onto the ends of the various pieces.
Overall, for what it is (a recreational cage) I give the S&W racecars kit :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2: out of a possible 5 :flipoff2: 's
And yes, it works:

BB1980 08-04-2009, 10:32 PM Thanks WTF? , I think I found me a cage kit for a starting point. Can't beat the price.
Dirt-Fab 08-05-2009, 01:00 AM WTF? How did you 360 weld the upper tubes? Drop it through the floor?
Any more close up interior pics?
rob92xj 08-05-2009, 06:34 AM I wouldn't have a problem if I still lived in NY I would just have the guys who did my drag cars do it for me.
There is a local guy but it seems as if he doesn't want to bother with it he is backed up with work anyhow.
I did find a few others in my search I also emailed S&W to see if they have any pics of one installed that they could email me back it is a great deal for the money I just want to make sure it is going to fit.

It is normal to cut a hole in the floor to 360 weld the upper hoops. I questioned the guys at the shop that build the cages in my drag cars the first time I seen them installing a cage, they also would run the tubing to tie into the sub frame connectors(my car was a 91 Mustang).

That is what I did. Its pretty much the only way to go.
Goatman 08-05-2009, 08:39 AM Good point made previously about head room. Doesn't make much sense to install a cage for safety, and then smash heads on the cage in a violent rollover. The B pillar needs to be back far enough to clear the front passengers heads or there's not a lot of point to the cage. This is one reason why it's not easy to design a good interior cage. Getting what you paid for (cheap) might not be the best idea for an interior cage. This is one reason that more and more custom cages are going to exterior roof hoops and interior down bars.
BB1980 08-05-2009, 05:01 PM The S & W still sounds like a winner for a beginner that can be added to:

If I had to go back and do it again, i would cut the floor.
I chose the path of greatest resistance (), and attempted to weld it as installed with flux core (smaller nozzle and besides its the only machine I've got) and a welding blanket. What it produced was ugly, out-of-position welds and burned spots in the headliner. There are a few spots where I'm a hair shy of fully welded (i know, gasp:shaking:).
As I mentioned in my prior post this is a recreational, HREW cage; NOT jeepspeed, nascar or NHRA spec. Would I want to barrel roll it at 55? Hell no! (and besides, My jeep won't exceed 35mph in current form)
But it's survived the pictured low speed roll completely unscathed, and gives me peace of mind on the trail. I could probably have a better cage for several hundred more, but my jeeps are about bang-for-the-buck value. Also being able to properly mount a 5 point harness is a great confidence booster too.
Here are the only other photos I have on file. And before you fawkers say it, yes it needs more triangulation and my welds are not art, but they are strong:flipoff2:.
I added the center spreader in this halo and I think the B pillar crossbar is not designed into the kit (it's been a few years and I don't remember);

Bear in mind the legs are upside down (and possible reversed?) so the A-pillar fit and dash bar may be different in a rig with an interior:
