: My build...1956 Pontiac 4x4

I wanted to something different other than just another pickup....so my dad and I decided to build this. We originaly bought this car for parts for our 2 door hard top, but it was too solid to just strip down, so it sat for 3 years till just 6 months ago when we decided to mix this car and my truck.
here's what we started with

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x267/bjharding_2007/0811081631.jpg
and
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x267/bjharding_2007/PICT0139.jpg

Drove both vehicles into the shop that mounted the body on the frame for me. the pontiac cruised 120 miles at 70 mph to the shop :)

and here is one from my phone, cab and front clip on the lift on the left, frame in front, and pontiac body in the air just waiting....friends up north may be mad, the only rust the truck had was a half dollar size hole in the driver cab corner, and a few small dents that could have been fixed real easy

and cleaned and painted frame with bumper mounts attached. Also added a 2" reciever to the front of the frame so we can run the sams club multi mount winch. Pics of body back on with bumpers to come next. she's getting closer!!

Body is all taken care of. Note the hitch under the front bumper. WE have the champion 10k hitch-mount winch for this.

Need to hook up the starter, run the wires for the key, add oil and antifreeze and she should be moving under her own power.

so this is where I am as of now. Still have some small details to take care of that i'm hoping people here can help me out with.

1: what pressure cap for the radiator should I use with the big block?
2: Do i need to route a fuel return line, or can i just cap it off at the pump?
3: is it really worth it to use the waterless coolant?

Looks good for being a Trar. I too am curious why you couldn't use a shitty old truck, instead of a nice one.

This was a shitty old truck to me....bought it for $800, and this one i knew to be mechanicaly sound. Tranny was just rebuilt, and the body went to a friend trying to restore his truck. Its duties are going to be beach cruising, towing our boat, and towing our other 1956 pontiac to car shows, and the occasional off road adventure. But no mud bogging, i got a jeep for that.

anybody have any answers to my questions?

well you know how to WRECK a GOOD car

I haven't done anything to wreck it. The amount of money and time it would have taken to get the car back to a good daily driver would have been more than the finished car would be worth. This way when i'm done i have a vehicle i can get more use out of, and if it brakes down on the road i can pop in advance or autozone for a quick fix instead of getting parts from ebay and paying out the ass. We've got a mint all original 56 2door hardtop with 29K miles on it. Trust me, this car wasn't worth the restoration, and the truck was just a plain old chevy with some rust, dents and a 305. Don't have any time to touch it for the rest of the week, gotta pick up a deuce and a half from pa, but hopefully by the end of next week we'll have it moving under its own power with some vids

I'll agree with that. At least it looks like the fab work is 10x better than that minivan on a blazer project that everyone wanted to see blow up.

Points for being different but it's not really my cup o tea.

Did you have to change the wheel base at all or did you just get lucky?

I think its kind of cool, nice to see something different. I too would like to see it on some bigger rubbers. At least post some pics of it when you've got the other car on a trailer behind it. That would be kind of cool for pulling a show car around thats the same year, make and model.

I'd drive it. It looks clean yet nastalgic. And yes I am a guy from up north who would kick your ass for that body.

Function over form prevails around here, only bonus points after you fit function first.

1: what pressure cap for the radiator should I use with the big block?

looks like an aftermarket radiator, ask the manufacturer, he may have
different specs than factory would.

2: Do i need to route a fuel return line, or can i just cap it off at the pump?

I must have missed your fuel delivery system, tbi, tpi, or staying with carb?

3: is it really worth it to use the waterless coolant?

not familiar with the term, same as premixed??

btw, don't take any crap, it's cool, and it's what you wanted.

The Pontiac frame was prolly stronger than the Chevy frame. :p

I woulda just dumped the BBC into the Pontiac and left it at that.

well, at least youre creative. While its not something i would choose to start with, it looks like you took some time to at least try and think it through a little bit.

Make it yours, screw everyone else. People make fun of anything they dont feel fits with their crowd. Try having a mud race in a crowd full of street rodders that shine their shit till it makes your eyeballs peel.

If by "waterless coolant", you mean something like Evans, it depends on whether you intend to keep that engine a long time. It looked new from the pics, so maybe you do. Evans is damned expensive but great stuff - very popular among the diesel crowd. If you go with waterless, you do not need a pressurized coolant system, so the cap poundage doesn't matter.

Did you have to change the wheel base at all or did you just get lucky?

The whole reason we went with my shortbed truck is that its wheelbase was only about 2" shorter than the cars. That's why the front wheel is only a little back in the fender wells.

Boy them hot rod guys are gonna be maddd.

Yeh, that's just one of the perks :)

Where in Pa are you truckin... I mean carin.... or trarin to? There is a decent duece for sale under 3k about ten miles from me.

Leave tomorrow for Anneville. Fort Indiantown Gap to be more specific. My dad, brother and I along with 2 friends each bought a deuce from the government, so that means a convoy of 5 back from pa to nc.

the coolant, yeh i meant evans, just couldn't remember their name. A friend of mine was pushing me towards it. I've never owned a big block before and he says they run real hot so i'd be better off spending a bit more money on the better coolant.

As for fuel, i'm just running a 4bbl carb. I haven't run the fuel lines and i don't know if i should run a return or if i can just block it off.

It's been a while. My dad was in a car wreck that put a long hold on doing any work on shit for a while. Finally was feeling good enough to go back to the garage so we got it running.
YouTube - 1956 pontiac 4x4 car starting for the very first time! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q1o64Ebiys)

As soon as the weather gets nicer it will be driven around the block and then the body work will start. Also, picked up a 14bolt and 60 that will go in whenever the 10bolt breaks.

Definitely one of the nicer trars I have seen. I guess I wouldn't plan on wheeling it too hard if you are going to leave the rear fenders where they are. As far as the return line goes, you should be able to just block it off.

yeh we blocked the return and it seems to be fine. Thanks for the compliments. This thing isn't going to be a rock crawler or a mudder, more of a beach cruiser and tow rig that can make it up the trail to the campsite.

Just reading the title I thought "oh here we go, another moron trying to come in here with their trar!" But the fab looks good, work with what you got I guess. Not my thing, but for what it is, it is the best one I think I have seen.

I like it! What else would you do with the 4 door Pontiac? Hot Rodders don't want 4 doors, that's been proven for years.

Great job with the mounts as well. I always wondered why people didn't fab mounts that matched the OEM body mounts. Especially those conversions that just attach one frame to the other.

You can add a zero rate leaf to the front to move the axle forward an inch, and do the same in the back to level it out.

Nice work, keep updates coming.

drove it this past weekend for the first time! video will come soon, but it was nice. Rode alot better than when it was a truck or car, and had a nice pop off the line. Timing was a little off so and it still needs some tinkering here and there, mounting the temp and oil pressure gauges, and then after the mechanical kinks are worked out, maybe a smokey burnout :)
